Using 4G tether for home Internet?

So comcast just doubled my home Internet price, is there any reason I can't cancel comcast and tether my evo's 4G connection to my PC? I'm broke enough without paying comcast's insane prices.

you could do that but you would have to keep your phone in the plug most of the time as tethering wastes an enormous amount of battery... that would make your electricity bill rocket... also depending on where you live, your connection could be terrible and it might just not be worth it... but you can def tether... virgin mobile asks you to pay a fee but if you root you can tether for free...

Thanks for the info. I'm not too concerned about electricity costs as the charger I use is 5W, about the same energy as running my modem and router. The 4G at my house isn't terrible, even on 3G I get decent speeds. My main worry is VM cutting off my service if they see a spoke in usage, ever heard of this happening?

ive never heard of them completely banning service to people who tether by root but they do have that right... but what they can definitely do is slow down your speeds if you use way too much data... there were times when i was upstate and i had to tether for 12 mabye 15 hours... i have never seen my speeds decrease but virgin mobile can def do that...

Yeah.... Good point, maybe ill just threaten to cancel my cable and see if they lower my cost... If not maybe ill try the tethering route.

Also even if they do catch on the worst they could do is force add the hotspot plan for that month, its only 15$ still cheaper than Comcast :P.

If anyone's interested (probably not :P) I gave Comcast a call and threatened to cancel, they immediately offered to boost up my internet speed to 30MB/s, add a basic cable TV package to my account, and lower the price down to what I originally was paying. I accepted but am still a bit tempted to just tether, I never watch TV and would still be saving a good chunk of change.

Did they tell you how after like 6 months (maybe more if lucky) it will go back up to the actual price for internet + price of cable. But anyways, enjoy your 30 MB/s. I get about 25 MB/s and love it, better than paying the same thing for DSL at a few MB/s.

Ha, yeah they did. I set a calendar event for that date on my phone so I can either A. cancel and tether per my original plan :) or B. threaten to cancel and keep getting the deal

Thanks for the heads up though

No, virgin has banned people in the past for using excessive data.

You are provided service for your mobile phone, by doing this you would screw us all over by getting them to lock down on their throttling policy.

Bad idea.

as long as your not downloading files or watching streaming videos you shouldnt have a problem.

and to the guy who said it would spike the electricity bill, thats not true. the phone would be plugged in when hes at home, and unplugged when hes out of the house, much like it is now before tethering, in fact hed SAVE electricity by not having the router and modem on 24/7

basically if you use the tether STRICTLY for websites and browsing, NO youtube or downloading, you should be alright. web browsing uses very little data compared to streaming.

set the bandwidth limit in your phones settings to virgin mobiles data cap so it warns you when your getting close, then you know to leave it until next month.

as long as your under their cap whats the problem? i know tethering is bad but I've used it as my internet for 6 months before, no problems.

the thing to remember, is when you finally cancel comcast, do NOT change your spending habits.

every month that goes by, take that money and SAVE it. put it away where you cant spend it, in a few months youll have enough to do something really cool.

you already said your broke, save the money that would normally go to comcast and get yourself better internet down the road

LOL, I know people who use 10+ GB a month. One person isn't going to change anything.

i use the 4g hotspot almost everyday, and the speeds are FAST! Thanks to the DEVS for the 4G hack, I can get about 10mb directly to the phone and 1.5 using the hotspot....

i use 10+GB's a month, no issues

ROFL I been using my hotspot for 2 months and use about 50+Gbs like a Mad teen :D Streaming netflex off a ps3 and playing MOH and BF3 takes data. Anyways I been using it cause my dad cancel our Comcast internet due to the jump to $60 for 24mbps down and 4 up. On top of the over price service, our internet would shut off( We're a pretty smart family by that I mean we're all basically PC and network wizards) it was on there end and for them to fix it they charged us, 1 week later it went off again. Guess what it was a cable in our street but for us to get our service back they asked for more money :D how wonderful. Anyways Im waiting for VM to ban me and my 2 years of service with them so I can switch to Tmobile.

Smart thinking!

If you can actually tether through your 4G radio (not just 3G tethering) then GO FOR IT.
How dare comcast try and screw their customers like that. I've been planning on doing the same, but my apt complex comes with free cable wifi...so no need for me.

cable internet is expensive - if you really are broke (like me) then don't waste money on it.
Just my opinion though.

when i had VM, i tethered through root only A LOT. never got caught or warned, nor did i care..

don't let people tell you "no man, don't to it, it'll ruin it for all of us" because it won't.
most rooted users have tethered before, or tether often. adding you to the ballpark won't make a differece.

Yeah, and tell again why Sprint is the only company with unlimited data?

because of their oh so fast 3G :^D

They don't throttle Evo V users. AT least, not me when I had mine.... You can tell by logging into your account, and viewing web use, if it says unlimited data allotment, then you're in the clear, but if not, sorry deary.

4G/3G device fragmentation at its finest. Wish I still had my EVO.

Okay this is totally off topic but if anyone decides to switch internet DO NOT BUY CLEAR or CLEARWIRE!!! It is the worst internet known to man (from my experience). my speed was always less than 200 kbps when my dad's contract was about 1mbps... then we went to Comcast and got the same price for 10 Mbps.

A friend of mine had clear at one point in time, absolutely horrible indeed lol

And this is the exact reason they have caps. People abuse it.

You are paying $35 a month, don't be greedy.

What are you so worried about? There aren't even any advertised caps on the 4G for Virgin. It's not being greedy if the people are paying for it.
