Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

kind of off topic to current ramblings, but does anyone else see that it would be in Sprints best interest to have lied about the phone specs and actually brought a dummy phone. because really, the phone for us still has massive hype, but in general is gone for first impression hype. I believe sprint might have lowered specs so that when the actual specs come out, right before launch that "brand new" first impression hype will return even more powerful. i mean just imagine Dan Hesse walking out with a true Evo in some press release saying "April Fools! did we say tft? Well we meant to say Super amoled! did we say 1ghz? really? well, its 1.3ghz. think we really made it 512 ram? its 1gig people! and 1 gigabyte rom? nonono, only 8 gigs will do for the now network!" I would probably re-wet myself. its also possible that they reinforced tft to make it a bigger surprise when they unveil the true screen.

....price would probably be ridiculous though....you never know..

Hi Spade, thanks for visiting. If you watch the video in post# 821, at about the 7:20 mark they said there will be more surprises. Somewhere in this thread it was mentioned that we can expect more changes as well, before the final release. Some of those things you mentioned are possible, but I wouldn't get my hopes up too high. Everyone that has looked at the HD2 says the TFT screen is beautiful and it's better outdoors than the OLED screens are. I really believe the EVO will be adopted by EMT's, law enforcement and others that mostly work out in the wild and that TFT may be best for them. I don't really think TFT degrades the quality of the phone.

As far as the hype, someone eluded to Sprint promoting the EVO 4G much the same way Verizon promoted the Droid. I hope they do, because they have a great phone and they have WiMAX which is tried and true. People really need to find out about this phone.

yes, i know, just dreams, personally i would prefer tft over amoled, but super amoled over tft. a big stretch though considering samsung seems to be the only ones using it.

I agree, the screen is a little too reflective for my taste, but the size is just perfect.

I have yet to see samsung in my hands, but it looks impressive. These phones literally have become "screens".

I really hope when Sprint releases the phone, they ship A LOT of phones, I don't want it to be like the Iphone, people making long lines, and then stores run out of EVO's.

I saw this in some blog i found today. At first i thought it was photoshoped, and i went to developer.sprint.com and it didnt show up with the Name HTC EVO 4G Sizzle. But then I clicked on the link at the top for devices and sure enough it really did show up as the HTC EVO 4G Sizzle???

It also lists the specs as 8 MB and 1.3 MB cameras instead of the correct MP like it should say. So there are clearly some typos but it does list it as an AMOLED screen?

Here is the link, not sure it is anything important but thought the SIZZLE added to the name was curious?

Looks like New Mexico (where I live) won't be getting 4G... =(

And I was reading up in search engines trying to find if it will or not, but couldn't find no info. And came across a page saying Wimax is a good initial step to move things along in the phone industry, but how in the near future its population will be much lower than those of who will be on verizons and Att's new networks (called LTE) coming at the end of this year and into 2011 (network coverage wise).

Here is the article here; Sprint names new WiMax markets, soldiers on in 4G battle

Despite my hometown not getting 4G, I still will probably make the switch just because this phone is so perfect for me

Unfortunately, we don't have WiMAX where I live either and there's no word when to expect it. Just the same, I have faith that we're getting it, and the sooner the better. I can't help but think about the rumors saying Wal-Mart might put WiMAX towers on the top of their stores. That would be really good, if they did. According to the map in this link, you might be lucky to get coverage, especially if you have a Wal-Mart near by.

wonder how long it will take to get a pound of dust under the screen

I've had the Hero since last October and I don't have the problem, but I've read a lot of posts in the Nexus One forum where people were complaining about the same thing. At least you're lucky enough to not have poop under the glass like this guy has. Follow the link if you would like something to laugh about.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for joining in and for making this forum what it is.

Most of the big excitement for the week is over and it has been slow in this thread today, so I took the time to look over all of the previous posts. I have to say I'm very impressed with everyone's input. A lot of thought provoking ideas were presented and good answers given. I'm very pleased with the way the information has flowed and it has stayed on-topic very well.

Just in the past week, we've had over 20,000 views and there are over 800 posts. That's really impressive. There have been 1000's of views and a lot of posts in other threads as well in the EVO 4G forum. It's nice to be involved with such an enthusiastic group of people with a common interest.

Thanks again for your participation!

Bill

@phatning

When I was looking over the thread today, I noticed these three posts:

phatning #152 - I was a long-time AT&T customer and recently ported all my 5 lines to Sprint after reading your posts on WiMAX and SS. Surely enough, 2 weeks after I did that, Google announced AT&T 3G N1!!!

billsmed # 154 - I didn't think anyone was reading my WiMAX/Supersonic posts. Boy, are you ever going to be upset with me if I'm wrong about everything, but I hope you'll end up thinking is was the best move you ever made.

phatning #156 - Bill, I will let you know next Tuesday.

I don't think you mentioned anything to me on Tuesday, did you? :)

I don't think Bemis is a bad guy just too much stress maybe he needs to get laid and let it all out.

Now back to our regularly scheduled broadcast...

Newsflash!
The HTC Evo was seen today trying to crawl in through my back basement door, he has not been seen since. :D

We are definately better off with the TFT than the standard Amoled that HTC is using on the other phones. The Amoled is actually lower resolution that it claims, because every other pixel is actually 2 pixels wide. It doesn't give greyscale properly and images just aren't as sharp.

The Samsung Super Amoled is developed by Samsung if I remember, so that wold explain them being the only ones with it for now. I don't have details on the technology, to compare to regular Amoled.

If you browse the Incredible thread, you can find the article about Amoled resolution and color. Sorry I don't have the link handy.

The Palm Pre release was supposed to be a big deal, but the lines at my local store were only 20 people long, by the time the store opened. Everyone got a phone. I think a couple places around he country ended up running out before noon.

I showed up 1 hour before open and got second in line, if I remember.

Wow... Thanks Bill I needed a good laugh today. Not only does that guy have shitty luck (no pun intended) but he seems like a OCD nightmare anyway. Good stuff. I'd just like to also say hello to everyone, Ive been hanging out on here for the passed few months reading all the useful info all of you post daily and just decided to finally talk back. As far as the Evo goes, I think this is the most excited about a phone I have been. It is exactly what I think all of us long time Sprint customers have been waiting for... Something great and something we got first. And not to offend anyone out there and I dont like sounding like a total hater but I'm so happy there is something coming for us that is undisputedly better than the iphone.. seriously.. in your face Steve Jobs.. ass... suing HTC to really get to android cause you feel threatened. Although I will say some previews of the Espresso update or whatever its called looked pretty similar to the iphones.. Anyway, thats all from me for now. Thanks again for all the knowledge you guys drop daily.

"When I get back to the scene of the crime, to my surprise and delight, the phone is still resting on the floater like a polar bear adrift on a crumbling iceberg."
lmao

Undoubtedly, the funniest post I ever read in this forum. I even printed it so my friends could read it and it always gets a laugh.

Not upset at you at all...just at Sprint for not releasing the phone sooner! :)

Good job Bill on starting this thread.

I am just amazed that when I first stumbled onto your thread, there were only 4 "active" threads - including this one - in then "Supersonic" forum. There are now 57!!! I bet the number will double once Sprint releases the phone.

Correct. As more tidbits come out, the posts will increase, but once this phone actually is available for purchase, the number of posts will be like a tidal wave coming in.

Does anyone know if the Touch focus feature on the camera will be carried over to the video capture? That would be neat to have this function to automatically focus on another area of the video without pointing it to the center. Will help creative people who likes making home videos.

I don' think I saw this reference anywhere earlier in the thread...

...I found an interesting set of images comparing the EVO 4G, Nexus One, and iPhone:

I don't think the quality of these picture do the EVO 4G justice, but it was interesting to see the three phones side by side...

PS - this is my 1st post - I have been lurking for weeks though :)

welcome to the forum! and yes those have been posted in another thread, but its a realy good comparison. I wish somebody had a droid to compare the Evo to.

You don't really get a good insight into the quality of the display, based on the pictures in the link.

I know there has been quite a bit of conversation in this thread about the display type (TFT vs AMOLED)...I personally have come to despise my current phone (HTC Touch) due to its poor visibility in the sun.

I've read comments that suggest TFT does better in the sun, but my current HTC touch has TFT also....

HTC Touch specification link:

Am I missing some additional details here? Different type of TFT??

Don't get me wrong, I am very excited about the EVO 4G, but I am hoping that the display is superior to what I am dealing with currently....

This is way different. EVO is just way better than Palm.

Is it true that Sprint offers one-year commitment/contract as well?
