In your opinion. They obviously felt differently and it's their network.

And again, you don't pay extra for using Skype via 3G. So that throws the money argument out the window...
Of course they feel differently... but there is no getting around the fact that from a customer perspective, being able to make skype calls over wifi is better than not being able to make calls over wifi. Less capability is almost always worse than more capability, no?

Since VZW's network type is unique to the US, our phones are useless anywhere else it the world. Skype over wifi was a potential workaround when traveling out of the country (although not an ideal solution, it would be something). Calling over wifi is a significant feature to many people, even if it is not to others. It seems like people are defending VZW's decision which is fine I guess, but we have to agree that the removal of this feature has to be linked to VZW's bottom line (i.e. not quality of call issues over wifi).

I saw that too, not as encouraging as the "Stay right here, info coming very soon" or whatever it was yesterday.

And wtf are they thinking? The guys just said "I have no interest in the stupid devour give me a real phone" why would they go check it out?

They need to hire someone new to do their Tweeting.

I agree why respond all it is going to do is piss people off. I mean just let it go if you don't have any info lol.

NKT, the 5GB cap is ONLY when you tether? So, when you're just using your browser on your phone and downloading stuff, it's unlimited? I've always needed clarification on this.

Yes. 5GB has only been for tethering. Thats why there is no usage count for data through just your phone.

they call it unlimited but there actually is a cap its just pretty high

Okay, I haven't been posting much lately but as the regulars might remember I've been waiting for this phone since late October. My NE2 was up that long ago. I never realized until earlier this week that Sprint roams on Verizon towers for no charge. Why SHOULDN'T I go from VZW to Sprint? Their plans seem to be cheaper per month by a goodly amount. Is it just that their phones aren't as heavily subsidized? Sprint has 4G coverage in my area too (of course that won't due me any good until Summer it sounds like).

Okay, okay, I know bumping yourself is lame, but I'm serious. Why shouldn't I go to Sprint and save $$? Would I save? I don't want to wait for the EVO but why shouldn't I go to whichever offers the next great 3G phone. I want snapdragon and sense UI but bare Android 2.1 isn't so bad....

Thanks and yes I agree, just the lack of that seems to neuter the usefulness. Maybe I am just too jaded as others here after having been with Verizon for so long and having lived through their phase of disabling the most useful features of phones.

Again, thanks for all the info you provide, it is much appreciated. We now return you to the regularly scheduled programming of "Box Talk." ;)

I remember when I got my razr in the mail and turned it on for the first time. it had a television app on it with one hour of free viewing. needless to say, the second time i turned it on i saw a message "recalling <app name>" and it was gone forever.

the (as of yet) unfulfilled fantasy of an un-nerfed Verizon phone is one of the reasons i'm excited for this phone...

Correct!

That is why people have been able to get away with not buying the tether plan and racking up 10-15 gigs of bandwidth use each month. Not that I condone it, but it's being done. And I'm not saying that if you constantly are hitting those high numbers that VZW won't start paying attention to you. There are ways to tell if someone is tethering, it's just not really talked about...

If you're on your computer at home using Skype over your high-speed connection then you have dedicated bandwith at your disposal. If you're on a public or shared Wi-Fi high-speed connection that bandwith is being parsed by others using the same service, making call clarity sketchy at best for both parties.

I have Vonage (VoIP) as my home phone service provider and I can tell you that if I'm downloading a huge file or watching streaming video on my laptop and my wife's on the phone having a conversation, the person on the other end has trouble hearing her because what I'm doing is tying up so much of our available bandwith. Well, the same applies to Skype over a shared or public Wi-Fi connection.

What about over 3G?

they call it unlimited but there actually is a cap its just pretty high

There is no cap. A cap would mean you hit 5gb and they shut you off. You have a 5gb allowance. If you go over that allowance, just like minutes, and they charge you.

But PDA data plans don't charge for data over the 5gb allowance. It's only when tethering on your plan.

I'm not going anywhere! I have no other carriers in my area, except Verizon. I figure, just because Verizon is spooning me scrap doesn't me I have to smile, like it and ask for more, please. That EVO is useless to me, as is the iphone, or any other non-Verizon phone!

And that is the demographic that Verizon is counting on.

in my experience when dealing with people who are spouting off at the mouth with a context, volume or choice of vocabulary that i don't care for i've found that ignoring them is often the most effective and least stressful way to address the problem. of course there are always exceptions to the rule, but i've finished digressing...

on an on-topic note, the tweets to the various verizon accounts are getting more numerous and venomous by the minute. one can only hope that SOMEone will take notice.

Then switch to Sprint. I am lucky enough to get decent coverage from every carrier and I go with whoever has the phone I want.

Yes. 5GB has only been for tethering. Thats why there is no usage count for data through just your phone.

What? I do not tether and see a usage count on my data plan. The 5 gig cap is for any traffic. Just like my unlimited Charter cable modem has a 100 GB cap. They will not charge you for going over it, but reserve the right to revoke your privs for abusing it... Read the agreement, it does not make any distinction between the two....

And please drop the skype crap, who cares!!

What about over 3G?
Over 3-G you can make Skype to Skype calls only. If you're a big Skype user and I'm not, that's great. You can take advantage of it. But for me it has no real value, as I don't use Skype and wouldn't be calling anyone that does.

I was in Costa Rica for two weeks over xmas with no cell coverage whatsoever. I had a business emergency that needed big time fixing immediately.

And you what allowed me to fix it? A buddy's iphone with skype over wifi.

If ATT/Apple can do it, why can't VZW/HTC?

Because Verizon's great, reliable network they keep telling us about has a secret that they don't tell us....It's much slower.

Portal is actually a really fun FPS with inventive levels and really great dark humor that is worth checking out. (small plug, I love that game)

On topic: It appears that we will get some news today regarding this phone so let's stay positive at the moment and just wait for our insiders to spill what info they have.
