Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

You don't really get a good insight into the quality of the display, based on the pictures in the link.

I know there has been quite a bit of conversation in this thread about the display type (TFT vs AMOLED)...I personally have come to despise my current phone (HTC Touch) due to its poor visibility in the sun.

I've read comments that suggest TFT does better in the sun, but my current HTC touch has TFT also....

HTC Touch specification link:

HTC Touch (Sprint) specs and Smartphone specifications - CNET Reviews

Am I missing some additional details here? Different type of TFT??

Don't get me wrong, I am very excited about the EVO 4G, but I am hoping that the display is superior to what I am dealing with currently....

Danny

Of course, there are better screens within a screen type. For instance, my iPhone does better than my nexus one in the sunlight, but the nexus one has superior blacks. My Droid outdid even the iPhone, only being tft itself. After having both, I'd prefer a top notch tft. OLED isn't quite there yet.

I really hope when Sprint releases the phone, they ship A LOT of phones, I don't want it to be like the Iphone, people making long lines, and then stores run out of EVO's.

Thats why you just gotta pull an all nighter and camp out in front of the store the night before! Think of it as black friday, least thats gonna be my approach. I wanna be the first in my city with a super smooth black beauty htc Evo :D

Definitely going to go through Best Buy and do the pre-order if they end up choosing to run that promo.

And no MIR to worry about.

Jackson from the sprint community forum just posted this link:

Android - Sprint ADP

Upcoming phones (and note the AMOLED?? for the EVO?)

Someone also posted this:
Camcorder Video

Sorry if you've already seen it. It's a full camera demo
This video and others are at the top of this thread (post #1). I'm trying to keep it up-to-date with the latest information so you won't have to hunt through all the posts to find the important stuff. Let me know if you have suggestions.

I believe it was in one of the other threads in this forum that someone mentioned the Sprint developer's page and they pointed out in the description of the camera, that instead of 8MP and 1.3MP it's listed as 8MB and 1.3MB. Easy enough to make that mistake, I guess.

Anyway, thanks for posting the link in this thread, Cary.

the same jackson also reported the price to be $199 after mail in rebate and a release of the first week in june with a possible MAY release date at Best Buy... if you want to read the thread do the following

1. go to community.sprint.com
2. in the search field type in "jackson EVO 4G Price"
3. there should be 2 evo threads with jacksons replies one of which he talks price

I just track all his postings now by going straight to the source:

My prediction:

$599 off contract
$349 for 1-year upgrade
$199 for new 2-year agreement after MIR

I really believe a big advertising splash is necessary, because I predict that the pro-iPhone media is going to do everything they can to discourage adoption of the EVO 4G and WiMAX.

Interestingly, Jackson just sent me a PM after I posted a message at community.sprint.com. He says the rumors are flying that the iPhone 4G may be coming to Sprint. I don't see that as impossible and I hope the rumor is true. I mean if Apple is going to run on the WiMAX network, it must be okay.

Jackson also asked me to share this information with you: He said he knows for a fact that the EVO won't be released until June, and he thinks "April 16th is the day when Dan Hesse will announce the release [date] of the phone with pricing and such. This is where the tricks he said he was saving up his sleeve will be announced as well". One other thing Jackson mentioned to me is the EVO might be released with Android 2.2.

If April 16th is the day we'll learn more, then I'll look forward to that day.

Thanks, Jackson.

Jackson is on this forum now. His screen name is "Supersonical" :D

In another thread, jwmacdon1231 found an article released today on Android Central. I'll list two of the questions and answers:

1. Why no AMOLED?

For a multimedia powerhouse, why implement top-of-the-line everything else and take a step backwards with TFT LCD? Did the OEM not make 4.3" AMOLEDs? Also, is 65K colors the limitation of TFT LCD, or can this be increased with a software tweak? Viewing HD content is nearly lost on a washed-out screen that cannot achieve true-life colorization. Again, for a device whose main selling point (excl. 4G) is its video capabilities, why did they go cheap on these components?

Answer
:

Oh, boy. Look, unless you're putting them side by side (or comparing to Super AMOLED, but that's another story), the sheer size of this 4.3-inch screen means you're not going to worry too much about LED vs. AMOLED. Seriously. We've been using AMOLED for a while now, and we've spent time with the Evo 4G's screen in the form of the HTC HD2, and we'd be just fine using this monster of a screen.

As for the decision to not do AMOLED? You got us. Could be a number of factors, all of which are kind of moot here. It is what it is. And what it is is a 4.3-inch screen that we'd be happy to lug around in our pockets.

2. Will the EVO will allow for Simultaneous Voice and Data Connections?

Answer:

Ahhh, the old simultaneous voice and data question. Here's the official line direct from HTC: "If you're using 4g for data, you can't use CDMA for voice. currently the only way to do simultaneous voice and data would be through a third-party VOIP solution. However, this is not do to strict hardware limitations, so it's possible this could change with future updates."

I HOPE in some way shape or form this is wrong....or Sprint has a surprise up their sleave with the 4G network and that this is available right out of the gate.

What is the purpose of 4G then, what just faster speeds?? 4G should unlock simultaneous Voice & Data for Sprint/CDMA, considering EVDO Rev. A was already mentioned(Dont have link for source) as being able to do this.

Sure 4G will have blazing speeds...but I would think a bigger selling point for it would be more speed and being able to do the one thing that AT&T as a GSM has a corner on the market for right now.

The only part that sounds good from that question is that the answer is from HTC and not Sprint.

We'll have to wait and see if it's available when the phone is first released or not. About a month after I got my Hero, Sprint released an OTA update which fixed a lot of things.

The rumor mill says we should know more on April 16th.

I haven't had it for about three months but I believe I could talk and surf the web on my PRE at slower than 4G on Sprint, I think. PRE guys a little help???
