Root Updating my htc evo 4G?

ok ive been away from the forums for quite some time so please bear with me. I have htc evo 4g running version 2.2 build 3.30. My phone is rooted and I never had a need to update. But now I am running across a few apps here and there that do not run with my version. I dont want to lose my root. I rely heavily on my wireless teether. How should I go about updating to a newer version? Any help is greatly appreciated
 
Flash a 2.3 or higher ROM. Most of the new ROMs are 2.3.5 or higher. Even some ICS/4.0 ROMs are available. You won't lose root but don't accept any OTAs. That is when you will lose root.
