Do You Remember This?

Ok, gonna have to shut you all down.:smokingsomb:
Yes, I can actually use one. I'm sure a few, a very few, of you can too.

Raise your hand if you can do simple multiplication and division with a slide rule!

:hello:

I'd have to actually pull it out to try anything to be honest, but pretty sure I remember.

I have this very nice slide rule that I inherited from my father.

Division is absurdly simple,if you understand about the relationship between division and fractions. You just use the C and D scales, arrange it so that you have a numerator on C over a denominator on D, forming a fraction that represents the division that you mean to do. Whatever part of the C scale is over the 1 on the D scale, there's your answer. It's still in the form of a fraction, really.

If, for example, you put 8 on the C scale over 4 on the D scale, then you are creating the fraction 8/4. Looking leftward from there, you'll see other fractions that have the same result

That is the beauty of the slide rule, if not most things: If you know what you're doing, it is quite straight forward.
If you don't, well then...
Pig Latin.
Worked on me when I was a kid.

I think I can put everyone down, with my Suanpan!.. :smokingsomb:

Hand raised!!! I can do that. :D

Re that Suanpan-
I seem to remember a short SF story where the navigation system on a ship crapped out, and a spaceman of oriental descent taught the whole crew how to use those things. I forget how many crew members, but joint calculations from all the crew got the job done.

We used to go and park in the back inbetween two speakers, we would get on the roof of parents van or wagon and one speaker for us and the other for parents inside vehicle, none around that I know of in CT or here in FL.

Intermission was great going for snacks and sometimes the movie would restart before you got back to vehicle.

We still have a couple of drive-ins here. They aren't nearly as popular as they were when I was a kid. Have some great memories of those times. When I was high school one of the drive-ins did a five sci-fi night on the weekend. Normally you had seen all of them except one but what the heck... wasn't there to watch the flicks anyway.

Cool that there are some left in the world. Would be nice if some were still around in my area.

Most of ours turned into shopping malls or centers. Sad change of times. It is the same with most all of our old theaters. One of the finest theaters in the metro center has been restored and now sees use for small venues. It's a beautiful theater that was originally constructed pre movies and the screen was added to the stage area later. The acoustics are outstanding and the decor is late 1800s. It is an experience just to be in the building.

The most majestic theater was just across the street from the survivor. It was indeed replaced by a parking garage. It had such fine marble pillars and granite floors. Though the Orpheum (the survivor) is amazing.... it was second to the Miller Theater until it's death.
"Progress" is such a sad thing sometimes.

Just three things you don't see much anymore and most everyone had.

cant even find an oil can to use that in anymore

they are all plastic or sefety cans now

I remember these as being the most unsafe jacks, had them fall over sideways many times.

I seriously doubt there is an auto out there today that could be lifted by it's bumper. The jerry can was replaced with a much safer container that we all know today. I honestly don't miss the old oil cans and filler spout. I don't know where all the empty plastic bottles go.. but they sure are a lot handier.

We didn't have a phone until I was in 4th or 5th grade, before that we had an intercom between our house and my uncles (1/8th of a mile away) and used Morse code on it.
