Root Getting the Desire HD an have no idea where to start

4Ext Recovery Control (which you now have a preview of) will allow you to do stuff from within Android. I don't do this. I use it only for two things:

  • Update 4 Ext Recovery
  • Reboot into recovery (saves my power and volume buttons from some wear
and tear).

Make sure you have about 1.6 GB free on your SDCard (700-800 MB for recovery the rest you will need later to install the new ROM, actually this is more than you need now, but for future ROM's this is a minimum figure).

Select power menu and lets reboot into recovery.

2nuug0p.png

The phone will reboot... and welcome to Mars (sorry Mods, scaled down images fuzzy so switching to larger images).

1oq0wk.png

This has the same effect as booting volume down/power. You don't have to disable fastboot.

Select backup | restore

2w50sax.png

Select backup and confirm that you want to do this.

jkyw0g.png

The process should take 4-5 minutes.

Once done, you can use the <-- button on the bottom of each page or on your phone to get back to the main screen and select reboot.

Congratulations, you created your first Nandroid back-up.

Once your downloads are done. Lets move on.

  • First lets check battery level. Doing all this will take 15-20 minutes, and this is battery draining work so lets charge up to at least 70% to be sure.
  • Next, lets move the files into your SDCard. Put all three zip files into the "root" of you SDCard. Sound technical. All it means is don't put them into a folder. Don't unzip them.
  • Plug your phone into your PC with the USB cable.
  • A notification will pop up asking if you want to plug in as "Charge only" or or "Disk drive". Select the Disk drive option. This effectively makes the SDCard on your phone into a flash drive. OT: Don't use it like a flash drive. Never erase files from here. Copying to and from is fine. Don't delete it will create a trash folder which waste space.
  • Copy the three files. When done, unmount or eject as you would do with a flash drive.
  • Unplug the phone from the PC.

Remember that md5sum number in the earlier post. That is to make sure that the downloaded file is not corrupted.

You need an app to check md5sums. There are several on Google Play (app store/Android Market).

I use Root Explorer. You can get the free version called Explorer. Publisher is speed software.

It works like your file manager on Linux. Open the app, browse to "sdcard" look for Android_Revolution_HD-4G_6.3.3.zip. Do a long press and select properties. After a few seconds the md5sum figure will be displayed. If the numbers match. We are good to go.

So the numbers match.

BACK INTO RECOVERY.

This time, select "install from sdcard", and this will pop-up:

11kxez4.png

If you have not checked the md5sum with an app, you can also check it from here. I don't like waiting till the last minute to do it, since... sometimes at this point I am so excited I forget to do it.

Scroll to the bottom, you will see the first three zip files.

3467tpv.png

You will see different zip files from the pic.

Select this file first and confirm you action: Android_Revolution_HD_Super_Wipe_Desire_HD.zip

The phone will reboot. This does what we call a full wipe. Normally I do it manually but the Developer of this ROM created a one step script that does it all for you. But lets talk about that later. For now. Lets wait for the phone to reboot... who thing should take 20 seconds.

Repeat the process but this time select: Android_Revolution_HD-4G_6.3.3.zip

You will be asked several questions during the install. For now stick with all the default settings and say Yes to all questions asked. You will need to press the power button to select yes if I remember correctly.

One done. Reboot the phone. First boot on a new ROM take some time 5-10 minutes. Subsequent reboots are much faster.

Sometime I forget something. D-U-R-X or scotty85 or someone else should pass by a review my post. Wait for one of them to give the go ahead.

Good luck. Enjoy the ROM. Will be out for the next 16 hours or so. But after that lets mod the thing more, install apps or play with speeds and voltages :smokingsomb: You decide what you want to do next.

Oh, the third file. The revert to 1 GHz.

Stock DHD settings are 1024 MHz @ 1200 vdd
This ROM sets it at 1152 MHz @ 1075 vdd. Overclocked and undervolted.

Some phone cannot boot on the new settings (very very few). If your phone does not boot go back into recovery and flash Set_to_default_1GHz.zip.

OOOPPPSSSS.... as you can see from my images, I don't follow my 70% battery life advice.

Do as I say, don't do as I do. You can do it with less battery power, but for now lets stay on the safe side.

Wow. Thanks, I will start reading these posts =)

I need to charge my phone first, so I will wait for D-U-R-X or Scotty to confirm while it does.

My brightness was on full. I will set it to about half way?

Guess I will buy a external battery in the future. I like bright screens =P

Edit: Are the instructions the same for all ROMs?

OT: Can someone teach me how to make clickable thumbnails?

No... it's a trade secret ;)

Seriously, I don't know myself... I'm sure someone else will be able to tell us though :)

No, but looks like it might be that the battery is old and has been degraded over normal use. That is more than double the typical power consumption. Or maybe screen brightness was set to full?

It doesn't sound great, but flashing a new ROM could sort it out... your battery stats would be wiped. It is worth downloading Current Widget, as this will tell you when the battery is no longer accepting charge. You will notice that, even if the DHD is telling you that battery is at 100%, the could actually still be taking trickle charge... this could end up meaning that your battery life gets better :)

(sorry Mods, scaled down images fuzzy so switching to larger images).

No need to worry ral... if an image is too large, the forums should scale it down automatically :)

Wow. Thanks, I will start reading these posts =)

Wow indeed - very detailed posts by ral :)

I need to charge my phone first, so I will wait for D-U-R-X or Scotty to confirm while it does.

All looks good to me (I don't use 4EXT, I'm currently using Team Win Touch Recovery)

My brightness was on full. I will set it to about half way?

Guess I will buy a external battery in the future. I like bright screens =P

Here are a couple of things that you could consider with regards to battery life - adjust the screen brightness, do not use live wallpapers, switch off networks when not in use (WIFI, Bluetooth, GPS), adjust update intervals for widgets (do you really need twitter/facebook notifications every half hour?). You could also consider downloading a battery monitoring app such as JuiceDefender (some people report that JD actually causes battery drain - I don't use it myself).

Edit: Are the instructions the same for all ROMs?

Flashing one ROM is pretty much the same as flashing another (there are some exceptions, when an installer is used)... just remember, the important thing is to BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP... always better to have backed up and not needed it, than to have not backed up and the flash to go wrong. Not really an issue if it doesn, as you can always reflash something else but, if something does go wrong, I prefer to go back to how my phone was just before the flash went wrong :)

Okay. I will flash ARHD in the morning for me. I'n sure the battery will last. Thanks for all the tips on battery life.
Last question of the night! (Sorry if I ask too many :P) where is my backup stored? I can't seem to find it with explorer...

Edit: sorry again, but I swear this is the last question of the night! How do I change the update intervals for widgets (I use the Twitter one)

No worries :)

Last question of the night! (Sorry if I ask too many :P)

Don't apologize - there's no limit on the questions - we won't start charging you ;) Better to ask and be sure :)

where is my backup stored? I can't seem to find it with explorer...

Backups are stored in the folder for whichever recovery you are using. My backups are in a folder called TWRP (or something like that)... they used to be in a folder called "ClockWork" (or somthing like that) :)

Edit: sorry again, but I swear this is the last question of the night! How do I change the update intervals for widgets (I use the Twitter one)

I don't really use anything like Twitter... ral will be able to give you a better answer, but I imagine you should be able to go in to it and press menu and chose an option from within there :)

Twitter. Click the Menu button - - -> Settings - - - > Accounts & Sync - - - > Twitter, than adjust the update interval.

The instructions for all ROM's are generally the same. Will post when I get home about how to do a full wipe using 4Ext instead of a custom script. I will also try to convince you to flash a few mods :-) Also how to restore a backup. Once you learn that, you can make mistakes, knowing that going back to your previous stable install, all set up like you left it is 5 minutes away. After that, you can make most mistakes with no consequence.

Just take small steps. For now we are spoon feeding you (like I was two months ago). After you flash a ROM, a few mods it strangely all starts to make sense. And it does not take that long. None of us has tried everything, so soon you will be sharing what you know with us.

Remember, a few months down the road, when someone asks for help on how to do all this ... You owe him one.

Don't thank me. I am just paying a debt. But if you can click one Thanks button each for Scotty85, D-U-R-X, El President, CDPlant, Mehta23, and BrutalUK, I would be very appreciative.

I'm posting with the phone but will be sure to thank those people when I get onto the PC!

I know in a few months time I will probably be helping people out like you are helping me ;)

Turns out my backup was placed in the clockworkmod folder even though I used ext4.

Looking forward to getting those instructions Ral!

We have a pretty good little root community on the go here... unlike some other parts of AF, where there isn't so much traffic.

This ^^ :)

I don't think that the phone will charge whilst actually flashing a ROM

i dont know if its charging while actually flashing, but it should charge while in recovery.

not much else to add at all... most excellent directions by ral, couldnt have said it better! seems he had D-U-R-X have you sorted pretty well :smokingsomb:

to make a thumbnail, you should be able to just aTTACH the pics to the post uisng the attach files box in an advanced post/reply. they should then end up along the bottom of that post, clickable for those that want a closer look. just click manage files, then choose the ones you want to upload.

this pic is nothing important, just somethin on the PC... is this what youre after with the clickable thumbnails?

Seems a bit slower than before but its still good!

Now, what are these mods you mentioned :P

IT's a GREAT PHONE. ENJOY :D
Try search for Blackmart Alpha on the net. I think must be Useful to you since u also jailbreak your iPhone previously.

I'm Also a DesireHD user. Cheers! =)

There is are threads on XDA devoted to ARHD mods. Remember only use those for ARHD 6.3.3 or ARHD 6.3.x and not those for ARHD 7.0.x.

Mods for Android Revolution HD
Patrics83 Mods for ARHD

You should get used to checking things out on XDA too. Basically, a good place to shop (think of it as a toy store). Careful what you post there, it is not the friendliest place on earth for newbies. Think of Android Forums as the bar you go to after work.

A bit slower. Hhhmmm, that all the 3D widgets, if you want to flatten them try a Ultra Smooth Rosie mod.

Now how do you install this:

a) Download the zip and copy to the root of your SDCard
b) Go into recovery
c) Flash the zip file or zip files you want, like you did the ROM.
d) DO NOT WIPE/OR FORMAT ANYTHING

Now if you look at Patrics83 mods he has a revert to stock option:

6.3.x - 4x5

6.3.x - 4x5 no dividers

6.3.x - 4x5 Super Smooth Rosie

6.3.x - 4x5 Super Smooth Rosie no dividers

6.3.x - 4x5 Ultra Smooth Rosie

6.3.x - 4x5 Ultra Smooth Rosie no dividers

6.3.x - Revert to Stock

If you don't like the changes flash Revert to Stock. With others it is a one way ticket. How to revert if you don't like a change? Restore a back-up.

So before you flash this, how about you back-up your ROM again.

Restoring a ROM is similar to backing-up. I will break the topic here so it does not get confusing.

How do you restore a back-up:

a) Go into Recovery.
b) Do a full wipe.
c) Select back-up | restore.
d) When done, reboot.

Easy.

Full wipe

When you installed ARHD 6.3.3 you did a full wipe using a zip file (Android_Revolution_HD_Super_Wipe_Desire_HD.zip). This is what the ROM developer for ARHD recommends.

Now normally, and for other ROM's we do a full wipe using Recovery. When people talk about a full wipe, you think we are all talking about the same thing. I have never found full consensus on what a full wipe is.

Anyway lets select the wipe | format option from the main menu.

34zm43o.png

A full wipe is:

a) wipe data/factory reset
b) wipe cache
c) wipe dalvik cache

You can do all three by selecting the first and third options on the screen.

What does this do. Basically, it restores your ROM to its state after you originally installed. Any apps you installed are gone.

Some ROM developers have specific instructions on how to wipe.

Some recommend doing one additional step:

a) wipe data/factory reset
b) wipe cache
c) wipe dalvik cache
d) format all partitions (except sdcard).

BUT IF YOU DO IT THIS WAY, AND REBOOT THE PHONE, REMEMBER THERE IS NOTHING IN YOUR PHONE. This is the way I do it. But, like I said don't do as I do. Do what I adviced above.

OR

a) format all partitions (except sdcard).
b) wipe data/factory reset

(This last one does not make sense to me) @scotty85, D-U-R-X chime in please

OR

Some other variation.

Basically, when you install a new ROM or Mod, read the instructions.

Enjoy.

OT: The instructions were straight forward enough. Followed, size and format requirements. Still cannot upload an attachment. Anyway, embedded in post is actually clearer.

wich part does not make sense? if youre refering to format all partitions except sd card and factory reset,it doesnt really make sense to me either  format all partitions should wipe, well, all partitions :D data, cache, dalvik(not a partition, but it lives inside data,so technically wipe data=wipe dalvik caceh),boot and system. not sure if battery stats will get wiped as well,as battery stats is not really a partition, tho it is on the wipe menu.

IMO its not a bad idea to add boot and system to the recomended data, cache, and dalvik cache, but most roms are scripted to do this anyway at install,so you could debate if its a completely needed step. there may be a couple very rare ocasions when htcdev unlock is involved that you do not want to wipe boot, but since youre s-off,wiping boot and system would not likely hurt you, unless your intention was simply to erase your personal data,as wiping system and boot,as ral said, leaves you with nothing. youd then need to reflash a rom or backup to get a working phone back.

if youre going to wipe data, cache, dalvik, boot and system, "wipe all partitions except sd card" is a good one stop wipe option. :)

@D-U-R-X

Score one for the dark side.

aww... why is there not an "oh snap!" button?! :D :p
