Mugen 4600mAh For the S3

Just heard about this battery for the S3 On techradar and immediately caught my attention as it made a statement about "Doubling" the life of the Samsung galaxy S3. But for a bit of a hefty price (For a battery Anyways) of
 
Interesting, 4600mAh battery, Nicee. Thats more than enough to get through the day. However, my personal preference for my S3 is to just get a spare battery. For about $40 at a retail store, it doubles the life of the phone for the day. Not to mention, when your battery gets to the end of its life (after so many charges and recharges, batteries tend to wear out) if you just buy a spare battery you wont have to rely on one single battery. Also, that 4600mAh battery will add some bulk, which is soemthing I personally don't want, especially when my case might not fit.
It's up to you, but if you really need that extra 2500mAh for the day, you might be on your phone a bit too much ;)
 
I have yet to try a Mugen battery, but i've heard that while they are pretty good quality compared to most other 3rd party batteries, apparently they don't hold the charge that is advertised. You should get an increase in battery life but I don't think it would double.

However as I say this is only what I've heard, they may turn out to be amazing :) I think
 
I've purchased a Mugen battery before and it was the last time I will do so. I was plagued with battery problems from the start and they flat out refused to help me in any way. Ignored my emails and erased my requests for help on their facebook page. I then left a review of the battery on their site as well and it never saw the light of day. Take a look through any other of their batteries, they will all have 5 star reviews. Right... Good or bad battery, their customer service is non existant.
 
Thanks for the replies everyone! I think I will avoid buying the mugen battery then based on what wraithevolution says. I think I will just by another Samsung 2100mAh battery as a spare and swap them round when one dies.

I sorta hate peeling off the back - feels like I'm going to break a tab or something - so I don't like the idea of swapping a battery all the time. I liked my old Galaxy 1 Captivate which has a nice positive lock/unlock and then the back just lifts out.
 
Just ordered the MUGEN POWER 4600 extended battery for my SGSIII.
ETA based on previous purchase direct from MUGEN in Hong Kong:10 days.

Sort of continuing on from http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...-battery-back-just-arrived-4.html#post5055958 but since the topic changed, I've started a new thread.

The battery arrived a bit sooner than expected, and it's charging up to get ready for a run through the CBA-III battery analyzer. Once I have 2 tests done, I'll determine from that whether or not I need another. Then I will make a review.

The first test finished: Mugen 4600mAh battery for Samsung Galaxy S3 Battery 1, Test 1

The result is a bit disappointing for $89; the battery tested to have 4181mAh capacity. I'm going to run it through at least another test and see if the results improve at all or not.

I used an external charger... Once I get it charged back up again, I'll put it in my phone use an app called "OS Monitor" to tell me if the phone is continuing to charge the battery or not. I've done that procedure with other batteries to ensure that the charger is charging batteries as full as possible. The result is that the phone did not continue to charge them. The capacity readings from other batteries (standard and extended) were as expected when using the charger, too.

The part number that I show in the picture is SWB495060AR/12F25001; it has same number and identical appearance of the cells as in the Hyperion, Onite, and Gorilla Gadgets batteries. (I figured out the best way to capture the writing on the battery only recently so it's difficult to make out from the pictures, but they are all the same.)

Even though the Gorilla Gadgets 4500mAh battery has the same part number as the Hyperion 4200mAh and Onite 4500mAh batteries, it actually tested to have 210mAh more capacity than the Hyperion battery. The manufacturer must have some sort of binning for the batteries, but I haven't found (if it even exists) the distinguishing mark. I'd welcome the opportunity to have someone that knows more about the part numbers or any other distinguishing marks that there may(or may not) be to comment. But for now, I have this chart.

There's more to say than just a chart (and I review each battery in detail on my website), but charts are still fun, so here they are: Standard Batteries, and Extended Batteries.

On top of that, my Seidio battery came in today and I do not have nice things to say about it... This is why: HUGE SHIMS! This battery has the biggest shims I've seen yet! I really am in disbelief. That's right, $57.58 for this(link to the actual item I got from Amazon).

I have a "R"-rated (one scene of mild cursing, explicit full battery nudity [it's more like pg-13]) video of me unboxing and exposing this scam: right here. It's 2:42 long.

The battery only claims to be 3500mAh, but it has the same physical dimensions as any other extended battery.
 
So you think the mugen might be identical to the hyperion?

Pretty much, yes. But the Gorilla Gadgets battery taught me that even having the same part numbers, capacity can vary considerably.

Second test: 4220mAh

It might take a while, but I'll keep doing it until I get 2 tests that are the same, or two that are both lower.

Second test: 4430mAh

Same capacity, but it's slightly different on the chart; the second run seems to maintain a higher voltage. There is also a transient near the beginning that I'm not really sure what it is.

Edit:

It looks like I thought I was on the third test when I started the Mugen test and the legend reflects this. Even though it says "#3" it's the second test.

I just remembered that I had intended to put the battery in my phone after it had been charged with the external charger, and I did do just that. It charged for about 7 minutes (still said 100% the whole time) before the charging state changed from charging to full.
 
I always try to have a battery being tested (usually can manage 2 every 24 hours) so I'll eventually test this battery again. However, I think it's safe to say that from the results of the third test, the capacity of the battery has been pretty well determined.

Test #1: 4180mAh
Test #2: 4220mAh
Test #3: 4190mAh

That averages to 4197mAh capacity. Pretty expected results considering the Onite, GG, Hyperion, and Mugen batteries appear to use identical cells. What isn't expected is how the GG battery manages to have the best capacity out of the bunch.

The unique thing about the Mugen battery appears to be how the back plate has a tab at the top to assist in removing it... along with a kickstand. It appears to work but how it actually works surprised me...

From this view you see the two fingers used to hold the kickstand in place. The one on the left appears to be trying to getting out of there. Also see another view. You'll have to zoom in to make it out, but that finger is not perpendicular to the hole it's supposed to be rotating in, it's angled southwest. If you're interested in seeing an 0:18 clip of it in action, you can do so right here. I apologize in advance for the blurriness but I think my point will get across.

My point for focusing (no pun intended) on that aspect is that it's so cheap it's comical, and for $89, being critical of the feel of special features seems reasonable. It looks like they have to shove this thing in to install it, and apparently mine was treated too roughly which caused fatigue on the finger assembly. Enough talking about it, see it for yourself.

With 3 tests done, I believe it's time to start writing the full review of this battery.
 
what did you use to tell you the Mah of he battey in those 3 tests? I have an extended battery that is supposed to be 4500Mah for the S3 and would like to be able to find out how close it is to the advertised capacity.

I have a hunch...even though I've been wrong before...that the battery you have is probably not worth the money paid. If you'll stick around for me to test and review it, I'd be glad to get one for myself and test it.

I look forward to the review, I believe the battery is decent capacity. It does seem to be lasting longer than the stock i haven't charged it fully since i got it last night and I have used bluetooth, wifi, games, lte network, live 365 etc.. But, my guess it isn't 4500 but i am going to guess closer to 3600 though I can't be sure and would love a review of it.:)
 
Only took 9 days from HONG KONG to arrive via USPS(once stateside, of course).

Will be posting initial results in a couple days, initial battery conditioning (charging/discharging) will require overnight charging of 8-12 hrs after a full charge for 4-5 charging/discharging cycles as recommended by MUGEN.

With the stock battery it would drop 1% every 4min 30sec while doing the same thing.

I did not have GPS on at either time. I know it's not a very scientific or conclusive test but, I have to believe it means something about the true capacity of the extended battery.

Is that 4 hours screen time after the 21 hours its been on? Because thats pretty good i'd say esp with the battery at 46%. Thats probably pushing 7-8 hours screen time, possibly more :)

I'm not an expert... but as far as I know, the battery itself keeps track of how much current has gone in and out of it, and that is how the state of charge is tracked. It's not 100% accurate though, so an occasional rundown followed by a full charge will recalibrate the internal gauge.

THX for the info! Sounds a LOT better than the indicating on MOTO (PHOTON /ATRIX, ETC...) which only indicated for stock battery capacity.
