Will Nexus price drop when new model is available

Hello All,

I read that Google will be offering a new Nexus (though I don't remember when it was expected).

Is this true? If so, will the current Nexus drop below $350?

I am looking for my first Android phone, and leaning hard towards the Google Nexus, largely because of the price point combined with current updates always coming from Google.

Thanks for any advice.
 
i believe the prices will drop, but that $600 price tag is a little much for a phone if you ask me. i may just ignore the whole customization era and go for the moto brand and just be done
 
I am almost sure it will drop....it is built into the designed (planned obsolescence).

VoidedSaint; I am with you...I am considering the Razr Maxx HD...
And reality is...phones are now so advance that there is no need to upgrade so often...unless there is something revolutionary that will benefit me directly.

What can you do with the S3 or the Maxx HD or maybe even the new Nexus that you can not do with the current Nexus?

Now, having said that, I am guilty of the above. This year, I've had the Rezound, Spectrum, Razr Maxx, and now the Nexus. Truth is...the Nexus has the best Android experience by far (in my opinion).

I can get it for $350. If I could get it for .01 I wouldn't want it any cheaper, but that does not matter unless you can tell me how to get one (unlocked) for that same price.
 
My understanding is that they are all (Galaxy Nexus) unlocked. If not you can easily do it yourself.
Or do you mean off contract?

Hold 4g signal for more than a few hrs before it drops out. Plus better battery life on 4g with the newer chipsets. Those things alone would tempt me. Plus the camera on the gnex is crap, and the gnex can't play 720p or 1080p videos unless it is youtube. My pantech marauder can play 720p at least, and it has the same chipset the gs3 and razr mazz hd are getting.

The nexus really is an amazing android experience, but if they can't give it decent signal reception stability and a decent camera, it could still be a let down. Aside from that though the nexus is one of the best devices I've ever had, and I'm really hoping samsung can release a new one with these bugs ironed out. Take a page from apple's playbook with a really good camera, and slap in a qualcomm s4 SoC and I'd consider it a worthy upgrade.

So the camera is really that bad? I don't think the camera would be a deal-breaker for me, but good information to know.

My 2 main choices are the Google Nexus for $350 and I pop my prepaid T-Mobile SIM in and away I go, or go to Ting.com and fork out $500 for the Galaxy S3. With Ting I could get away with either the 100 or 500 meg data plan, so would still be reasonable, though with my low usage, it would still cost me a bit more than what I spend with my T-Mobile prepaid.

Thanks for all the input and advice here, I do appreciate hearing from people with experience with the phone.

Every pic I take with it either uses flash even in daylight and makes things look terrible, or I turn it off and get a blurry image. In this day and age they should put image stabilization in for starters, apple managed to do that, and they should also do the whole backside illumination thing to improve brightness at lower iso's so you can get a faster shutter speed to help fight blur in daytime and even in nighttime.

Also if ting costs you more for the phone and for the plan, why not stick with tmobile?

Good point. The Ting would have data if I wanted it, but I am not sure I want to start down that road :p, but mainly because it is one of the few ways I know of where I can get the Galaxy S3 without getting into a contract, with data plan etc., and I don't want to do that.

Am I NOT hung up on needing the S3 or the Google phone, it is only that I can get either of them without a contract. The Google is the better deal for me, as I already have the SIM card for it, but do not want buyers remorse for not getting a good all-around phone.

Can you make other suggestions/recommendations for phones I can get without contract, or unlocked?

I will always get a Nexus device. And the main reason for that is Google Support updates. yes they are amazing on our current nexus and all past nexi (lol?). When the new nexus is released I will most likely wait 6 months before I get it so the price will drop reasonably

I have to respectfully disagree, my friend. I do video production for a living, and the main camera I shoot on is a Panasonic GH2 (interchangeable lens dslr). It records in 1080p24 in AVCHD format, at about 24 mbps bitrate. This format is notorious for being difficult to work with and is processor-intensive to play. You have to transcode to a different format in order to edit-- which is actually typical for most acquisition formats. But I have taken a raw video file from the camera's SD card and put it on the phone and it plays BUTTERY smooth. I bought a Tegra 2 tablet with a full size SD card slot in order to review footage in the field on a large screen. On the Tegra 2, it was unplayable. I exchanged it for a Tegra 3 tablet with a full size SD card slot, and it plays buttery like on the GNex.

Now to play AVCHD, I had to use an app called Dice Video Player. It's the only thing I've found that will play that format. Otherwise, I like MX Player for anything else. I'm wondering if it's the software that's the problem for you.

I just ordered an OTG cable, which I plan to use with a USB stick sized SD card reader-- which I'll plug the camera's SD card into and then hopefully be able to watch playback on the GNex. I still like the idea of using the tablet, but I always have my phone with me and its screen is way better than the screen on the camera, so I think I'll use it a lot more.
 
Who knows whether the price will drop. If the next Nexus is sold at the same price, and Google is still offering this version, then the price will likely drop. But it's a distinct possibility that once the Play Store starts offering the new Nexus, this model will no longer be available, and you will have to buy from Amazon. Also, Google's next strategy seems to be - before it gets to the new Nexus - to start offering Nexus devices from different manufacturers.

The question is, is a $350 phone - with the specs and software of the GN - off contract worth it to you? If so, get it, and stop worrying about buyers' remorse.
