How is it? or rather how much can you really say?

"It is big. Screen is bright. Feels solid. Processor is snappy. 4G is fast. External speaker could be a little better. Dual camera LEDs are super bright and make a good flash light. Don't know what else to say. It is a good phone. I still prefer portrait QWERTY devices, though, and probably always will. Typing e-mails and long winded texts on a Pre, Blackberry, or Pixi is 10x faster and simpler than with on screen keyboards. I've also never liked how you had to hide the damn on screen keyboard in Android so much to see something."

Android 2.1 or later? During the keynote they mentioned saving secrets for closer to launch.

"Android 2.1 on it now with tons of HTC crap on top. Unless we push back the release date for some crazy reason, it will probably launch with 2.1 and any further Android updates will be introduced over the air. HTC has included an Over-The-Air update mechanism for 2.1 that should get rid of the upgrade headaches experienced with the Hero."

Camera does nice 8 megapixel macro photos... time to find some flowers with bugs on them.

walked into Radioshack today. Picked up an HD2 and love it!!! I can't wait for Evo.

Sales guy there told me he was sure Evo was coming before summer, since iPhone was likely sommer and Sprint would try to beat it. makes perfect snese. However, just a sales rep speaking his ideas. Nothing factual at all.

So, if you knew iphone 4 was on the way, would you make sure Evo released eirst? I would!

Sooner???! Oh god yes! please sooner!! I'll be in Japan the 1st week of June!!!!! I've been dreaming of being able to document my trip solely with the EVO. Gonna go to the Hiroshima Memorial thingy for the 1st time.

Wow thats awesome. Ive always wanted to go to Japan. Who knows what kind of awesome phones you will see there too! Me too KRD, I'm definitely counting the days with the rest of you. I'm just glad after all the months of speculation and rumors that we know for a fact that it exists and we will have it in the near future. Feel bad for the Incredible folks. Although I did see on phonedog.com's main page that there are supposedly 150k Incredibles sitting in the warehouse waiting to be shipped. Dont know how much credibility there is behind it but whatever. Anyway, I also wanted to say hi to everyone. Im new here but not new to the tech world. Spent alot of time on the crackberry forums as well as Sprint.com where Jackson is coming to you from. You all seem like a good group of people and a few of you from right near me so I look forward to "shooting the sh*t" with all of you. :)

Hi! Mateo, Most of the guys are asleep I think. I lived in Japan for 5 years and never went to any tourist locales. The phones there were killer but now it's the smartphone generation and they're just starting. Japanese luv the Iphone. It's a status thing. hehe.
The 1st few android phones are (except for the G1) starting to trikkle out.

It would make sense for Sprint to release the EVO before the iPhone...either way I know I'll get up way early to pick mine up on it's release day:D

This is the phone I've long been waiting for

Tell me about it! I've been sitting on 2 upgradable phones since December!!!! I think I may be going bald......hahahaha. I think this might be the 1st phone I actually line up early for! Hmmmm, that should be interesting. To see who else shows up. I might know some of em! haha

I have a question,
I read somewhere that Spring rates are really expensive for data/4G.

Someone posted a link, can't recall where, perhaps in this thread, that you need to pay either $59.99 or $69.99 JUST on the data plan to have 4G service?

I mean, this is really expensive.
Right now I have T-Mobile waiting for EVO to arrive and switch to Sprint and my brother in law just switched to Sprint and he was able to sign a 1-year contract, according to him. Don't know if to believe him or not.

I had no idea you could even do that. Do you think EVO will have only a 1-year contract commitment? 2-years?

What about the minute plans?

How much is it?

After all, this is a phone, and you need to pay to get service.

yea i know. its not that big of a deal for me. if its bright and colorful, im happy.

kinda has to do with how we are so nice here..
i was looking at my precentral account and i started 2 threads, only 1 with replies. heres the link

i think theres about 2 nice people, and 1 person trying to actualy help me. the others are calling me an idiot lol. last time i ever posted there.

i love androidforums! :)

to be fair, things were all hugs and kisses over there while we danced around the May Pole waiting for the pre to be released, too.

once the EVO comes out and people start finding things (legit or not) to complain about, others will get defensive. "Troll! Troll!" they'll say.

The plan you're referring to is probably the plan I have right now for my blackberry. It's Sprint's Everything Data Plan which gives you unlimited data and texting plus 450 voice minutes (something I hardly even sniff monthly esp since Sprint's night's and weekends begin at 7PM).

Contractwise, Sprint does offer one year contracts you would just have to pay more out of pocket for your phone.

Have fun on your trip! :D I went to Japan for vacation last year and the year before for 3 weeks. It was a blast! But really be sure you want to do everything with the EVO. First time I went, I just brought my canon P&S camera, second time I brought my new DSLR and 1080p camcorder. Second trip was definitely more memorable picture / video wise. If you do want to do the whole trip with the EVO (if it's out in time!), be sure to take an extra battery or two. I don't know how long the battery will last, but you can be pretty sure that it won't last nearly as long as a regular camera / camcorder battery.

Are you going to be doing lots of travel around the country when you go? Or are you going to stay in one general area? Check out the JR pass (JAPAN RAIL PASS types and prices), it can save you a lot of money if you're traveling between cities and regions. Train tickets can be rather expensive if you are making a long trip.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions...

Last year I met up with some people at an english / japanese language exchange group, and we all went out to an izakaya (bar/restaurant) afterwards. One of the guys there was showing off his phone that could record 720p video. I really wished I could have bought something over there, but they're real restrictive with foreigners buying phones. Even prepaid you have to show them a student / work visa that shows you are going to be staying for 90 days or more. About the only reliable way that I heard about to get a phone over there for a shorter stay is to find someone local over there buy a prepaid phone for you. So if you have a friend or make some friends over there, you might be able to get them to buy one for you (and pay them back!).

I didn't really see many iPhones in use either time I was over there (though I didn't live there like you did! Jealous!)... It seemed like everybody had the giant flip phones like you see in japanese TV shows all the time. I also read before that they weren't fans of the on-screen keyboard for entering kanji, etc. But I could be wrong...

Slight note: Your 450 voice minutes are only for land lines. This plan includes unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling, regardless of the network (Sprint's 'Anymobile, Anytime').

Also, I think the questioner may be confusing phone plans with mobile broadband plans. The phone plan that almost evyerone here will use is that Everything Data 450 for $69.99...that is completely different from the 3G/4G data connection plans. These plans are only for Sprint's mobile broadband devices. Not saying there won't be any additional charges for using the first 4G phone, but it won't be a completely separate service charge.

does sprint do corporate discounts? i know most cell phone companies do, but i've never been with sprint and was curious. and if you do, is there any way i can check online if my city will acknowledge my company, or do i have to just call a local store? thanks!

Yep! I have one through NEC. I think Sprint has a list somewhere on their website for corporations they give discounts to.

Yes, Sprint does corporate discounts.

When I first came to Sprint 10 years ago, I worked for Motorola, and was able to get a 20% discount through them. We had a bunch of iDen phones for our support staff at the time (made by Motorola, of course), so I thought it was because they made phones for Sprint that they could offer the discount. I'm now working for HP and also get a corporate discount here.

It seems most large corporations qualify for some kind of discount. Not sure about smaller companies.

Great info Guys!!

I would love the phone to be released before then! I can totally see it being released the last week of May, that would make sense too.

Any word on the type of the screen tho? this one is really aggrivating me =/

Speaking of the screen, I really can't find any concrete unbiased comparisons on this subject, but what are the pros and cons of TFT LCD and AMOLED?

Amoled does not waste batter and has deeper brighter colors. It is very tough to see in sunlight

LCD can be seen anywhere, adjusted, and is bright, sometimes though the black is not soo black and the viewing angle is very specific

Where do you work? You can call customer service and have them search for a discount, or I can do it through our database.

One thing to note, and this actually might interest everyone, is that Sprint has just changed their Corporate discount policy as of the last week of March.

Any existing customers that already had discounts are not affected, unless they want to switch to a greater discount.

If a customer wants to add a discount to their account, every line on the account that will be discounted (i.e. excludes Simply Everything Plan and Mobile Broadband devices) will have its contract extended for two years. It will NOT affect your upgrade eligibility. Your contract will not be extended if that line is within 90 days of activation/upgrade.

He could be referring to the premier perk which gives you a new phone every year, but that still has you on a 2 year contract.

I mentioned last night in post #1332 that Sprint's "official" specs don't mention the screen type (which I find curious). I mentioned in that post that I had read that even though Samsung developed Super-AMOLED that HTC would be able to use it. I've been hunting for that article, but haven't been able to locate it again (so far).

Most of the recent reports have said the EVO 4G's screen will be TFT LCD, but I'm wondering if this might be one of the surprises Hesse has up his sleeve. Humm... I'm not against the TFT screen at all, but Super-AMOLED sounds awesome.
