Samsung May Be Looking At Some Trouble

Nah - just the first step. I'd have been gobsmacked had it been much different. Now come the appeals. Expect this one to stretch out for quite some time yet.
 
Yeah, no one is going to be paying that amount, award will be dropped way down on appeal, and in the end, the lawyers will pocket a hefty sum that could have gone to making a better phone for both companies, and nothing else will even really matter.
 
So, what does this mean for us in the US? I love the GS3. Will there be come crippling "Over the Air update" to remove functonality? Anyone have any information on this?

Here is what cnbc.com and finnace.yahoo.com are saying: "Apple Inc. won a jury verdict of more than $1.05 billion against Samsung Electronics Co. after a finding that Samsung infringed six of seven patents for mobile devices in the first lawsuit to go before a U.S. jury in a fight for dominance of the global smartphone market."

Update: "Apple also wants to make permanent a preliminary ban it won on U.S. sales of a Samsung tablet computer and extend the ban to Samsung smartphones. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh, who presided over the San Jose trial, would decide that question herself without the jury."

Anyone remember the 1984 Apple commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhsWzJo2sN4)? To me, it seems like Apple has become the very thing it once set out to destroy, from an ideological perspective.
 
Well one of the decisions has already been reversed, total is now down to $1,049,343,540. But this will be in the courts for the next 5-10 years. As for what will come of the phone now I am not sure, but also not worried as I am on a ROM.

And I do not think the money is a big thing for samsung, they can afford it, the bad part is what will come of phones in the future, as Apple is trying to deny innovation and let its stale phones become more popular once again

Just read this and I could not be anymore pissed about the decision as well as the amount won!! $1 billion?? Seriously??

By the same logic used in the courts, anyone who creates a cell phone stole from Apple, anyone that markets and uses apps on their phone is stealing from Apple...it's sickening to know that courts will side with Apple on such a stupid matter.

I'm not much of a fan of Samsung (this phone is changing my mind slowly by slowly lol) but this is ridiculous. And what's funny is that Apple's iPad uses parts made by Samsung.

I sense jealousy...I heard reports of the Samsung Galaxy S3 outselling the iPhone. It's not Samsung's fault that they don't exclude carriers, use an operating system made by a company that bans its users from doing what they want with their phones, and have success built on hype rather than actual innovation (except with the first iPhone).
 
Won't be buying any Apple products, can't stand them.

But Samsung does get as close as they can to those patent infringements. Have been for a long time now. It's no coincidence that the best selling android phone maker has keep its product close to the iPhone in many ways. Yes Apple is frivolous, but anyone who says Samsung hasn't been copying has not been paying attention.
 
It's not the money that bothers me, but the phones they will put out in the coming years. If they have been found guilty of infringing on apples patents, that means those parts won't be allowed in upcoming phones, or at least apples' version of it. This could alter how Samsung phones both look & operate.

Not sure about the S3 it wasn't listed in the patent violations. S and SII were. It's not like they can take them back, and as far as I know you don't have to do ota updates. It really makes me mad about the rounded corner on a rectangle shaped phone, who authorized that patent!! My son has an Iphone (not my choice, I didn't even like the ipods when they came out everything having to go through itunes) and trust me I would never mistake it for a galaxy! Sorry for venting ;)
 
Key Samsung products are relative. The products that are effected are important to the Samsung line, but they are elder products. It's not going to affect the newer devices coming out and at the rate Sammy put out phones the loss will be recovered in a matter of 6-12 with small price increases across the board.

Instead of paying $199 for a new phone OC it will be $250. The S3 sold 10M phones in record time. Now the amount of phones sold in the same time will be less, but it will still happen.

This is a shot to the wallet but not a devastating blow. They will recover and come back stronger and with better features.
 
Look at this "ban" this way. All the older Samsung products will be erased from mainstream US market, and maybe some of the lower end ones (The Galaxy Ace 2, and the Galaxy Y still have the older design patterns), but the Samsungs of the SIII generation I'd think would not be affected (especially since the only thing Samsung needs to do is an update with new icons). The new Galaxy Tabs are of a whole different design (although not sure about the Tab 2 7.0), so they likely won't be affected.

Besides, its not as if the US is the only market Samsung sells to.
 
\^.^/ who's next? Google? The whole Android might become extinct once Apple hits the 1,000,000,000,000 $ mark soon.

I really hope Google steps in and knocks apple off there little pedestal. There is a reason Apple never directly attacked Microsoft that's simply because Microsoft has more money.

Yup. They will copy the next iPhone even more lol. There's this Korean college nearby and whenever I go to.Starbucks all them rich Koreans flash their iPhones. No loyalty to their own brand lol
