Nexus has staying power

Is it just me or are the latest and greatest phones, at best, a minimal improvement over the close to year old Gnex? The GS3 is a really nice phone, but after looking a few of my friends that got it, there was nothing compelling to get me to switch.

It feels like deja vu. My N1 lasted well over a year before I felt it feeling old. I skipped the Nexus S and am thinking I'll probably skip the next Nexus, whatever the name / names of them are. I don't play many games on my phone, and all the apps I use for general productivity fly on my Gnex. When I finally upgraded from my N1, I was dying for a larger, brighter screen. This time around, there isn't anything I'm dying for. Got JB and Google Now, what else could I want?

Am I alone in this? :confused:
 
Honestly most of the upgrades to the devices have been on the hardware side, just bumping things up little by little.

Personally the biggest jump was probably to ICS...Jelly bean is a nice added touch up of ICS, but looks relatively similar.

The S3 actually rates a lot better than the GNex, even though you might think they are similar, the difference is in computing power of the S3.

I have been thinking of getting the Note 2 once it releases, but i dont know about spending all that money to get it, since i won't have an upgrade with Verizon. To be honest you might want to wait until the S4, hopefully to be released around Q2 2013...should be a decent jump above the new devices...hopefully :)
 
Yeah, I see that all the latest devices have faster processors, but when it comes to running most non-gaming apps, is there a noticeable difference?

I can see switching to the Note 2 if you like the idea of a huge screen. A few guys at work have the original Note and say that the huge screen is really nice. They say it has a few issues with one handed operation, but really how often do you need to operate your phone with one hand. Overall, they say the pros of the large screen out weight the cons.

I hope I am pleasantly surprised that the new Nexus or one of the new Nexi that come out have something that wows me. Most likely, I think my Gnex and I will continue our relationship a little longer.
 
I hear ya! My wife got an S3 and I don't see anything in it that would make me wanna switch. Anything I needed a bigger screen for I got with the N7. Would like wifi connect to work on my phone, but that's about it. Wish I could do that cool phone-bumping thing to share pictures, but I guess I'll just have to wait until the S3 gets Jelly Bean.

That and a louder speaker and better battery life. Has anybody brought those issues up yet :banghead:?
 
I fully agree. My phone is performing the functions I need to day in and day out with no lag and no systems issues. This was not the case of my previous 2 phones so I upgraded.

I like looking at the new stuff coming out but have not felt the least bit compelled to jump ship. Until there is some new must have software that does not work or my phone becomes buggy I'm good.
 
I'm still really happy with the GNex. The only thing I would want is an S4 chip since it's supposed to help with battery life on 4G. Other than that, I'm happy and don't see me getting anything from this round of Nexi. next year though...
 
I plan on having this phone for as long as I can put up with it... I'm a slow adopter though. I generally wait until the technology is quite a bit more advanced than what I currently have.

I stuck out the BB Storm 1 for 2.5 years, my laptop is almost 6 years old (& hopefully lasting another year or two), and I have had the GNex since it's December release. I plan on having the Gnex for at least another year, probably more as long as it is still functional. Plus I don't know what VZW's upgrade policies or plans will be by the time I upgrade... I want to keep my current plan (or get something better -- lots of data and i dont care much for unlimited voice/text), and I don't want to pay full price for a new phone in order to keep my current plans...

For me to upgrade its going to have to be:
(1) 3x or more better battery life (say, 6 hrs + screen time with average use on 4G) and not getting as hot
(2) higher resolution screen with better technology
(3) 4GB+ ram, 64GB+ onboard storage, 2.5GHz x 4 cores processor or better

So, that might be asking for a bit much... and will take a few years to get there...

I think the biggest difference if you don't play games would be the battery life.
The S4 chip in the One series and GS3 are a big improvement over the Gnex.

With the Evo 4G Lte (sprint's version of the One X) I can stream Pandora for 10 hours easy on 3G. The Gnex is good for about 8. The Evo has 2000Mah battery and the Gnex 2100Mah.

But I'm using the Nexus currently if that tells you anything.:D

You'll drive yourself crazy always trying to chase the latest and greatest. My GNex does much more than I ever expected from a phone. I think I will be satisfied with it for a good long time. And my battery lasted 18 hours yesterday (with very light use) while I was at home where I have no signal and did not switch over to airplane mode.
 
Well I'll be up for an upgrade in March, so I think I'll get the LG nexus if it comes to Verizon. I bought my GNex used. I like the device, but I take alot of pictures and this camera ain't so good.
 
I bought the GNex about a month ago when my Samsung Fassy bricked, but I'm eligible for an upgrade in February. I'll probably end up buying the S4 whenever it comes out, I can't stand the battery life on the Nexus, but otherwise, it is a fantastic machine
 
Yeah, I'd say the battery is a big complaint everyone has about this phone. I've tweaked the hell out of it, and currently get about 2-3 hours screen time with 18 hours without a charge. The razr maxx gets better than that with no tweaking
 
I really love my Galaxy Nexus. I really, really do. However, since I got the Nexus 7, I'm not really sure what I'm missing. Outside of the 32gb of storage on my phone and the geat looking screeen, the Nexus 7 does everything just as well.

I will be upgrading to a Windows Phone 8 device as soon as they release on Verizon. I actually REALLY look forward to it. Part of the reason that I will be ditching Android as a PHONE OS is because I don't care for the way that they handle the PHONE aspect.

The fragmentation and progression of Android is being held back by carriers and device makers. Don't get me wrong, I love having options and I love having different price points, but I really get sick of every device being so different. Using a Razr Maxx vs using a Thunderbolt both running the same "version" of Android isn't the same at all. It's frustrating. What will bring me back, outside of hardware advances (which every device with every OS will get anyway), will be an end to thse woes.

When I get my new phone I will be selling my Galaxy Nexus and sticking with Android on my tablet, for now. I think that Android has been great and I believe that they have helped to grown the mobile industry, but I fear that all of that freedom has been handled poorly and that they need to tighten their belt a little with carriers and hardware makers.

My wife's Galaxy S3 may have better specs, but it is an awful experience to wade through. It is littered with Verizon branded garbage that is so deeply imbedded that they have put their sub-par options into the Settings menu. I understand branding, but this has reached the height of ridiculousness.

Yea I been on the fence about this too, Grabbing a WP8 and a Surface because like you im tired of carriers being in way or else I may have to buy it outright from Play Store and just use ATT prepaid. I will know after this Android thing on 10.29 but I really want a surface/wp8

You must be talking about the CDMA version. My GSM version easily goes 5-6 hours of screen on time in 18 hours.

and this is one of the reasons I will have to leave the VZW Gnex eventually - the radios and battery life aren't on par with "lesser" phones.

Question, is it that a CDMA radio is more a battery hog than GSM? or does it have to do with it having an LTE/CDMA radio combo, but you can turn the LTE off, so I am wondering are they 2 different radios or am I ust turning off a different frequency? I have noticed slightly better results since I rooted and run the 4.1.2 think I get like an extra 2 hours or so since I last checked

CDMA seems to be a bigger battery hog than GSM. All the GSM guys have reported battery life better than I can get on my CDMA Gnex

It is probably some of both, but the CDMA is definitely using more power. Though it is also worth pointing out that the phones are a bit different internally. The CDMA version is slightly thicker and comes with a larger (and differently shaped) battery.
