How to upgrade to ICS from GB

I'm having a lot of issues with my phone currently so I'm in the mood to do a complete overhaul.

I have not yet upgraded to ICS as i don't know how. I'm unable to gain a response from the upgrade software option in about. Kies tells me that my phone is not compatible to update software. I'm kind of at a loose end.

Who can please advise me as to what I need to do?

I will post this here too, as it might help someone else who looks in this thread.

This is what I did when upgrading from GB to ICS.

1. I made sure all my TB backups were user apps only and no system files. then I moved all my backups off my phone and put them on my computer, that way I could move them back with the data later.

2. I made a nanoid backup for obvious reasons.

3. I made a backup of all my contacts, not with google but off of my phone. I also moved this off the phone and onto my computer.

4. I moved any info I wanted to keep off my internal SD and external SD. I then proceeded to format my internal SD and external SD card so they were both like new for the upgrade.

5. I did a factory reset to remove root and wipe out and "junk" file I had accumulated.

6. I downloaded my stock ICS firmware through CheckFus and flashed that file through Odin.

After all that was done, I proceeded to reroot with the help of ironass dummies guide. Then it was just a simple, yet time consuming, task of moving all my data back onto my phone. Did I probably use a bit of overkill......yes. But I didn't experience the issues that many did while upgrading to ICS.

This is what "I" did for the upgrade. But please make sure you know what "you" are doing so you don't run into issues.

I did it the easy way, rooted GB and downloaded mobile Odin, downloaded the official Russian 4.0.4 ICS ROM from checkfus and copied it to the phone.

Ran mobile Odin, loaded the ROM and pressed go. 3 minutes later one working and rooted ICS phone.

DO NOT perform a factory reset or restore or cache/dalvik wipe all via cwm recovery as you could totally brick your phone.

If you insist on sticking with this firmware my advice is use cwm recovery functions as little as possible, and totally avoid the operations I've just mentioned and as soon as siyah has a 100% compatible kernel for 4.0.4 flash it via Odin (to be guaranteed safe) immediately.

Either that or flash stock lpi via Odin.

You have been warned!

Oh Hawker! You're such a drama queen. :star:

xda developers are only reporting 2 instances of bricked phones, so far, on the Russian, 4.0.4 firmware, within a few hours of its release. See, here. This is because they state that this firmware has the same kernel as the ill fated, "LQ5", Android 4.0.4 release which bricked so many phones a week ago. :ahhhhh:

Besides, d123, may well have istalled the, "GotBrickbug.apk", from here and discovered that his/her phone is not prone to it. :aetsch:

In any case, so long as d123 doesn't use CWM at all, there, "should", be no problem. :argh:

Anyway, what's the worst that can happen? You fry your motherboard and have to send it away for a week or 10 days and pay roughly

Let's be clear though...the danger in doing those wipes is particular to ICS firmware. The main culprit, if I remember right, is the 4.0.4 LQ5 firmware. For those still on GB, it is still safe to do these wipes prior to going to ICS.

Now there is one thing I am unclear about. If I am on a ICS based Syiah kernel, are the dangers still there for doing the CWM wipes?
