Root Warning now that we have Custom Recovery!!!

Since we now have CWM custom recovery I felt it was time to post this WARNING!!!

If you have installed GP's CWM recovery DO NOT factory reset your phone from the privacy menu under settings... All resets need to be done from recovery via the Format Data/Factory Reset Option.

If you do a reset from Privacy menu you MAY end up bricking your phone because custom recoveries generally don't respond good to the factory reset command from the stock rom.

Also there have been some that have installed the CWM recovery on the ZV4 firmware. If you ever decide you want to install the ZV5 update you will more than likley going to need to switch back to stock recovery. The update command from the stock rom may not be liked by the custom recovery Either.

Now these are from previous experience I have with phones in the past and May or May Not be applicable to the Elite but since it is CWM it is more than likley the case. I felt a warning was justified. Unless someone wants to try just to see what happens I would avoid the Factory Reset and Update options in the Stock Settings Menu

you would be surprised lol.. user fudd: hey let me try this reset button I'm not supposed to click!! heeeey!! my phone don't work no more...wonder what happened to it?? :eek:
 
Hmm.. Is there a way of disabling the stock factory reset in settings so nobody accidentally does it?

im sure you could remove the option by tweaking the rom's coding but thats a whole nother thread entirely i suppose.
 
When I had the Optimus V alot of people did it. Yes the option can be removed by editing rom. Most all the custom rom's we had for the optimus V had the option removed.

There is no internal SD card. This phone has a 3.7GiB internal nand that is partitioned into 20 partitions. If you start counting at 0, then number 12 is the one that gets mounted as /data and number 14 gets mounted as the fake internal sd card. Number 12 is 904.0MiB and number 14 is 1.9GiB. The partitions are just a EBR off the normal MBR.

Now, assuming you really do need more that 904MiB for your /data partition, you can edit your partitions by making the 14th one smaller and giving that space to the 12th one. I say that theres no reason in the world you should have filled up those 904MiB in the first place. And I actually did the opposite. I took space away from /data and some of the other wasted space from other partitions and gave it all to that 14th partition and made my fake-internal sd card bigger.

3 ways to Factory Reset - 2 of which you can't do anymore if you have custom recovery.

1. Go to settings > Privacy > Select Factory Data Reset - This method erases all user data and apps

2. Dial ##786# > Enter MSL > Select RTN Reset - This method returns phone to out of box state. It erases all user data and apps as well as unactivates the phone thus removing your phone number. I always do this if I sell a phone

3. Boot into recovery and select Format Data / Factory Reset - This functions the same as #1

BUT if you have custom recovery don't do #1 or #2 or you may end up with an Official Optimus Elite Paperweight which may or not be able to be repaired easily.
 
Running "echo 3 > /sys/module/lge_emmc_direct_access/parameters/write_block" will cause a factory reset if you don't change it from "3" before you reboot, IIRC.
