Help Music wanted as ringtone but ....

I downloaded a MP3 and it went into my music folder. This is my first smartphone and my first day playing with it. I have been reading all the posts here and still don't understand how to set it up as a ringtone. Any help? One person said under "media" place a new folder titles "ringtone". I went looking and I saw the folder with com.cooliris.media on it. Is this where I go into and place a new folder and name it ringtones? A little confused here. LOL

Go in to the stock music player app and play the song. Then press the menu button (on the bottom of your phone, second from the left, in between the home and back buttons) and select "use as ringtone".
 
Open up your app drawer and open the Music Player app.

I only have 2 songs on my phone so it's easy for me, but you have to navigate to wherever the song is.

Play the song.

Press the menu button on your phone below your screen (the button between the home and back buttons) and select "use as ringtone".

Tell your friends to call you so you can enjoy your new ringtone.
 
You must have hit the wrong button. Follow Dark One's instructions again. You want to press this button while the song is playing...

There is also an app called Ringdroid that you can use to clip bits of a song or mp3 and turn it into a ringtone.
 
Or download an app called Ringtone Maker. It will allow you to make ringtones from mp3s and to set ringtones to specific users in your address book (one for Mom, another one for the SO, a third one for the boss... etc.)

One of many apps that do the job, just the one I've always used.
 
I tried that "play song/menu/set as ringtone" route and after I turned the off and back on it would revert back to one of the built in ringtones. This is what I had to do to make the mp3 stay as a permanent ringtone:

Create a "ringtones" folder under the "media" folder on your phone (phone storage, NOT on SD card). Copy the mp3 from your SD card to this new folder. The mp3 will then show up under the normal ringtone choices for you to pick. And it stays after power off/on.
 
I'm new here, so bear with me...I am trying to set my own ringtones on the Optimus Elite, but cannot figure out how to open a new folder on the internal storage...I can see my ringtones on the menu (from sd card) but everytime I power the phone off and back on, the ringtones need to be re-set for each contact....please explain exactly how to do this in the media folder (it that is where it needs to be)! Thank you all very much!!

Here's how:

mp3 ringtone lost after power off
 
Make a folder on the internal sdcard and name it ringtones, put the file there, it will come up as an option for ringtones.

I already have a "ringtones" folder on my internal sd card, and the phone recognizes the ringtones. The problem is that when I power off and then back on, they need to be re-set for each contact. From what I understand, I need to create a "media" folder in the INTERNAL MEMORY...what i need someone to explain is how to create that "media" folder in the INTERNAL memory, not on the sd card...I know I could just download an app, but come on, half of the fun is trying to figure this stuff out! Thank you all so far for the replies!
 
There is already the ringtone folder on the internal memory located at /system/media/audio/, the problem is that you need root access to copy files into it. If you are rooted, this is easy enough to do.
 
Not rooted, so an app is required then? I thought maybe there was a way to hook it to my laptop in order to read the internal memory...thank you for your response!

You can use ADB to push the ringtone to /system/media/audio/ringtones or /system/media/audio/alarms or /system/media/audio/notifications

There are apps that you can use to set ring tone such as zedge or a plethora of others. I'm not sure how they do it exactly.

The problem with it being on the sdcard is that it isn't mounted as soon as the device boots and when the sound isn't found the system replaces it with another sound. I've not had this happen all the time, but it does happen sometimes.
