Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

I passed by a T-Mobile store today and checked out the HD2 just to have a taste of what the Evo will be like... BIG mistake on my part!

The screen was gorgeous, the screen was very responsive, it was thin, the Transformers trailer loaded onto it was beautiful... I could go on and on.

It's now making the wait for the Evo that much harder knowing how much I loved the look and feel of the HD2.

Yeah same here. The phone looked awesome. I'm not going to lie. I'm so glad that Sprint will have the Android version. As great as the HD2 is, Windows is kind of blah. When I seen people purchasing the phone..I was shaking my head. If they only knew a superior phone is coming out this summer. Would it have been right if I told that person to wait for the Sprint version infront of the T-mobile employees? lol

I would really hate to see this become the HD2 thread. Hopefully, we can stay focused on the EVO 4G, but it's difficult not to compare the two phones since they have the same screen and the overall look of the two devices are so close. Indeed, they're both made by the same manufacturer and both have similar specs, except the EVO 4G is Android and the HD 2 is Windows Mobile. The EVO 4G has many advantages including WiMAX, a front facing camera an 8MP camera compared to 5MP on the HD2, more ROM, HDMI port, etc. At this point I wouldn't consider the HD2, but last fall I was enamored with it. Since it debuted in Europe I followed coolsmartphone.com, because they had great reviews for the HD2 which included pictures, screen shots and videos. Check it out if you want to, then feel glad that Sprint is getting the EVO 4G instead.

I don't know if this question was answered yet but I'll ask again.... is there a white version of the phone as well? Of course I'll always choose the black.

Originally, I thought it would be available in black or white and maybe it will be, but so far I haven't seen anything about color choices.

I'm pretty interested in this phone, but what's with Sprint's coverage map? There's an awful lot of "roaming" and "no service" areas. I assume that the "roaming" is no issue if you have the 99.99 "everything" plan, but all of that "no coverage" area concerns me.

First post here. Just moved over from the Incredible thread.

I am a long time Sprint guy and you don't have to worry about coverage for phone use. Just look at the verizon map to know where you can roam.

For Data, that is where you need to make sure you are only looking at the Sprint map. Unfortunately that part sucks a little, but honestly, it only sucks if you go out of the metro areas. I have been super pleased with Sprint coverage for data and they are always awesome for performance on data. Just those few times when I go to the lake house, or leave the major highways, when road tripping.

My personal plan is to get the Evo, which will handle 100% of my phone coverage needs and 97% of my data needs, then for those rare few times I go outside the Sprint data map, I'll have a Verizon data card, like the MiFi. Then I can Wifi into the Mifi with my Evo, to continue using it on high speed data ;)

Best of both worlds. Who needs a whimpy Incredible... not me!;)

Welcome Norril. I really feel bad for the people in the Incredible forum. I still go there to read the posts, but the mood is really down right now. I can't blame them for feeling let down by Verizon and it's sad that it has lead to fighting and bickering amongst themselves. I did notice that TwoSpirits was there last night trying to cheer them up, but hey, nobody's forcing them to stay with Verizon. The EVO 4G is going to be a lot better phone anyway (if the Incredible ever does come out), so I hope more people like yourself will join us.

Have been searching to find anything on noise cancellation. Has anybody found or heard if this super phone will have a second mic for noise cancellation? Have searched and surfed and still no results. Any inside info?

Thanks Bill :)

I have to agree about how the Incredible thread deteriorated. It was pretty sad. Some really great people there too and they did some incredible work on the research.

Regarding making the switch to Evo, I have to say I am really pleased with the bigger display. It sure makes one handed texting a breeze, compared to the Droid/Eris/Nexus/Incedible, etc. The virtual key layout is as wide on the Evo as a physical BB keyboard. I had Droid and it was really a bummer to type on. I had to kep sliding out the keyboard and that was just as un-fun.

The only thing I need now is an early summer release of Evo, so I can take it on vacation.

It is not even close to a deal breaker .....but I work in a loud environment and this would be a nice plus for me. GO EVO!!!!!

I always have a BT in my ear and they make some awesome noise cancellation ear pieces now. noise cancellation on the handset is a non issue for me

That does seem pretty weird, Cary. Hope Sprint doesn't get sued over the name. It would be terrible if the phone were delayed because of a name dispute.

New member here. And I am as excited about this phone as you all are.

I am an avid tech reader daily, and I am an iphone 3gs user currently. I have to say this phone pulled me across to the android side. I started watching more video lately and I have to say the 3.5 inch screen doesnt cut it. I went to a tmobile store today and watched transformers on Hd2 and the screen size was really perfect for a portable device.

With the substantial evo upgrades, I am pumped. I travel alot and to be able to port a hd movie into a display anywhere in the world is truly priceless.

I will mention one caveat: I am worried about voice quality over sprint. I have heard data is great, so we will see.

Anyway, you guys have a real phone, as opposed to the Htc "incredible".

Ty

Thanks, Ty and welcome. I don't know what you heard about voice quality, but I've had the HTC Hero since last October and the quality is the best I've every had on a phone. It's my impression that the phone quality is what makes the difference.

Excellent, ty Bill.

I have been traumatized by iphone calls and drops in Atlanta.

I will stay tuned.

I like your arrow key placement! But I would like it just a tad bit different. I'll put the microphone key in place of your enter key, the enter key in place of the numbers and symbols key, and the numbers and symbols key goes where the microphone key was. :)

Probably someone can make an app for that. ;)

CDMA has better quality than GSM

speaking of call quality - I just noticed one feature in the N1 that is missing (or hasn't been mentioned) in the EVO. There's a dual microphone active noise cancellation feature in the N1 that I automatically assumed would be carried over into the EVO but I haven't heard anything. Does someone else know or have heard anything about this feature in the EVO? Does it have its own noise cancellation feature?

*cough*

It's in everyones power to be prepared :) When I run a chat client at work to talk to my gal on my Hero, it will suck battery life. But that doesn't worry me, know why? Because I'm super anal about being prepared for every situation that might inconvenience me.

To illustrate, this is my geek "man-purse" that easily fits into any inside jacket pocket. My hand and a blu-ray are next to it for size comparison:

Contents of said man-purse are things that I get really annoyed about when I don't have them right when I want them:

Top row: (for sake of charging a low battery) AC adapter, 4" USB cord, Jawbone2 bluetooth, alcohol toilette to clean a dirty screen, 2gig memory stick.
Bottom row: Small pen, pill container containing aleve/zyrtec/sudafed, carmex, moisturizer (im afflicted with dry skin which is amazing since I live in houston and its built on a swamp next to a gulf), Skullcandy headphones, and 35 cents to make an emergency call.

I could easily slide in a spare battery there if I wanted but I know that as long as I'm near a power outlet, my phone will have life :)

Wow Cabbie, and people say I'm anal

I agree and WILL be prepared if I have to carry a batt. pack on my belt.

I was just pointing out what seems to be the weak area of the EVO. Many who use smartphones will write this off as part of owning them but no other smartphone has been offered with this much batt. demand.

I brought this up earlier, post 700 and 791 I've been searching everywhere and can find no info. I work in a loud environment and also carry a radio and another phone so I was hoping it had the second mic as an ear bud isn't an option. If it doesn't it won't be a big deal but I would like to see it included.

If you find anything please post!! I will do the same.

Have you seen the Samsung Galaxy S? If Sprint put a dedicated gpu chip in and bumped the screen up to at least an OLED, this phone wold be light years away from anybody touching the EVO! put some more on board storage and double the ram.......Sprint would bring in the masses especially with their super plans.

I believe the secret weapon that Sprint has is probably an android OS upgrade. 2.2 or 3.0, whatever is next in line. Everybody knows that is is already in the making, and should be done by the end of the 1H of this year.

what? no "protection"???

Ever since I started following phone news, I have noticed it's the iPhone that has dominated sales and attention given by the media. That
