Help iPhone 4S to S3

OK. I'm about to return the S3...

I have a Mac running 10.8.x and there does not appear to be any way at all to do a one-time transfer of media (photos, tunes) from my iPhone to the S3 or regular sync's.

I have searched here and downloaded and run Easy Phone Sync, iSyncr, and Kies. None of these work as advertised. I called AT & T who handed me off to Samsung who said Kies is not supported in 10.8.x and were not able to offer a viable, easy to use, workaround.

EPS sorta works but sorta doesn't cut it. iSyncr won't even launch, and Kies mounts my phone intermittently and so doesn't work either.

What I want to be able to do is:

1) Do a one-time move of all my contacts, pics, and tunes.
2) Find some application that will do what iTunes does.

Any suggestions? I love the phone and am very motivated to make this work but it HAS to be as easy to sync the Android/Mac as it is to do it with the iP/iTunes. I do not want to get into the habit of nursing a finicky device/software package to get it to what I want.

I truly believe ICS/JB are vastly superior to the new iOS but this is a total deal-breaker for me. I don't have time to play with some half-ass syncing issue nor am I going to go buy a POS computer (i.e., anything the Microsoft touches) to support my shiny new phone...

well the easiest way for contacts is to export them from iphone in iTunes to a cvs file than import that cvs file to your google account, once its in your google account it will sync to your galaxy

Kies works for me on 10.8.2

i dont have itunes purchases to test but kies has a import itunes libary option

I would have to think Kies would work as well. Its browser based. I wouldn't think that Safari is *that* bad.

I've put my my s3 on ebay (ends today) for the same reason. As a mac user is no way to sync music and photos easily. You can't even connect the phone to the Mac as a camera.

Samsung hope to fix Kies in a future update but will not say when. I thought Samsung were trying to encourage people like me (long term iphone user) to switch. Well I did but I can't use it easily.

It's a real shame because I think the phone beats the iPhone in most areas.

Well the thing is, syncing isn't really a big thing outside the iphone ecosystem. And I dont expect Kies will every play nicely with Macs. Android is really based on the cloud, if you want to backup photos and contacts and just about anything else, it can be done on the cloud. Music is going to the cloud from google music and amazon music, where you can download straight to the device or not even have to download the music. Now if you want to get music you already have on the phone, you just have to plug in a usb cable and drag and drop the folders.

There will probably never be anything like itunes for android, and for alot of people thats actually a positive

I don't want iTunes for android. Just a way of copying files to and from my phone / Mac. Samsung hasn't updated Kies to work with the latest Mac OS that was released in July. Without that I cannot connect the phone to my Mac to copy files across. I could use the cloud... perhaps upload gigabytes of photos and music to Dropbox. It would take days.... weeks....

I've copied all of the files I need to using my pos computer.... Music, movies, etc. My contacts are in Gmail...easy. Don't blame the phone for the BS that Apple has created.

Well, now I'm finding that the gallery is buggy as hell. I mean really, how is it that this device (or perhaps the overall operating system) is so popular? I could understand if I was trying to do something complicated but this is ridiculous.

I have a bunch of pictures on the phone that probably got put on there during my attempts to use one the programs I mentioned above. So, I go into galleries, hit menu, push select, tap on a few pics, press the menu, press delete, phone hangs. Done.

Is this a problem with Android or Samsung's implementation of ICS??

I think it's more of a problem with the crap you've done in your attempts to transfer your files... Mine works fine, haven't heard of anyone else with an issue like that.

Seriously, this is exactly what apple wanted... People get so accustomed to the prison that is the apple ecosystem that simple tasks become daunting. The things you described wanting to do, I did the first 20 minutes I had my phone and haven't thought about it since.

And you have a Mac?

This is exactly what I was expecting based on the info here: That the phone is reliable and easy to use. I select picture, and try to delete it. How, exactly, does being an Apple Drone, make that not work?

My point being, I don't know what you have done to your phone in the process of trying to do something with your mac that for those with pc's is extremely simple. I can do anything I need to with an apple device using my PC... But apparently it's a problem for many people with a non-apple device to do simple things with their mac. Thank apple.

Sync the iphone to your google account to deal with contacts, calendars etc

doubletwist for everything else.

I've just come from an iPhone 4 to an S3. Yes, there is a serious compatibility problem with OS X, but it's not a real issue for me. I only have Mac computers, but this is how I've overcome Samsung's shortcomings:

Sync photos from camera to Mac via Dropbox (you get a 50GB account with the S3). Transfer music manually onto the SD card in the phone - you've got one, right?!

As for contacts, open up Contacts on your Mac, highlight all (CMD + A), export as VCF. Now login to your Google account, go to Google contacts and import the file. Assuming you're syncing your Google account to your phone, they will all appear. Worked absolutely perfectly for me - pictures 'n' all. Alternatively, you could try "SmoothSync for Cloud Contacts" from the Play Store.

It's true that it's unacceptable for a modern day piece of software to not have a Mac version. They're too popular to ignore now - especially if Samsung is trying to snatch at the Apple market. That said, you and I heavily bought into the Apple world where everything is hidden from us and "just works". Moving out of that is always going to have its challenges, but with Google it's far from impossible.

Still, I love my S3 and haven't once looked back/regretted the move. Gave my iPhone to my girlfriend 2 days ago. It's gone.

You bought your S3 for a reason, you purposely moved away from an iPhone. But would you go back to something you wanted to avoid simply because you have to spend an extra minute putting music on your phone? I'm not saying that's wrong - simply, if the answer to that is yes then an S3 is not for you (due to your investment into Apple).

I guess the idea of using your micro sd card isn't any better than using a cable and itunes? Or have you not thought of this simple solution to your woes?

Itunes is probable the single worst bit of code ever made. Apple wants to make it so complicated for you to leave their sandbox, that you give up. Free yourself now Neo.

Why are you pushing menu again, after you selected the pictures you want to delete? After you select the pics, there is a big trashcan icon in the upper right corner to push. Unless of course, you are running some other phone, something other than stock rom or aren't actually in the stock gallery?

I appreciate your comments. It's taken few a hundred minutes at this point but I'm going to assume I somehow screwed it up in trying to "iTunes" the thing. I've just reset it and am starting from scratch. I've got a few Valium's left over so hopefully I won't get so worked-up...

haha...

Google Music and Google Picasa. Done. Android doesn't need a computer to sync anything up. Contact export out to Gmail and it will just sync. Use dropbox to automatically upload pictures or use drop sync like I do to manage the files on both the internal memory and external memory.

It is different than apple yes, no software is required on the computer, I have yet to use Kies or anything else they just goof things up, including itunes.

It is almost 2013 needing to plug your phone in for anything other than maybe flashing is old fashioned.

Enjoy the sg3 and give Google Music and Picasa a shot.

Here is what I use to manage my Web albums.

None of this stuff needs to be stored on the device, I think that is where your frustration is coming from. Kies is not a good piece of software but it is not needed either. The power comes with Google, and also with double twist if you are insistent on syncing locally, even thought android is really made for online from anywhere, it has space for it but should be used for apps and locally cached stuff not the 5000 songs you want, stream it :-)

I cant post links yet so lookup the app "DroidNAS" on play store ... once active on the phone Wifi , you will be able to browse your phone as a regular drive through Finder

Hope it helped !!

If I may chime in, I have also come from an iPhone 4S and have a Mac running 10.8. If you search on YouTube getting kies to work on 10.8 there is a work around to get it fully running on your computer. I will try and update my post with the video link but I can confirm its running.

EDIT:so here's the video, the software that you use just download free of charge on apples app store, you can uninstall it after you get kies installed.
Samsung kies on 10.8
