Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

does anyone think that Sprint and HTC should have kept the "Supersonic" name for marketing purposes? i do.

IMO "Supersonic" looks/sounds so much better than EVO and it immediately conveys the message as to what the phone is all about and what its big advantage and feature is - SPEED.

of course, perhaps there were legal or other reasons they couldn't use it.

I think having 4G on the name is a good move (beats iPhone to the the punch) and EVO I'm sure stands for evolution which is fitting. I don't have a problem with the name but I have to say every time I see it I keep thinking about the car lol.

cary328is found this yesterday and it makes you wonder if the name EVO 4G will stick. My concern is that a conflict like this could delay the phone's release date.

My company released technology with a name that both Polycom and HP are also using. No biggie, when the name is describing something completely different.

Mitsubishi has an Evo. Car, tennis and phone can all have same name and get along :)

Now if Samsung came out with an Evo phone, then Sprint could stop it, because it is directly competitive.

Welcome recondite43 and thank you for pasting the video. It's nice to know that we haven't learned everything there is to know about the EVO yet, so that will give us something else to look forward to just prior to launch.

Somebody in one of the other threads (I forget who) suggested there would be a huge campaign coming that will outdo the Droid Does commercials. That sounds good to me. Go EVO 4G!!

Cool! Will the EVO have Voice to Text?

Yes it will, I believe that started with android 2.0 on the droid. I tried that feature out in the Verizon store with a lot of noise around me and it impressively got every single word right, and if you laugh it writes LOL. I plan on using the function a lot since there's no hard keyboard and I can never hit the right letters on the screen.

at the end of the above video clip, sprint mentioned a few secrets that will be disclosed close to launch. that is more interesting. anyone want to take a guess what those secrets are?

the big unknown now is the price, device and plan. it will be a big good news if they unveil a new industry low price. Apple supprised the world with their new ipad low price. Sprint can do the same.

Ok this is super long, but read if youre interested, and give feedback if you want! I know some of you, (maybe more than it seems) are probably in a close, or maybe even same situation as me, so to give feedback and throw ideas out to one another definitely wouldnt hurt for our decision making in our cell phone futures!

So I was originally a Nexus One Freak and was obsessing about it more and more as each day went on, hoping it would come out for verizon sometime this month (as the rumors were saying march 23), however once I saw those videos on youtube about this marvelous EVO, ... I really don't know what to want anymore! I am currently on T-Mobile now, contract is up on April 14th, (like 3 weeks pretty much) and my plan was to terminate service with t-mobile and hop onto verizon (cuz their coverage is better where I am) and get a lovely Nexus One with them through google. But, if the Nexus One still aint out on verizon by april 14th, I was then just gonna renew my contract and get a Nexus One and stay on T-mobile with 3G (i get good T-Mobile service where I am too. Has never let me down before). OR... I can now just stay on T-Mobile till this bad boy EVO comes out, and then hop carries and join the sprint bandwagon, and get a "everything data" plan with me and three of my phone buddies, so that way divided cost for all of us is $42.50 for unlimited everything basically (which is one HELL OF A DEAL I.M.O.) but the only thing I am not sure of about that option is sprints service for me. I've never used a phone with sprint service, and I don't know how great it is in my area. Plus I travel on the road a lot with my band, and when im out in the middle of no where, I wanna be able to depend on my carrier to provide me with communication to the world. In the past so far I've had T-Mobile and traveled on the road, Its been generally pretty good. I don't have 3G, im just on their edge service. But when I travel with my band, my bass player has verizon and where I have 1 or 2 bars with T-Mo Edge, he has 5 bars on verizon 3G. I just wanna make sure If I make this jump and sign my mobile life away for 2 years to sprint, if they can provide the same if not better service and coverage i have now on their 3G with a htc evo. I have asked some people who I know personally who live by who have sprint if they like it, and what their reception is like, and so far 2 people have said they loved it and had no problems with them at all, and one person said it wasnt too great for him and had lots of dropped calls, and sketchy reception here and there throughout town, which is something I (nor anyone for the subject matter) wants in a cell phone. I love the Nexus One, and I've wanted it for a long time, I love how unlocked and free it is, and its slim sleek design. But this phone calls my attention quite a lot too... the 4.3" screen, kickstand, 8mp camera, front 1.3 camera.. droid 2.1 now too... i just dont know. Another thing for me is the htc senseUI. I fiddled around with it on the "Droid Eris" phone for Verizon, and I didnt really like it to say the least. It made the phone seem very laggy, and slow to response of the navigation through the device. Hopefully it won't be this way on the EVO, and being that it is htc's baby, and not google's, will the future android updates come quick and sufficient? Or will they be weeks behind? For example the moto droid and htc hero; droid 2.1 has been out for sometime now but how long did it take for the moto droid to get it since the update was released? (if it even did yet, I dont own one, so I am not sure, I just heard it took awhile) and i also heard for the htc hero its not running 2.1, but again i don't own one nor am exposed to one on a daily basis, so do correct me if im wrong about those).

Well, I think my rambling has come to an end; shall it be Nexus One on T-Mobile, or Verizon, or shall it be the htc Evo on sprint? All 3G networks for each (i guess 4G for sprint lolz.. [depending if it will be available in N.M.])... so what do you guys think!!! lemme know

Much thanks in advance for your future replies! :p

That does seem pretty weird, Cary. Hope Sprint doesn't get sued over the name. It would be terrible if the phone were delayed because of a name dispute.
Thats okay, they can always revert back to Supersonic. :D

As for the secrets it has planned around launch time, like I said in few previous posts, they are holding out on something and something big. I do not think its plan wise. Its more likely hardware wise. Although the current phone has the capability for GSM and no SIM card in the photos we have seen, that does not mean that it won't appear before launch date. Only when the documents appear at FCC will we know what the secret stuff may be.

@level27:
First off, Sprint's call coverage = Verizon's. I understand that data coverage is different, but you'll have to check that out for yourself. It's been fantastic for me and I've been with Sprint for almost 4 years.

Here's my suggestion: Go with Sprint. They will be getting the Nexus One soon, and even if they weren't the Evo is definitely worth the wait. What I considered doing for a while was getting the Nexus and selling it near the launch of the Evo--it seems to be holding its resale price very well so far.

Either way, you'll save a gagillion dollars going with Sprint over Verizon. I have 4 other people on my plan with me, and after my 20% discount I pay THIRTY DOLLARS a month for basically unlimited everything (before taxes, of course). Obviously the deciding factor for you seems to be patience, so really its gonna be up to you what works best =P

Apple might have a new phone coming out, but will it have a simply everything plan attached to it? My guess would be not. Sprint is going to finally have that top of the line phone we all want AND plans that we all love. ....that's quite the combination.

PLUS at PRICES LOWER than everyone elses! It's just a win-win-win-win-win situation my friend!! :o:);):D:rolleyes:

This is my 7th year on Sprint. I think I dropped two calls in 7 years. I will say that in little podunk towns in the middle of nowhere there is not great coverage. I have been in west texas and dallas area that entire 7 years. Traveled though new mexico, texas, louisiana, oklahoma, kansas and colorado a good bit during that time and have only had 2 dropped calls. The only reason I remember the two dropped calls is because both were in the same spot and It was weird how it was just a little pocket in the middle of a neighborhood near my home.

I dont know the differenct between the data and calling coverage, but I cant say a negative thing about Sprint. They have taken care of me. I have friends with other phones and carriers and they drop calls a lot so I guess it is more just where you are. FOr me Sprint is perfect as they are cheaper too!

that is not really a big news. Current TP2 has GSM capibility, not very popular in the US.

At this point, Harware is longer a big news. it got to be price/plan or something to make it easy to attract more customers from ATT/Verizon. How about allowing ATT/Verizon to tether on Sprint's 4G?

But very popular with business users on Sprint. Especially those that go over seas.
As for allowint ATT/Verizon to tether on Sprint 4G, isn't that what is being advertised in the 4G commercials with the iPhone being connected to the Overdrive?

@level27xrock

I would recommend Sprint, mostly because of the EVO, but I'm also pleased with their customer service. I also know they use Verizon towers if you need to roam. But you don't have to think you're stuck with Sprint if you're unhappy with them and that's because they have a 30 day no questions asked return policy.

@foxnews

I don't quite understand your question, but with Sprint's mobile hotspot, up to 5 WiFi devices can attach to it, including the iPhone. Sprint also said with the EVO that up to 8 devices could attach to it. That means you could run a laptop and everyone in your car would have Internet access.

I meant that an ATT/Verizon customer can buy EVO for tethering without contract for voice. so they can use EVO as media/data/hotspot device, without phone? Or they can include voice IP?

what I am trying to guess is that if you were sprint, what should you do to attract ATT/Verizon to your network? Hardware alone can only do so much but to have a big impact, they must have something that can slightly change game rule, business model.

So I'm currently a Verizon customer that's seriously intrigued by the EVO. For those of you with Sprint, can you do 1-year contracts? I was stepping through the website and saw no mention of 1-year pricing, or any way to change from a 2-year contract. Also, I get that Verizon's network provides nearly the same coverage to Sprint users for roaming, particular for calls, but what's the data like? I read somewhere that you only get 1xRTT data roaming with Sprint on Verizon's network, and the coverage maps tend to confirm that with the posted typical speeds. Is data usage still unlimited when roaming, or do they meter? I was banking on the Incredible, but now I'm torn between that and the EVO with Sprint, mostly due to the EVO's hdmi out, 720p video, and the fact that I'd get 4G in my area (plus it's just a beautiful looking phone). Decisions!

That I know of, there are no 1 year contracts. I'm a Premier/Premium user because I've been with them over 10 years and can get a new phone every 12 months on my main line. But not on the other 3 lines I have. Those are stuck on 2 year contracts. But Like I tell every possible ATT&T/Verizon/T-Mobile user who is thinking of switching to Sprint, it all depends if you can get Sprint in your area.
Myself, I have no problem with Sprint, their plans are generally cheaper than anyone else and I have no problem with their service, customer service etc. But each person is different and your mileage may vary.

I've been with Sprint / Nextel for 7+ yrs. too. Others before that.

I have sprint, my brother has VZ and we compare voice signal all the time. I know for a fact that VZ shows coverage on their map in places they do not have ANY. VZ does have better coverage overall but your paying more for it. If you consider most people will stay within their normal travel routes and if they do take a short trip, will travel along major roads which have service. If you want to pay for the most coverage avail. buy VZ, if you want to save hundreds per year and still have good signal / service in most areas Sprint.

I travel within FL for a living and have very little prob. with sprint. Won't speak for other states, I've traveled within other states with sprint phone but wasn't watching my cell signal meter the entire trip. Phone must have worked when I needed it or I would have remembered. Sprint used to have a problem switching from one tower to the next in some areas without dropping the call but they have fixed the ones I know about within the past 6-12 mo. so they are getting better and customer service is great. Just depends what your looking for.

You can purchase antenna to help with weak areas from what I've read.

My biggest Q is this... If I know VZ is misleading people with voice coverage maps, wouldn't it be logical to assume they are doing the same with data maps as well ?

Can we truely compare networks based on their misleading sales maps ?

Also the EVO is much more than an internet connection. You can run so many apps that don't require data connection. Or you can use wi-fi in many places. Some states may not have full services on roaming towers and speeds will suffer, but that is only temp. if you buy a lessor phone, it could be slower all the time.

GPS apps are avail. that work from loaded maps vs internet like google maps.

If we lived in a perfect world, it would be covered by sat. give it time. It can only get better...

Welcome Kyler and thank you for visiting. I used to enjoy going into the Incredible forum to see what people were saying, but now it's a little depressing, because everyone seems so downtrodden over there. It's really sad.

I don't know where you stand contract wise with Verizon, but I wouldn't hesitate to go with Sprint. Baltimore was the first city to get WiMAX back in September 2008, so I have to believe you'd be in pretty good shape. One of our forum members (can't remember which one) said coverage was great in the city, but still spotty in the suburbs. That seems to be what I'm hearing from people in other cities as well, but over time, I expect things to gradually improve.

I'm pretty sure you can get a 1-year contract with Sprint, but you'll pay more compared to a 2-year contract. If the Incredible hasn't come out by the time the EVO is released, I would suggest giving Sprint a call to inquire about their plans. They also have a 30 day return policy, so I don't think you can go too far wrong.

Edit: You might also try posting in this thread: Any Sprint Employee or Insider on Forum? as a Sprint employee has been answering questions there.

The person I was think of from Baltimore was neodorian. You should check out what he said in post #98.
