Root Making Sure I Have A Backup

I'm sorry that this is such a rudimentary basic question, but I'm reading all of this information on here and am feeling very lost and confused. I have the Evo V and I'm tired of the -120 signal and not receiving calls, so I've been reading up on how to S-off and fix this with the new radio.

My phone is rooted (I used this tutorial), and so I guess that I have TWRP in there somewhere and must have made a backup during the rooting process, but it was a while ago. In all of these tutorials, it is stressed that you should have a full backup in case anything goes wrong.

My question is, how exactly do I do this, and what should I make sure to back up? How do I make sure that literally everything on the phone is backed up, including the stock software, since one of the tutorials said my phone would boot-loop after a particular step, until I flashed my stock software back.

I always hear about Nandroid and ClockworkMod, but I'm confused about which to get, and what to do next. Or if I even need them if I have TWRP? I only ask this after I have googled around, but I feel like it's making me more confused.

Alright. Let's make sure that you have a recovery. Take out the battery in your phone, put it back in and then press POWER, Volume Down at the same time. You you should boot into something called the bootloader. After that highlight RECOVERY. Then press the power button. Let me know what you see.

Hi, and thank you.

I get to a screen that says:

Team Win Recovery Project (twrp) v1.1.1
Based on Android System Recovery <2e>

Battery Level

Main Menu
Please select an option from below:

Install Zip
Nandroid Menu
Wipe Menu
Advanced Menu
Mount Menu
USB Storage Toggle
Reboot system now
Power down system

That is what is called a recovery. It's crucial you understand what a backup is. Basically it is a saved state of your phone. Let's say I'm running Harmonia and I like the way it is. I have installed apps, messages, and everything in that rom is personalized. But one day I decide that I want to experiment a little and want to run Mobster's rom. Just to be SAFE you should make a backup. Lets say I'm not feeling the change or simply want to get back to how things were, you restore a backup. The phone will be in the exact state you left it when you backed it up.

Makes sense?

Yes, I understand what the backup does, I just wasn't sure how to do it and make certain that I had what I needed in case I encounter an error.

So, with the twrp, I don't need anything else in order to create a backup and restore it in case something goes wrong, is that correct?

In order to create a backup, is it under Nandroid Menu > Backup Partitions?

I am then given a list of items to check off, which ones would I need?

[ ] system
[ ] data
[ ] boot
[ ] recovery
[ ] cache
[ ] wimax
[ ] .android_secure sd-ext
[ ] Compress backup

And finally, if this is what I am supposed to do- in case something does go wrong, and I am stuck in a loop or stuck at the logo, what would I do in order to use these files to restore my phone back to working order?

Hold on hold on before making a backup or anything like that I'm going to make you do something else. Follow these steps.

1. Download 'GooManager' from the playstore. Its free.
2. Open it and click 'menu'
3. Click on the option 'install open recovery script'
4. Grant GooManager super user permissions when the dialog box comes out.
5. Wait for a little dialog box that should say 'Recovery installed'.

*************How To Do A Nandroid Backup****************
1. Go into your recovery. (You should have a new recovery)

2. Click on Backup

3. Have these checked.
[x] System
[x] Data
[x] Boot

[x] Wimax
[x] Wimax Settings

4. Swipe to backup rom.

***********************How To Restore A Nandroid Backup*************
1. Click 'Restore'

2. Select a backup to restore

There you have it. Have fun!

I could download and use this for backups instead, then. So if I get stuck in boot-loop, am I still able to get into recovery mode with the power+vol down and then restore from there? Thanks for the help btw.

You don't need the app anymore, but it's recommended you have it no matter what rom you're running to receive updates and such. Good luck!

Alright, one more question if you don't mind. You specified what I should check off when I do a Nandroid backup. Just out of curiosity, what is the recovery and .android_secure for, and why don't we back those up as well?

I would like to know this as well. I would like to create a backup and I'm not either sure about what I should have checked off. Anyone?

The only thing that you gain by unchecking any of the options is space on the sd card. If you have the space just backup everything. I usually have 3 backups, 1 from when I first rooted, the 2nd from before flashing my current rom and then one after I get my current system as I like it. With all of the apps that I have my backups run to be almost 1.5 gigs each.
