Help Okay seriously... WHAT is wrong with my battery?

Hi new member here.

I'm sure there are numerous threads on battery problems but this is an extreme battery drain overnight. I went to sleep last night FULLY CHARGED and woke up with 5%. This happens almost every night. And please don't say "well why can't you just charge it overnight?"

I have done all the battery preserving techniques such as darkening my phone, turning off S-Voice, etc... I've tried everything.

Here are some pics of one of my battery drain last night:

This is WITH sync off. So gmail and all my other accounts are not syncing. Yes, I have Wi-Fi on but I've had it on before and didn't have this problem so it can't be that. I've tried so many things lol. From these pics, it's apparent that something is running while I'm asleep. But with syncs off and me killing apps in my task manager and removing all of them from my menu and all that, what can it be?

This is my first Android (been a lifelong iPhone user) so I would like a better experience. I love the phone overall but this problem is annoying lol. Thanks.

Welcome to Android Forums, Blenkows!:)

Well, you don't say what phone you have, but that seems like extreme battery drain while your phone is not in use. It could be a faulty battery. Might be worth taking it into your service provider for troubleshooting.

Edit: I thought that might be your phone, because I have the same phone with AT&T and the same exact problem, and no matter what I have done to try to improve it, it still drains way too much for the amount of use. I have the same phone with Verizon, and it has fantastic battery life! I can't figure out why it should be so drastically different with AT&T, when all other factors are the same. Of course, the two networks run on two different technologies, but my other AT&T phone (Galaxy Note LTE) has great battery life.

I think you have a rogue app running, because as you can see your phone is constantly awake, while it should be asleep.

If you really want a fix, try a factory reset. But you could search the rogue app yourself.

I would review the apps you've downloaded. One app may be the cause of this problem.

Also, check the Samsung Galaxy SIII forum and see what users there have experienced.

The thing is, last night, I ran the task manager "kill all apps" and even did the other "remove apps" where you hold the home button down. AND I took sync off. How can an app be running on its own? And if so, how do I actually kill it? Since the task manager doesn't seem to make a difference.

I have tried the factory reset, and even switched out batteries between my two phones, and it is stiill a problem with the AT&T phone. I have all of the same apps installed on both phones, and have calibrated my AT&T battery several times with little to no improvement. I know how frustrating this can be.

I noticed your top drain is from cell standby and I see your signal is only at 2 bars, is it like that most of the day? I noticed when I have poor reception my battery life is really bad. Try running in airplane mode for a few hours and see what the battery drain is like.

Let's assume it was for the entire night. Is that seriously enough to lose 90-95 percent battery? And would that cause my phone to be "awake" when it's "sleeping"

have you gotten the lastest software updates for your device?
if so, then I would get a new battery.
I do think it is a rouge app but it doesn't seem to show up on your first screenie.

I keep doing the task killing methods and this still happens so if it is a rogue app, how is it happening?

Yes, I have the latest software

Btw don't kill android processes true apps, because then the OS needs to start up the killed processes again which drains battery. Thats why its in my opinion dangerous to use task killers. (The standard way off closing apps true holding the home button doesn't harm anything, im just talking about apps)

You don't complain about this problem happening during the day, only the night. This isn't a battery problem.

How many apps have you downloaded? I bet one of them is giving you a problem.

As suggested, use "better battery stats" and see what wake locks are occurring. Your device has an awake time throughout the night. Even though the screen is off, something is still keeping the device awake even if you've used the built-in task manager and closed open apps you're running. There are still tons of processes that can be running. Don't get a task killer, use better battery stats to find the rogue app keeping the wake lock count high, delete that app and I'm willing to bet your battery goes back to normal.

Esp for jelly bean a task manager will do more harm than good, they aren't suggested.

You have an app that is keeping your phone awake. I just had the same problem with an app called open signal maps. I didn't even open the app and it was draining 40 or more percent of my battery. It's a well respected app but for some reason It was sucking the life out of my phone. It's since been deleted.

You probably wouldn't notice this problem during the day bc judging by this... You charge your phone during the day. Yes?

Having wifi on will actually help battery life. Since your phone isn't constantly looking for signal that helps out alot.

How long have you noticed your phone acting like this? What apps have you recently installed?

It is possible. There are times when I am in a bad signal area and my battery drops 30-40% in an hour or two. So fully draining in 7-8hrs is not impossible. I would turn off mobile data before you go to sleep and see if it helps.

Your phone seems to be waking up all the time. Looks like an app trying to connect or email trying to sync at certain intervals.

Well, last night was another trial. I downloaded GSam battery and here are the results.

This is WITH Wifi and syncing and everything on. I should note that during the night, I got a FB notification and didn't check it until this morning. So basically I was getting the blue LED flash reminder thing every few seconds which maybe could be the culprit? I'm aware I could turn this off, but is this what's causing it? The results from GSam says cell radio is responsible (which is consistent with the results from "battery" in settings

So I'm not "searching for a signal" because as you can see, I have no reception troubles. So what can it be?

EDIT: As you can see, it levels off at one point. That's because I woke up in the middle of the night and saw my battery was getting low so I turned on airplane mode (which I hate to do)

Correct, I do charge my phone during the day. But even for an 8 hour period of no charging, I shouldn't be losing 90% battery life, ESPECIALLY since my phone is supposed to be "asleep".

My phone has been doing this since I got it. The only thing I can think of that might be causing this is FB since I got this app on day 1 however I set "refresh rate" to NEVER a few weeks ago. And when I first did it, for the first few nights of this, my battery was working fine. Now it's back to this.

Try this it works for me when I notice bad apps or system apps, GSam does not find this for me (at least the system run away app)

Download Elixir 2 from Google Play (it's free) and go into running processes and scroll left one to 'top'.

If you see gsiff_daemon then you've got the same problem as I did.
