Root EVO 4G 2.3.5 s-on relocked getting errors

Hey all. Ive been wanting to root my phone since i bought it last year but from what I read when I bought it there wasnt a root available at that time? I found instructions here on how to root it and have followed step by step and it shows s-on relocked. Initially it showed unlocked but after the last step on htcdev it now shows relocked.

I downloaded ROM Manager which I read online I should do to flash the clockworkmod recovery? Although I just read here that I shouldn't use Rom Manager ughhh. When I opened Rom Manager it said I wasnt rooted and when I went to flash clockwork I got a message "an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands". What do I do? I'm completely lost now and don't know if I messed the phone up and it cant be rooted now? After I went through the whole process my data connection on the phone is going in and out and I normally have decent service in the house.

Appreciate any help from anyone :)

Welcome to the forums.
You can run the htcdev method again to unlock your bootloader.
You may have inadvertantly relocked it but no prob, you can unlock it again.
See this guide for help and as always, ask here also,
Lots of good people here to help:)

Appreciate that. What do you do once you unlock it? I tried yesterday and am trying again today. Yesterday it showed s-on unlocked. Today I did it again and relocked it since the instructions showed to do that. But both ways it didn't allow me to flash clockwork :shruggs

See the guide I linked to.
Basically this needs to be done.
1. Unlock bootloader with htcdev.
2. Install custom recovery
3. Flash superuser (su) and stay on stock rom or, flash custom rom with superuser already on it.
Just follow the guide, carefully, make sure you backup any important stuff.....
I/we'll be here to answer any ??'s:D

Edit: yeah , dont worry about clockwork or rom manager.....dont need em, dont use em.

No prob, just read carefully thats all,
btw, I found the easiest way to install a custom recovery was the PC36IMG method, but you can decide for yourself....there are 3 ways posted to do it...to each his own I guess.

1.download the PC36IMG for your software version above.
2.rename the file so that it is only PC36IMG. make sure that you do not add any extra .zip's to the name as windows hides extensions by default.
3.transfer the file to the root (that means not in any folder) of the sd card.

When downloading the file above, do I save the winrar file in the android folder I created or do I extract the file from the winrar into the android folder? and how do i transfer the file to the root? really appreciate the help.

No, dont unzip anything, just rename it so it is PC36IMG.zip.....
make sure no extra .zip is at the end or bootloader wont see it.
Transfer the file to the root (not in any folder) of your sd card.
I download file to computer, plug phone into computer, mount as disk drive.
Whatever appears in that drive is your sd card contents....just drop the file onto it and not in any folder.
Then unmount phone and unplug phone

got it, thanks. with the nandroid back up - if I wiped my phone yesterday and I have nothing to save then do I have to do a nandroid backup?

nice....make sure you backup wimax also and keep that backup on your computer or the cloud.....people have lost wimax (4G) and you cant get it back if you lose it..
I personally made a nandroid backup of just wimax and put it on my dropbox.
where do you find that wimax? downloading the rom now. oh schnapp this might actually work lol. thank you again. appreciate the help.

Wimax should be one of the options to backup when you made your nandroid in your new recovery screen.
btw, you can delete the PC36IMG file now, you no longer need it.
Otherwise if you go into bootloader again, it will see it again, and ask you to update blah blah blah...just delete it....lol

Edit:we posted at the same time....consider it ignored
