Root Custom Rom/Rom Toolbox Questions

abneri

Newbie
Hey everyone!! I am a new member to the site, although I have followed the site for a couple of years now. I had a question about Rom Toolbox and Custom Roms that I can not find through the threads on the LG Connect. I would love to change my status bar and icons. I have rooted my phone, but have stock Metro PCS Rom. If I download Rom Toolbox Pro, can I install roms from that? Would it be safe for this phone? Also, I have seen people talk about Broken Out Rom for this phone. What is that? The screen shot that OrKo has in the screen shot thread with the blue circle battery meter is amazing and something like that is what I am looking for. I am somewhat a Noob so please be kind. I have managed to root 3 phones (2 Huawei ascend, thanks to Tokenpoke, and this LG Connect). My LG is runnning Android 2.3.6 and ZVA. Thanks for any help.:D

1. No, rom toolbox doesn't flash roms. Though clockwork mod recovery is available via rom manager.

2. The tweaks only work on deodexed (modded stock) roms

3. Brokenout is THE rom for the connect

4. The icon is from the ics theme for Brokenout.

Where do I get the ICS Theme for Brokenout? Sorry to be a pain. Trying to learn as much as possible. I'll get it eventually. Thanks for the help. Also, thanks for the work you did with the Huawei Ascend customization guide!! When I had mine, I rooted it using your guide. Never quite felt comfortable enough to put Custom Roms on it though.

Search ICS Theme for Brokenout in the connect forum, its there.
Krazeecraker did an awesome job with it.

Thanks!! I found that. Just to be straight and make sure I have this...
1. Download Rom Toolbox Pro
2.Save current Rom to SD Card (does Rom Toolbox let me do this??)
3.Download ICS Theme to phone (copy and paste into phone browser or from Tapatalk)
4.Unzip ICS Theme in phone

I feel like I'm missing something. I swear I have been googling and reading through every forum. I think I'm confusing myself.

You NEED rom manager installed to use the center recovery.....Oh and Brokenout rom for theme step by step.

Download RomManager on market.

Flash cwm recovery

Backup current rom (rom toolbox can do this too, but only after you install RomManager)

Flash the Brokenout rom and then the theme after a reboot.

DO NOT UNZIP ANYTHING.

MANUAL FLASHING IS THE SAME AS THE ASCEND.

Ok...(again, sorry to be a pain. If I get on your nerves tell me and I'll quit asking questions).

I have downloaded Rom Manager. How do I flash CWM? Is there a link in the threads I can't find? I'm sorry. I really want to try to do this, but I feel like I need a step by step manual.

The Brokenout Rom...Is that on that sticky in the all things root stock rom thread?

Thanks for all the help! I really do appreciate it and please don't feel bad if you want to tell me to screw off. I'd probably feel that way too. Thanks again for any help you can give.

Yeah within the All things root section, just search for CWM recovery (clockwork mod recovery) and also the broken out Rom. Both are there.

Good luck and enjoy your experience with rooting. I love the hell out of my phone now thanks to the efforts of the people of this community. Puts a tear to my eye really.

Or open rom manager and click "flash recovery"

The rom and themes are both in the all things root section. Give me a moment and I'll bump them up the list.

You are incorrect sir, I'm am not running broken out nor any theme for it. I had at one point used one of the ics theme that was compiled (not for b/o) but quickly removed it because it didn't like it completely and I'm not too found of prototype roms so I choose not to run broken out. I am running stock zv9 and used metamorph to flash the portal battery meter that was developed by one of the users on this site. The link is somewhere in this forum I'll look for it and bump it for the OP.

If you have ROM manager you can get cwm through that. I always unzip through cwm with no problems. Tokenpoke, I normally listen & pay heed to what you say, so I would like to know why you say not to unzip anything.

Unzipping changes the md5 sum and makes roms not flash, just use "instal zip from sd " without unzipping.

Ok. I flashed CWM from Rom Manager and am currently backing up current rom (clicked on back-up current Rom in ROM manager). Does anyone else get this nervous the first time they do this and sit here waiting for it to finish?? It is currently rebooting. Success!! From here how do I customize the ROM? I know there are a lot of things, but I don't know which is the safest and easiest to install without issue. I would at least like to have the % of battery in the status bar instead of the generic battery icon. I would like something that would save my battery as well.

There are a couple themes that can be used to change the whole look of your rom, including the battery icon.

Get a custom shortcut widget (I use widgetsoid) and make a 2g/3g switch to turn off lte when you don't need it to save battery.

This is the second time I've seen someone mention widgetsoid so I went to check it out. Do you use widgetsoid or widgetsoid2.x?

2.X

There are others and widgetsoid is a bit intimidating at first, but simple enough and makes a power control style widget with anything you can think of essentially.
If you need step by step I'll try and make a video (I use a trial app for screen videos so I only get twenty seconds but I'll try).
