Root Rooting after accepting OTA update

If your referring to the LTEVO, then yes, with the first hboot you could flash whatever you wanted to in recovery. With the newer hboot it appears as if its the same as the unlocked OG EVO where you can't flash splash screens or radios in recovery, and possibly like the 3d where you can't flash kernels. There are always workarounds though.

HTC doesn't know what theyre up against :p

Sooo....Like an idiot I updated my ROOTED evo 4G LTE, and got the new Hboot. So now I'm assuming I have S-ON. Is there a way to Re-ROOT my phone with S-ON? I'm not particular in having the ability to flash roms, ect... I just mainly want the root for Wi-Fi Tether & Backup.... HELP with detailed instructions!

Sure, I will get this moved over to the correct forum, but first can you tell me how you rooted the device before? Did you do the 1-click root, the Regawmod root to unlock the bootloader, or Lazypanda to get S-off? It sounds like you got S-off but I want to be sure

Next. Go to settings>power and make sure fastboot is off.

Power down the device and hold power+volume down. When you release power it should take you to h-boot. You may need to attempt this a few times. When you get to H-boot tell me your H-boot # and whether you are S-ON or S-OFF

Taking the OTA while S-OFF *should* still leave you with S-OFF, but I want to check

Ok, so you were always s-on and locked to begin with.

I assume your current Rom is not rooted after the OTA, is this correct?

I'm not sure if that root method got patched or not. You could always try to run it again. Maybe check the OP and last few pages of that thread on the xda forums to see if it works in the new ota.

Since you have hboot 1.15 you can not currently gain s-off until a new exploit is found or the current methods get updated.

Right, it's no longer ROOTED.

If try to run the process again, will my phone brick? I really want to avoid that!

Again, I'm not worried about being S-ON, as long as I can get the phone in ROOT status for Wi-Fi Tethering...that's really all I'm concerned about doing....

I believe the new hboot is still rootable with HTCdev.

I don't think Regaw mod rooter will work now. Haven't checked in a little while.

Yes, both of the above are correct. I forget we always have HTC dev to fall back on. Though with its recent hinderances I don't want to have to rely on it.

OP, if you use HTC dev it will factory reset your phone, so if you have things on there that you need and arent backed up (game progress, contacts, apps, ect) then I would wait until the 1 click method is back

EDIT: it looks like regaws tool still unlocks the bootloader, but fails to put on the custom recovery and SU, both of which are the easier parts to accomplish

Ok, since you're on a Mac -

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte-all-things-root/572162-how-get-full-root-mac.html

That will do 3 things - 1) walk you through HTVdev unlock, 2) re-run Evo4GLTERoot (I can't see why it won't work with after an HTC unlock), 3) direct you on how to install TWRP recovery (so you can flash your own updates after this).

If the Evo4GLTERoot won't work after the unlock, let me know, I'll modify it for you so that it will.

See Rxpert's warnings about the HTCdev unlock resetting your phone. If you're using Google Wallet, go in to the app, and reset Wallet first.

Hi Rxpert83, do you think you can send me that link to the appropriate thread that you sent to MercedesGuyATL. I have the same issue with doing the OTA while being rooted...DOH!! Thanks!

Same screen on bootloader

I'm a bit confused as to what you would like to do. If you want to unlock your bootloader, install a recovery, and get SU that can all be done via this automated tool here:
[ROOT] RegawMOD EVO 4G LTE Rooter | Updated 08.08.12 - xda-developers

It looks like your rooted (hence the tampered), but on the new H-boot, so I'm not sure how you got to your current state.

I got to my current state by updating using the OTA while I was rooted using the one click method Evo4GLTERoot.zip (HTC EVO 4G LTE: How to root using one-click rooting tool). I totally had a brain fart when I did this OTA.

It this the only method to get SU back and be able to tether using WiFi Tether and use Titanium Backup? So I would need to unlock the bootloader and install a recovery? There is no other method to get it rooted again without unlocking the bootloader?

Thanks.

Yes this method is the only way to get your bootloader unlocked unfortunately since you accepted the OTA. :(

You'll need to use the HTCdev method manually from the htc site or use the Regaw Rooter.

Good news the RegawMOD rooted has been updated to work with the OTA, so it's pretty painless. :)
