Root New to ROMs but want to upgrade my admire

nicstocks

Newbie
I've rooted the phone but that's as far as I've gotten. I want to install a rom and or tweak this but I have no idea where to start or what I need to do. Do I need anything installed on my phone before I attempt to install a new ROM?

Well before you can even install a rom you need clockwork mod recovery installed. The instructions are here : http://androidforums.com/admire-all-things-root/488848-odin-clockworkmod-recovery-not-compatible-rom-manager-yet.html

Now that let's you install stock based roms. A lot of roms though are based off of a custom kernel made by a dev called requisite0 that lets you overclock your phone to 900mhz (the admire is naturally at 800mhz). And you can get that from here : Dev-Host - CM72RC1-Kernel.zip - The Ultimate Free File Hosting / File Sharing Service

Just remember to never use rom manager unless you want to kill your phone. Also

Ok I followed the steps to install CWM and my phone rebooted so I assume thats it right? On to the next step! Thanks by the way

Yeah that's it. And like jonny said make a backup. Always good to have one just incase you mess something up

Ok but how to I do a backup and stuff? Is there any step by step for complete newbs like how to get into recovery and flash stuff and all that?

to go into recovery you turn the phone off and press these 3 button and hold them down. the volume down + power + the back button. youll know you did it right when you see blue lettering saying android. use the volume buttons to go up and down, the home button to press ok and the back well to go back. move down to backup and restore and select backup. congrats you just made a backup, wait till it finishes. now when its all done you can trasnfer it from the sd card to your computer for safe keeping. it will be in the clockworkmod/backup folder. it will be tittle by the date and time it was made.

as for the instructions most roms out there have instructions on how to flash it but its pretty much putting the zip file in the sd card and the going into recovery and selecting install from zip and locate the zip file. usually you do have to wipe data or factory restore but again most roms out there tell you that like Monster 5.3, while others actually do that for you when you are flashing the rom such as Open Android

Great, thank you!

Well somehow I think I soft bricked my phone, can't restore for some reason and the kernal that I tried to install said it was installed but when I reboot it just goes right to "android" and that's it.

Bought the Motion so whatever but i'd like to get all my contacts and stuff onto this phone

What recovey are you using 5.0.2.7 or 5.0.2.8? What are trying to restore?
5.0.2.7= stock and stock base roms
5.0.2.8= cm7 and stock++ base roms

5.0.2.8 i'm trying to get back to factory settings, i did a backup and it's on my sd card but i get an error when loading it. I read up on it and I can't load a new ROM because I don't have a sd card reader to load a ROM from my pc

Flash 5.0.2.7 with odin, like you did yesterday, then try to restore your stock backup.
As far as getting a rom on yer sd card, plug the phone into the computer and turn on usb file transfer on the phone.

the cwm version you made your backup has to be use when you try to restore the backup. and dont worry a soft brick isnt a big worry. they can be completely restored. like jonny wad said odin cwm and then restore the the backup. this cwm is 5.0.2.7 the one i assume you have is 5.0.2.8. they were explained already above so i wont do that again.

yeah i had 5.0.2.7 my mistake and I got it back to normal, gotta wait for my batt. to charge then i'm going to attempt a kernel install then a new ROM
