Root A little help with Hboot/bootloader, please?

Thanks for looking. Just getting familiar with menus, software, etc., before moving to rooted. Phone is Incredible 2 with Verizon. Accessed boot menu and I think i unknowingly selected an option by hitting the power button. Phone only boots back to the original Verizon image, asking for me to select location etc. I want to get back to the image that I had set up but cannot seem to figure out how to get there. I've looked for a "tutorial" on navigating the boot menu, but no joy. Can anyone help?

From New Orleans, THANKS VERY MUCH!

Unfortunately, I cannot take a screenshot.

I *think* what I did was accidentally restore the factory image/settings. The phone reverted to the look that it had when it came out of the box, though I've had it for over a year. I am still unclear on how the all of the apps and settings of my phone are "stored". i.e, what is stored on the phone's memory, as opposed what is on the SD card. I could also use some info on what the various selections in he bootloader screen do.

Can you recommend a good source of info on those things?

Thanks!

are you rooted? have you made a recent nandroid backup? if so,you can go back to hboot, then select "recovery" in the hboot menu. this will take you to clockwork(or whatever custom recovery you use) so that you can do a full wipe, and restore a recent backup.

if youve a stock phone(wich ill assume, since a factory reset in hboot worked) then your only option is to redownload all your apps and reset eveything up. unfortunately, apps and such are not stored on the phone after a factory reset(whose whole purpose is to elimate personal data)

sorry to be the bearer of this news. :(

Thanks Delivery_Guy.

I am now rooted, using Revolutionary and superuser su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip. My problem now is that my phone now seems to be "roaming", where I was connected to the Verizon network before the root. I am not seeing any options that will allow me to reconnect with the Ver. network. Can you offer any suggestions?

With regard to the apps, I assume I can re-download those. Anything I should know about that? For example, I notice all of my SD data is intact, and I see that the photo gallery still points at the files in the dcim folder. any reason to save (or delete) any of the files/folders on the SD card?

Thanks again, for any guidance you can provide.

on your roaming issue, are you still on the stock rom? it may do you some good to update PRL by dialing *228 and programming the phone(option 2,i think). if not a call to vzw may be in order,as just adding a custom recovery and superuser should have change anything else on the phone,to make it think its roaming.

now,if you are on a custom rom, thats a competely different story,it may just be a bug of the rom. it still may help to dial *228. also search the roms thread for a buglist, and search the thread itself for those having that same prollem.

if you have a PG32IMG on the sd,defiantely delete that. i cant think of any others off the top of my head that may give you trouble.

if your sd has info you dont want to lose, its defiantely a good idea to back it up now and then to the PC. better safe than sorry :)

nothing you need to know about downloading apps, other than once you have them all use "titanium backup" or "my backup pro" to back up user apps,so you wont be in this dilema again :D

you can set backup schedules,or just manually do it now and then to backup new apps and new versions. :)

Thanks Scotty. I appreciate your input. Let me tell you where I am with this, and where I've been.

I've had my phone for about a year, was connected to my gmail acct and had a number of other apps installed. After deciding to root my Inc 2, I first (accidentally) did a factory reset. Phone looked just like it came out of the box. No apps, contacts or anything. Could not call anyone. Finally figured out that it was a factory reset I had done. I downloaded the HTC drivers to my computer and then proceeded to root using Revolutionary with the auto CWM recovery downld. I also loaded (flashed?) su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip. After getting S-off and rooting, I tried to set up the phone to Make calls and connect to the mobile network. While setting up, I get a warning that I am roaming and that it could cost me a bundle to connect. That's when I read your message about calling *228. SO I did that, and my "roaming settings" were "updated." I still cannot connnect to the mobile network, and I tried calling my sister and got a recorded message saying that if i would be connected with an operator, where I could a call with a credit card, or collect. Being the curious (and careless) monkey that i am, I also selected "Simlock", expecting a selection of options. After some processing I now show the message under Simlock:

0: SD FAT32 init OK
Checking Key-card...
255:Not Key-card !!!
Process done, reboot device?

Maybe my sim card is disabled?

In answer to your questions: No custom Rom yet, but i am looking... Also, I plan on getting Titanium after this is done. Didn't see PG32IMG on my SD, at least not in the root.

I am about ready to start the rooting process all over with a format of the SD, but I am not sure about the sim...

Oy...... :(

for what its worth, the sim is not needed to use the inc 2 on a cdma network. whenever i get a hair up my *ss to use my inc2 for a few days,it doesnt have a sim in it.

i seem to remember having a similar issue when i first got my inc2,and i couldnt get a signal to call 228 to activate it. a call to vzw and some time with a knowledgeable rep resulted in some sort of setting that was funky with vzw,and it was fixed.

you may want to run a stock ruu,so the phone is competely stock(dont worry, your s-off hboot will still be there :)) and then call vzw and see what they have to say.

they will have you do a factory data reset(youll need a stock recovery for this, not revolutionarys clockwork) and jump thru some other hoops.

this is the latest ruu,if you decide to go that route: http://shipped-roms.com/download.php?category=android&model=Vivo_W&file=PG32IMG_6.01.605.05.zip

OK, I downloaded the image file, loaded it and called VZW. They did some magic and my phone is working again. I just played dumb. Not that hard for me :stupid:

I guess there's no reason to sync my accounts, if I am just going to root again. But that will be tomorrow...

Thanks again for your help!

you can go ahead and sync if you want. re-rooting is easy when your s-off.

-reinstall recovery as a PG32IMG file in hboot
-reflash superuser just as you did when you rooted before :)

i recomend amon_ra for recovery, personally. you can download it from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?2cix0761zk9fnfe
