What if you dont wipe the dalvik and cache before backing up? Wikk this cause problems with restoring?

Yes, provided the backup files do not become corrupted over time.

Note: If you do not have a microSD card inserted in your phone, then choose " - backup to internal sdcard" and the backup will be saved to /sdcard instead of /sdcard/_ExternalSD. The latter would not be possible if you do not have a microSD card inserted.

The backup is a file, kind of like a rom, it is stored until you need to flash it

Yeah.. each backup consists of:
boot.img
cache.ext4.tar
data.ext4.tar
nandroid.md5
recovery.img
system.ext4.tar

If you ever want to pull individual files/apps out of a backup, you can use the Nandroid Browser app (available in the Play Store).

Backup:
Reboot into recovery
Clear cache
Advanced -> Wipe dalvik
Go Back
Backup and Restore

Restore:
reboot into recovery
clear cache

select your backup that you want to restore

reboot

Been waiting for something like this to add to the guide/FAQ. Done so accordingly, thanks MacFett!

Just an fyi, those steps are from memory and could have something missing, so please use them wisely and if you find a mistake let me know.

I'd also like to note that backing up takes up quite a bit of space on my phone if you have multiple back ups or a smaller SD Card.
I personally keep only the last two back ups available and if you'd like to delete your older ones, they're in the _ExternalSD>clockworkmod>backup folder.

That is part of the reason to wipe cache and dalvik, it helps saves space and as ktb83 mentioned it creates a cleaner backup. I personally wipe cache and dalvik every time I go into recovery, no matter why I am in there.

Wiping the cahce and dalvik doesn't delete any data, correct?
