Root Microphone / Audio Problem

The background noise from my car often overpowers the voice recognition on my MT. For it to work in my car mount I have to turn off the air, turn off the radio, slow down, and be driving on perfect pavement. Otherwise, it can't pick up when I've stopped speaking - even if I'm literally shouting at the top of my lungs.

That's an inconvenience, but the real problem is that the microphone completely dies when it fails to pick up my voice. If I stop shouting and it keeps listening, I can hit "Cancel" before it times out. Then everything is OK and I can try again. If however it times out and says "No Speech Heard", then every subsequent attempt to use the microphone says "Audio Problem". I have to reboot to clear the issue.

At home, I can reliably reproduce this test. If I hit the microphone on my keyboard app and sit in total silence, it will time out with "No speech heard" and eveything is just fine - I can use it again. But if I put the phone in the air-stream from my air-conditioner so there is a constant level background noise, it happens just like in the car. It times out with "no speech heard" and then is broken with "Audio Problem" until next reboot.

The problem appears identical in the stock ROM and in the g60 based Starship Triumph ROM that I've tested. Has anybody found a fix for this issue?

If this is an old issue discussed somewhere else, I apologize for starting a new thread. I did some searching but only found volume bugs related playback.

Thanks!

Thanks for the bluetooth suggestion. I may just have a noisy car. I was wondering if there was any chance of a software fix so that when it doesn't detect any speech it doesn't break that function until reboot. I'm okay with it having trouble hearing me. I'm less okay with it giving up on further attempts.

One more thing you can try. If you are running CM7 you can go to

Settings < Voice input & output < Voice recognizer settings. Now check mark Personalized recognition

I would then play with the google voice search for a while so it learns your speech as you go. It should help a little.

If you are familiar with using QPST for switching PRLs and such, I believe that you can mess with some of the volumes in there as well. But for the hassle that may be involved, a good accessory may do the trick. I haven't tested this method, just something I noticed. Also, before buying anything you may want to do a good browsing through all your settings to makes sure something isn't muted or turned down.

I have the same problem. I haven't done any extensive research on it or anything but every time I have tried to use voice search while in the car I get the same audio problem with the triumph, yet my friend right next to me tries it on his Sprint Galaxy S with no issues whatsoever. Kinda annoying! I have had the problem on multiple ROM's since owning the phone so I don't believe it's a specific ROM issue. Probably hardware.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I appreciate that everyone is trying to help improve voice recognition in a noisy environment. I hope in the future somebody will discover what bug causes the voice recognition to become permanently (until reboot) disabled. That's a much bigger problem for me than the poor audio reception in the car.
