Frankenstorm

Now forecasts like this are easy to understand for a simpleton like me :smokingsomb:

Sadly, the above forecast was extremely accurate.

That it was. So much destruction near me on Long Island. It's brutal. Thankfully, FEMA is providing some assistance to LIPA in order to get power up and running faster than anticipated. Unfortunately, they cut our water supply due to sewage contamination.

No power AND no water? That sucks! We're still existing on the little Honda generator chugging along on the deck. Fortunately, water isn't an issue for us right now. Gas is becoming a big problem, so getting electric back soon would be a huge help. Some neighborhoods around us have been restored, so there is some hope.

My town is very big, and LIPA's been hard at work to get power restored. We have a small section of roughly 8-10 blocks long that have power, which contain a 7-11 and a gas station, but from what I have heard - that gas station is close to selling out their supply.

My family and I headed up to a relative's house Westchester once the roads were open to the public again. There really was no damage done overall outside of some downed trees there (in WC).

Even now, I'm seeing lines for gas stations about 1.5 miles in length. It's pandemonium.

EDIT: Great news. I heard through the grapevine that I just got power back in my house.

We've been trucking supplies up to Brooklyn and trying to get stuff into Long Island. So far getting in isn't the problem, it's getting back out, especially if the drivers don't start out with a full tank. A lot of the power companies were saying they'ed have 80%~90% restored by today. Of course if you're in the unfortunate 10%~20% then that's not much comfort.

Excellent! Any longer and we might have seen live reenactments of a Mad Max movie.

Haven't signed in to the site in a while. Been working super hours. I hope everyone is safe and i feel for everyone affected. I've been watching it on CNN. It's the only english channel i have access to at my current location. I live in Alabama where we lost power for 6 days last year due to all of the tornados on April 27th but what i've seen on CNN is much much worse than what we went through. Anyways i hope things start to look up for you all.

Merrick (Nassau). There's power a little north of me, destruction to the south. Still waiting...

Ahh, not far from me at all. I have a good friend that lives in Merrick, but she lives along Shore Rd where they took some slight whoop ass from the surging water. AFAIK, LIPA is working hard in Merrick.

So far I have heard "by 9:30 tonight", and "on or near November 10th". I like the former and fear the later. Right now, I'm a bit confused by one of my neighbors who seems to be spreading his homes content on his front lawn. Mind you, he didn't take on water. Airing out or showing off? Seems like a lot of work either way.

Sometimes the Power Companies will give overly dire estimates to come off like heros when the power comes back on "early". One of my neighbors called while the power was out and they said they would have a better idea at 3:00 p.m. and they should call back then to check on status. Power came back a little before 2:00.

As far as the neighbor, could "crazy" enter into it?

Moving to day 7 without power. I'm exhausted, I helped empty 3 houses of moldy belongings yesterday. Makes my situation seem a whole lot less dire. Very sad. Although drying, I think the indoor outdoor carpet in my basement may be joining the pile soon. I was able to save it after last year's flood, but couldn't dry it nearly as fast this time with limited generator power. Still a chance its salvageable, but not assured.

I wish I had a servpro franchise right about now. Those guys are everywhere. Six trucks at 4 different residences on one block yesterday. They charged one of my neighbors $1k to pump out his basement. Another neighbor and I didn't rub it in that we would have done it for free if he had only asked. My little emergency pump that I ran via my car with an inverter before I had the generator has now pumped out 2 other basements. Best $50 I ever spent.

And yes. The neighbor in question is a bit shall we say "thinking capacity challenged".

Situations like this make me think that Long Island has turned into the wild west at night, and post-apocalypse by day.

South of me, that's pretty much it. Heard rumors of looting at night because so many homes are abandoned and no power means no alarms. Several reports of generators and gas cans disappearing from decks at night too. Lipa has said they will have 90% of LI power restored by Wednesday BUT 3 different neighbors have >said< they were told we shouldn't expect power till the 10th which for those without a calendar handy is next Saturday. I really hope they are very wrong, but I also suspect they are totally correct. There were Lipa trucks working around here 2 days ago when most of Merrick north of Merrick road was restored, but they appear to be gone now. No one I've talked to has seen a Lipa worker since then.

My buddy who was on gas lines all day yesterday and today informed me of this man who pulled out a gun and threatened the owner of the gas station while police were on-site. What a moron. First of all, you don't do things like that.

Maybe why the National Guard was maintaining order at a local mobile station yesterday?

Very likely. I know that NCPD was stretched out in our area trying to do multiple things, but good grief - I've never seen so many different branches of police-type units in one localized area. I had MP vehicles roaming through town with someone actually manned on the turret. This isn't Iraq lol.

I hope there are no more storms this season. Last winter was pretty light and I guess the weather gods want to make up for that.

I live across from Central Park and there were so many trees down. It looked as though an it was a log mill.

The gas station down the street has had a 3/4 avenue length back up since Nov. 1 or 2.

I sincerely hope those in the Rocaways, Long Island & Staten Island recover and get back to some sort of normalcy soon.

Getting gas has become much more civilized and easy once the began the even/odd refueling rule.
