Anyone Considering Switching to the Razr HD/Maxx HD?

I really like my S3 a lot. Overall, it's the best phone I've had. But after having used it for nearly three months now, I can honestly say that the reception, both for calls and 4G are not as good as on my previous phones. This hasn't been a huge issue but there have been instances where it has made things a little inconvenient. For example, last Saturday my wife tried to call me from a takeout place to tell me they didn't have what I wanted but I didn't even get the call. She tried 3 times.

Also, while I like the design of the phone, I really think the build quality is lacking for such a high-end phone. It's by no means bad, but the more I look at it, the more I notice the all plastic build. Just my opinion. Finally, I think the phone might be just a tad bigger than I'd like -- especially width wise.

The way I see it, the primary advantages that the S3 has, for me anyway, are the removable battery, the additional gig of ram, and a slightly bigger screen size.

The primary advantages of the Razr HD/Maxx HD are better build quality, better radios, and a smaller size overall.

Considering both the Razr HD and Razr Maxx HD have bigger batteries than the S3, I think I'm okay with the non-removable battery. The screen size is only 0.1 inch smaller so I don't think that would make much of a difference to me either.

But I think I would notice the nearly 2mm narrower width of the Razr HD. So it really comes down to that and the better build/radios versus the extra gig of ram. Mind you, I am the primary on a family plan with 4 people who all let me use their upgrades. So I probably wouldn't have this phone for more than 8 months or so.

Of course, I have to see the phones in person, but now that these phones have been unveiled is anyone considering a possible switch when they arrive?

Spec wise, it has the same processor and either 16g or 32gig (Maxx) internal memory with expandable microsd slot. Also has a dedicated HDMI which the S3 doesn't. Bigger batteries, 2500 for Razr HD and 3300 for Razr Maxx HD. But like I said, non-removable. Both have 4.7 inch Super Amoled 720p screens versus the 4.8 inch one on the S3. Also has only 1gig of ram versus 2gigs on the S3.

Yep, if they would have released at the same time I would have stayed with Moto. Don't get me wrong tho, I really like /love the S3 but of the 2 I still prefer Moto. Also after Google buying Moto mobile, 1 can only guess that they will just get better and better.

I think there will be an international version. I know Moto is hosting an event in london soon to launch the international version of the Razr M, which will use an Intel chip instead of the S4 snapdragon found in the U.S. counterpart. I'd imagine the international version of the Razr HD and Maxx HD will probably do the same.

I agree that if both came out at the same time, I probably would have gone with Moto. As for Google, you can already sense their influence on these new phones. Comes with Chrome instead of stock android browser and a very vanilla version of blur from what I can tell.

Guarantee it will have a locked bootloader, and don't bet on Motorola unlocking it. We got lucky with the S3.

Personally I wouldnt. I do prefer the larger screen size, after having one similarly sized to the RAZR for a while. And I prefer Samsung phones to Moto phones, and the Samsung modding community I definitely prefer. Dont know the facts either but these may have locked bootloaders like several moto phones do

Well there will be a developers edition, which will have an unlocked bootloader. Honestly, these newer phones have become so powerful, that I don't really feel the need to have an unlocked bootloader anyway. I used to be a modding freak. But that was mostly to try to get a smoother UI experience and debloat. ICS allows you to disable apps. With JB's project butter, I'll probably feel even less compelled to root and stuff. As it is, on my unlocked rooted S3 all I've done is make nandroid backups just in case anything ever happens. But since I don't mod anymore, nothing ever does. I haven't restored a single backup yet. So while rooting is nice to have, it's no longer a deal breaker for me.

The Razr HD and Maxx HD screens are just 0.1 inch smaller than the S3 (4.7 inches versus 4.8 inches) and much larger than the original Droid Razr's 4.3 inch screen. It's the same size as the HTC One X.

For me I'm going back to Moto as soon as the RAZR HD MAXX is available. Extended battery? No need with a 3300 battery. Radio's? It has been said and proven Moto is the best. Build quality? Moto hands down !
While the S3 is a great phone it just doesn't serve my needs as much as a Razr. Had a Razr thin dropped it off a balcony about 10 feet high shattered my phone.

Now I know the S 3 can do anything a Razr HD can. But I just like the Razr more.

I'm considering switching. I have very poor reception and frequent dropped calls on my Verizon S3 so even though I love the phone I need to be able to make calls when needed. I will wait and see how it looks in person though and I'll have to decide whether I want to pay the full retail price which I'm sure will be a lot.

dont sound bad. wouldnt consider getting it if i have my gs3. theres really no difference. but i think gs3 will run alot better.

Noooo! My broken Razr thin runs smoother than the S3. touch wiz is still too thick and it lags sometimes just go to one of your home screens and press the home button to see the shutter. I've had apps crash and phone freeze but for the most part it runs good.

The Razr HD Maxx is gonna be a near perfect phone. Screen, build and radio quality, Smooth as close to stock Google OS, and unbeatable battery life. The only thing that might be suspect is the camera. Moto don't make good cameras or software.

I wouldnt call any phone perfect before it comes out. And i wouldnt call moto blur close to stock android either, unless it has changed recently. Your lag from the home button is probably from S Voice, which can be turned off. Its a good phone, but from someone who has used the older RAZR, I wouldnt buy the new one. Definitely wouldnt trade my s3 for one

Actually I just found out tonight on a youtube vid this is by design. You have to disable S-Voice. Because when you press home, it is waiting for the 2nd home press to start s-voice.

So just fire up Svoice, go to settings, and uncheck launch s-voice by double pressing home. now when you press the home button it wont lag.

also, not sure how you can say the razr hd/maxxx have better radios when they arent out yet!

notice moto is now using s-amoled, which means they buy the screens from samsung. guess thats good.

imo samsung will have the smoothest-non buggiest phones because they have by far the biggest budget. but i've not owned a moto to say for sure.

Guess the same question will be asked when HTC releases whatever the 1080p screened phone eh? lol. Ive bought many a phone in my day. To the point where my wife makes jokes about the fact when a new ones comes out we will get another like "for the kids" LOL By far I like my S3 the best out of the phones Ive had. I use to love Moto but their screens always sucked. Im in a heavy 4G area so signal is no issue with me. Ill be keeping my S3

The Blur on these new batch of Razr phones are very vanilla. Just watching some of the extended unboxing and hands ons of the Razr M (which are now all over the web) you can tell that the phone, messaging and email apps are very close to stock. The launcher only adds a few things such as swipe left for quick settings (which I actually like) and a favorites tab on the app drawer. These are not the obtrusive and bloated skins of old. Google owns Moto now and their influence is evident in the software.

That's my question as well. For my use, I don't think it'll make much of a difference. ICS runs fine on my old Rezound, which has an inferior chipset and JB runs great on my Xoom. Both of those have 1GB of ram.

For most, that will probably be the case. For folks like me, it brings other things to the table like a superior build, smaller form factor and what will likely be better radios. No phone I've owned has had better radios than my original DX -- a phone that's more than two years old. Why Samsung can't even match the quality of those old radios is truly something that stumps me.
