Root How to get rid of the OTA notice?

Freshly first time rooted! Woo-hoo, thanks Max at HTCEvoHacks!

I got the message about not accepting any OTA updates (!), but the notice just sits there at the top and bugs me. I know I have seen somewhere how to get rid of the notice but can't find it again anywhere. BTW, I have also turned off the 'future update notices' flag as well.
 
Settings, System updates, HTC software update, uncheck option.

Can also be done with EStrongs File Explorer.

Give Root Explorer privilege and mount /system r/w for writing. Long press file name, rename to add the .bak extension.

Does this prevent having trying to update on its own if check for updates gets rechecked again somehow?
 
Used the Estrong File Explorer to change the file to .bak, restarted the phone, and immediately got a notice that a system update was available, complete with the little icon in the top. Yes, I was in the right directory, yes, it was the otacerts.zip file, yes system was mounted r/w. What else...?
 
Clear the cache?? I'm sure I recall seeing how to do that. Somewhere. I think that's where you hold the volume down button and press the power button to get to that menu, then you select "clear cache". Yeah, that's the ticket!

So that's what I did. Heck, this stuff is easy. But the menu said "Clear Storage". I'm sure that's the same thing, right? So just press the power button and watch it boot...

Then the phone wakes up and everything is gone! Totally blank. Brand new phone just like it was a few weeks ago. All my apps, customizations, email, messages - all gone! You mean that's NOT how you clear the cache???

BUT - clever me - I DID read about how the first thing you do after getting root is install Titanium Backup and back everything up. So all I had to do was get to the Google Play Store, install TB, it found my backup, and press "GO!" Amazing!

But that is also where I learned why you buy the license. When it says it has 285 apps to restore you really don't want to have to tell it "ok" for each one. So bought the 'key' and let'r rip.

When it was done everything was restored! I use Gmail and Contacts and Google Voice so all my mail, contacts, and text messages are all in the cloud.

So I simple mistake of thinking I knew what I was doing taught me a lesson in attention to detail and the value of always having a fallback position.

So after all that drama - how do you clear the cache again??? :)
 
Well at least now you now how to recover from disaster! You also know why to do regular nandroid backups!

Clearing caches should be in the same recovery menu you were in. However, what you did was a factory reset.

What recovery are you on? It sounds like you aren't on TWRP. Anyways... there should be something under the wipe menu called cache and dalvik cache. You may have to do some poking around. If your not on TWRP I'd suggest getting on it,
 
Reading and more reading... After MUCH reading I found that nandroid backups are not a app I can install, or a command to run, or an option in my stock recovery. Nandroid backups are a function of a custom recovery like TWRP, which also gives you options like clearing the cache. [It's just amazing how far you have to go to learn such simple things like that!]

I actually got this from AndroidCentral.com in their "Android A to Z" dictionary. I need to spend more time over there - you guys are so advanced here it is hard to understand two sentences together.

So back to my original post about getting rid of the OTA notice at the top, I made the change to the otacerts.zip file renaming it to .bak but after several reboots now it is still there. Titanium Backup has an option to clear the Dalvik cache but that doesn't fix it.

So to clear my cache I really need to take the next step in this Incredible Adventure and get a custom recovery such as Clockwork mod or the Team Win Recovery Project, TWRP.

And learn how to do nandroid backups...

Sorry to bore you guys with my basic questions but every so often you guys should spell out your acronyms and explain the terms so noobies doing diligent searches can find useful information or references.
 
If you have the stock recovery you can clear the cache from there.

When you boot to hboot (volume down and power) use the volume button and highlight "recovery" press power.
Wait a sec and you'll see a red triangle and exclamation.
Hold both volume down and up and press and hold power.
A new menu will appear.
Usr the volume button to highlight "clear cache" press power.

That will clear youyr cache from the stock recovery.

We can help you get a custom recovery as well, its super easy.

First question is: did you unlock your bootloader, or just use the zedomax one click root?

I always forget the stock recovery actually has some functionality for us
 
Excellent! Now I learned how to get to recovery and pretty much what that means! Hboot is the initial step and you get to "recovery" from there. Cool! See that should be a noobie thread somewhere...

BUT - Back to the original purpose of this thread, I previously renamed the OTA file to .bak and now I have (finally) cleared the cache and as soon as it rebooted I got a message at the top, "A system update is available" and now that little icon is back. Any other advice about that??

I have only rooted using the one-click process from Max at HTCEvoHacks.com. I wouldn't mind going further like maybe an alternate recovery with some handholding.
 
Make sure that you don't have a file named /sdcard/update.zip hanging around.

Others have found that they otacert file reverts back to its original name and they've had to rename and reboot in that case.

My bad - as soon as renaming the file - reboot.
 
The file is still named as .bak - /system/etc/security/otacert.zip.bak. There is no update.zip on /sdcard. Cache cleared thru recovery and rebooted. Sooooooo....
