Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

Thanks for taking the time out of your vacation to update us, Jackson. A couple of days ago, we were speculating about what version Froyo would be and most of us agreed that since it was a major upgrade to the operating system, it would probably be Android 2.5. Android 2.2 just sounds too much like an incremental upgrade and not a major upgrade.

For my home phone service, I only use VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). It's a lot cheaper than regular landlines and it works great. In order to have VoIP, it's necessary to have DSL or Cable, otherwise it doesn't work well.

Google has been working for some time on VoIP for their Google Voice service, then last November, they acquired Gizmo5, a VoIP company. You know they're dying to implement this service on a phone and the EVO 4G seems like the perfect phone for that as long as you're on 4G. No worry, if you don't have WiMAX yet, because the EVO will also work on WiFi. Many people have WiFi routers at home and at work. There's also a lot of WiFi hotspots around. I believe VoIP could take a big chunk out of cell service, but that probably won't happen for awhile. One of the points I'm trying to make is even if you don't have WiMAX in your area yet and many of us don't, it doesn't dampen my enthusiasm for the EVO, nor does it prevent me from using some of the services that require WiMAX since I'm usually around a WiFi signal.

Couldnt agree more. I personally will not have WiMax in my city before 2012, if EVER. I do, however, have a wifi signal at home and at the hospital. This would mean that I am on wifi probably 90% of my day. Still going to get the Evo on day 1. :D

Hey, Jackson, since you're the one that brought up the idea that the iPhone might be coming to Sprint, I'd like to bounce that around a little. Within the past week or two, most reports were saying Verizon was getting the iPhone, but now that idea seems to be dying down. It seems to me that Sprint's WiMAX might be a better marriage, since rumors are indicating the next iPhone will have a font facing camera. Video conferencing will certainly work a lot better on 4G then 3G would.

I personally like the idea of the iPhone coming to Sprint because it will add more credibility to WiMAX. I mean, if it's good enough for Apple, it must be okay.

I'm not trying to put you on the spot, but have you heard anything new about the iPhone coming to Sprint?

Well i have heard Rumors that there will be two versions of the iphone. One for other carreirs called the iPhone HD, and one for sprint dubbed the iPhone 4G. It would make sense to me and the relationship between both companies is very very good. There would be absolutely no prupose for a front facing cam on a 3G network because there is no oppotunity for video chatting on 3G. You would have to be connected to wifi.

So yess i have heard apple is trying to do what google did and spread their OS to all major carriers, as we have seen more and more that cellphone exclusitivity has gone out the window except with few phones like the droid and Evo. I will keep you all posted but it could indeed be a reality folks

Jackson

here are some sites backing up these claims ive given

Verizon Release Date 2010 CDMA Verizon iPhone September 2010 | CNM News Network

Sprint/Verizon iPhone 4G Won't Multitask Like AT&T

to the second link, if sprint does realease the iphone it will be 4G and tehrefor multitasking will be able, unlike verizons version

also here is a quote right from sprint's HTC Evo dev guide suggesting android 2.5 on the Evo: "The Android

There will be an extra charge to use it as a wifi hotspot. This makes sense though because if u live in an area of 4G it is likely that you will be using this phone as your router for your computer, laptop etc. i know i will!!!
But wait, didn't Verizon just say that their wifi tethering will now be free on the palm pre and pixi?
Verizon Mobile Hotspot on webOS devices now free, Pre Plus and Pixi Plus fall to $49.99 and $29.99 -- Engadget

I surely thought that was going to be a preemptive strike against free wifi tethering on the EVO?

so basically, 2.5 is inevitable at release?
I don't know that we can say "inevitable at release", because we have no idea if Froyo is ready yet. Still, it seems like something other than Android 2.1 is necessary to enable 4G, so you can't count it out, either. How's that for double talk?

Any mention if the EVO will come with a HDMI mini cable with the phone?
Yeah, I figured it out, but I still don't know what it means...

On the HDMI cable part, Sprint said it won't be included and I can't blame them for that. Have you ever priced HDMI cables?

I had the Nexus One for T-Mobile (unsubsidized) It was a pretty decent phone. It did have its issues but I have really grown to love Android. I bought the HD2 when it came to T-mobile just to check out sense on a Winmo phone and that HUGE SCREEN. As far as the HD2 goes I will say meh. It is buggy freezes up once a day and so fourth. Now to the bright side!!!! I just got the unlock code from T-Mo and as soon as the Evo 4G is released (or a few days before) my mint HD2 that is UNLOCKED will be on eBay! Hurry up Evo...we need you.

We are talking crazy numbers for RAM/ROM (FACT),
It should come with that cable unlike the ipad cough cough
So you are saying we should have more RAM/ROM than 512MB/1GB?
Also what cable are you referring too?

Well, that's a lot less than I thought they would be. Thanks.

Not to get off topic but cables are cheap and Monoprice is an amazing site. Don't get lured into the price of expensive Monster Cables and whatnot from Best Buy. Being digital cables they all work the same, they either work or they don't. Unless you are doing like 20ft+ runs would you even have to think about cable quality.
But I don't really mind they don't include a cable, while it sure as hell would be nice I'll just pick one up from Monoprice.

Also I really hope the HTC EVO ships with a 16GB card, I feel like with such a high res screen, HD video recording and whatnot an 8GB card is a waste. The Droid even has a 16GB card. My 8GB iPhone is filled up, I would hate to have an 8GB card that has to be replaced on day one, at least with a 16GB I know I could last on that for awhile until 32GB cards dropped in price.

I agree with everything you're saying about the cables and the memory cards. The last time I looked the 32GB cards were $200 and that is a bit much.

I was just looking at prices on these the other day in anticipation for the EVO (assuming they won't be including one in the box.) Very excited to shoot some 720p video and watch it on my HDTV!

Monoprice cables are excellent, quality products. CNET and many other professional A/V reviewers use them in their test labs. They are just as good (if not better) than most of the delusionally overpriced dreck that brands like Monster puts out there. Amazon.com also has cheap cables from brands like Eforcity (which most of my cables are) and Mediabridge, which work equally well.

And in regards to specs, the HDMI cables from all three brands I mentioned are 1.3 approved.

Hey Jackson, What would your guess as far as a cost for the mobile hotspot app? I find it surprising that Sprint would charge for the access to using it as Verizon just dumped the cost for Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus current and future owners.
