Root Help, stuck on eclair 2.1 after root/unroot

Ok, I had 2.35 Gingerbread. Decided to finally root the phone (yesterday). Worked great. Got a ROM, installed it, didn't like it. (I backed everything up with Titanium [and on my desktop]). Somehow I bricked the phone. I unbricked it using one-click and got back to Eclair 2.1. I re-rooted with 2.1. and unrooted.
Why do you ask, I'll tell you. I want to go back to 2.35. I unrooted to use Titanium, but to restore with it, I have to uncheck a box that says use unknown sources or something like that. That box is nowhere on 2.1 - why I unrooted. So I'm trying to upgrade normally through Kies mini back to 2.35 to use Titanium to get everything back, but Kies downloads, but crashes on installation. Is there a way around this? I want to root again, otherwise I'm gonna ditch this phone when I have an upgrade (next month).
Thanks for any help.

Well, guess what. As soon as I typed in that message, I'm telling you seconds, mini worked and I now have froyo 2.2. Amazing.......it's like it knew I asked you guys for help, and got scared.

Hey, I read your post and I am starting with 2.2 trying to install a custom ROM. I can't get CWM to work after installing ROM manager. I was wondering if you came across a similar problem and have a way around this? I can only get the stock recovery mode and haven't been able to do a backup yet.
Thanks

I don't know much about flashing at all, but I'm pretty sure ROM Manager does not like Captivates.
