Root Getting the Desire HD an have no idea where to start

Is there a way to quickly back up all pictures, videos, songs and contacts to bro's PC. Messages too if possible. He dosen't want to lose anything.

I am pretty sure these is for Windows users. using HTC Sync. When I install a new ROM, there is an interface to restore it from the phone. My PC's run Linux and Mac OSX, so I do thing manually and never used HTC Sync.

By the way, the SDCard does not get formatted when you install a new ROM.

Also, does it matter if my SD card is SDHC for rooting? This my seem like a really stupid question but it mattered when I added homebrew to my Wii =P

I do not think so. But best wait for a second opinion.

Ok here goes. I had to do things manually as I use linux. I'm going to read the effen manual a few times and get into it.

One more question first before I start though. The phone was locked to Vodafone AU (An Australian carrier) but was unlocked. Does this affect the rooting process in anyway?

I don't use HTC Sync (I've always thought it was a bit rubbish).

When you plug your phone in and tell it to be a USB storage device, your PC should autostart windows explorer... what I'd do is create a folder on your desktop called "phone stuff" (or whatever) and copy everything on the SD card and put it in there... you can look at keeping only the stuff you want later :)

I used the SD card that came with my phone when I rooted (8GB SDHC), so you're fine :)

It shouldn't affect it... it's not like you've unlocked the bootloader... if you want to check, boot in to HBOOT (power off completely and then power on, whilst holding the volume down button) and tell us what it says :)

If you want to enter recovery via volume down and power you will need to turn fast boot off. Once you get to the the old fashioned looking screen, take down what it says on the first four or five lines. Pay particular attention to an entry that should read S-On or S-Off.

Ok The ace hack kit went through and phone has rebooted!!

How can I check if its rooted correctly?

Where can I start with installing ROMS? Any good one for me to start with?

Once you verify that you are rooted I recommend you install 4Ext Touch Recovery. This will replace Clockworkmod recovery. This is optional. Some prefer CWM others 4Ext. Will post links and pics as soon as I get home.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure back-up first. You can do this with CWM or 4Ext. You will need about 800MB of space on your MicroSD card to do this.

Thanks you need to go shopping for a ROM.

Sorry I've replied so late. I started playing xbox and lost track of time. I will leave installing A ROM until tomorrow. :)

I have superuser and busybox so I assume I am sure I am rooted. I'll use root checker tomorrow and will post back when I have chosen a ROM!

Also is there a way to get rid of all the bloatware installed by the original carrier?

i agree 100% ext 4 is a much nicer recovery. also great advice on making a backup. it may be the only way you can get bck to a stock rom(assuming the aahk didnt have to downgrade your entire rom)

depends on wether ral can talk you over to the dark side :p they have cool widgets but their roms take up more memory :D

if youre into the sense ui,ral is our resident expert and can guide you well.

if you prefer or want to give AOSP a try, ice cold sandwich is the standard for AOSP ICS,while alot of us have moved up to jellytime ir unofficial cm10 variants, wich are jellybean. youll just need to read the buglists and see if you can live with whats working or not working.

there are numerous ways to get rid of bloat. easiest way is the paid version of titanium backup, wich will let you freeze apps prior to permantly deleting them,so you can easily run the phone a few days and make sure their absense does not affect anythign else. deleting the wrong things can wreak havok,so be careful what you delete, only do a few at a time to make troubleshooting easier if needed, and make periodic backups so if you get too jammed up you dont have to start completely over.

there are other market apps to delet bloat, but ive not perosnally used them.

you can also physically delete or move .apks using root explorer. they will be located in system/app. a common trick is to rename what you dont want to xxxx.bak instead of xxxx.apk,or to physically move them to a folder on your sd in case you ever want to put them back. :)

lol Scotty... I'm surprised that OTD hasn't got you yet!! :) I guess it is only early October though and she does have the whole month :)

Yaddah yaddah yaddah... Yup they have lots of free empty, unused and wasted RAM and light widgets. Its like putting the engine of a Ferrari in a Yugo. This phone has 768 MB of RAM for peats sake.

I'm surprised that OTD hasn't got you yet!

OTD? If its a private joke, no need to answer. Of course, we than will be free to speculate.

Serious advice. Its your first Android, so you really should try both. It is a matter of which one you try first.

Sense is like getting a car with all the trimmings. AOKP is like getting a do it yourself kit. Of course, from another point of view, Sense is bloat.

I would advice something very conservative.

Android Revolution HD 6.3.3 - Basically a stock ROM tweaked for performance and battery life. You start @root with a 100% bug free environment. Introduces Android to you in the most stable environment possible. Gives you time to make sure the phone has no hardware issues. A nice environment to try things like governors (cpu control scripts) and over-clocking (actually its over clocked by default). Bored yet? :)

You will get bored of this in a bit, and it will be time to move on.

If you skip this at the start... no point going to it in the future.

Cons. No bragging rights. It like showing up in a bike with training wheels.

Man, if the XDA - ARHD guys ever see this, I am dead.

Blackout ICS - Sense + Ice Cream Sandwich. Its what I use, so it must be good :smokingsomb:

Cons If you want this one wait for the official 3.2 release. The current one is buggy. The new one still does not have a functional WiFi hotspot.

TrickDroid - Newer Sense (what HTC sells these days) + Ice Cream Sandwich. Not a bad choice actually. No major issues. You can even remove Sense and use it like an AOKP ROM.

Cons. BUT IT IS THE INSTALL FROM HELL. I can guide you trough it, but remember, installing a ROM is never this difficult. So it should not dissuade you from trying others in the future.

Pros Once you have installed this, it will be like you installed 3-4 ROM's. Overnight expert.

Ice Cold Sandwich 8.7 - Ice Cream Sandwich. Think Nexus. I will let D-U-R-X convince you about this one. This is probably what you will choose.

Start with one of these four. Don't worry about picking the wrong one. I am have been at this for 70 days. I have flashed 20+ times. And they are good experiences. I flash a lot because they are so many toys in the store, and they are all free.

So, after all this yammering, which picture above appeals to you most :D

I forgot.

also great advice on making a backup.

I had these obsessive pair of teachers. Always rambling on with long pieces of advice and explaining everything in detail.

20+ flashes. 0 failures (okay I screwed up a perfectly good CM7.2 install with the GetRIL app).

It is great advice, but it really is not my advice :)

ral is your man when it comes to Sense... I highly recommend IceColdSandwich (but I am a fan of Vanialla Android! :))

This one is perfect for scotty.

Ok. Yes my phone was downgraded during root. I have decided I will go with Android Revolution 6.3.3 until I get my head around Android then give ICS a go.

Before I start though, how do I go about getting 4ext recovery and make a backup/restore that backup?

Once I have a backup I would be more open to experimenting ;)

And what is Busybox?

Once I have that point me to the right direction and Ill get started on putting on this new ROM!

Edit: how do I improve battery life? I have only been browsing the net for 35 minutes or so and my battery is doen from 100% to 65%? Is this normal?

Takes forever to charge as well

Download 4Ext Recovery updated from here.

It will give you a preview of the full version, but the free version is fine.

OT: Can someone teach me how to make clickable thumbnails?

Launch the app:

Select Online install/upgrade. It will ask you for permission to go online and to confirm if your phone is a DHD or Inspire 4G

Select the 4Ext Recovery Touch v.1.0.0.5 RC 6. It is yellow in the image (meaning installed) it should be blue in yours.

Than select install.

Note: 4Ext is mandatory for ARHD 6.3.3.

No, but looks like it might be that the battery is old and has been degraded over normal use. That is more than double the typical power consumption. Or maybe screen brightness was set to full?
