Samsung kills [then revives] local search on international Galaxy S3 in 'stability' update

Why have Samsung given in to this ridiculous claim that Apple own this feature? Blackberries have had this feature for years.

And what about the unified seach/address bar in Chrome which will do a google search and bring up bookmarks?

Multi-search is a generic feature.

Samsung should have stood their ground on the International S3. UK judges have recently thrown out other Apple claims against Samsung.

There's a fix posted all over this forum, XDA and others...does it work for the international version?

Note, for those that have the Verizon version, the update has not disabled local voice search....at least for those that have actually reported in.

BTW, I'm probably going to get flamed, but I think Apple has a case and I think Samsung's product infringes on Apple's and that Samsung should just agree and pay up.

Consider your self flamed. APPLE did not invent this! They are a very innovative company that took technology that was already out there and made it work better. The improved on current technology and patented their finished product. ( yes you can patent a procedure) This is why we have such a thin line with that is actually violating a patent and what is not. Now I guess it comes to down to the patent attorneys and judges to decide whether Samsung copied the same procedure as apple. I personally think they should have stood there ground, but hey maybe they know something we don't.

I don`t understand this either, i`m pretty sure my old HTC desire HD had the same search feature (if you mean google search could find installed apps, call history, messages etc etc) is this not a standard feature with Android or am i missing something...??

p.s. my phone has the update available now but im waiting till i find out more.

I currently am listed on my patent as the Inventor. I still disagree with this. Windows phones and desktops have been doing this for ages (Windows Voice Command). Apple simply took the "local" AND "Internet" approach to the phone. Android was doing this already as well. So you could say there was prior art for this method. The problem with the patent system is that you can not easily search for prior art. People use different terms and different OS and ... to circumvent the searches. The only time we find issues with prior art is when a product is released and a company that already does this goes "Hey". You should see the number of "similar" patents out there. Oh we do it different than them! We search the LOCAL first THEN search the web. They search the web first and THEN search LOCAL! baaaaaaahhhhhhh!

Pretty certain my HTC Evo also had this feature. Won't be long before Apple tries to patent "the neurochemical process by which an idea is created" and just sues the whole world.

My S3 updated to XXLFB this morning, I'm guessing this is an earlier update to the one discussed by the OP.

Anyway, I seem to have now lost root, even though device status still says modified, how do I get it back again?

Please tell me it's straightforward, I'm an android newbie, thanks!

Yes it is XXBLFB = XX (some EU countries) B (haven't figured this out yet) L (2012) F (June) B (Revision 11).

The OP is discussing XXBLG6 (2012, July, revision 6)

Just updated UK unbranded GS3 to i9300XXLG8 firmware still got the local search working, does anyone know what other improvements if any there are on this firmware version..? Cheers.

Hi, I didn't do the previous update that removed the local search but I believe there were additional improvements..?
