Gps issue

Lurker
Is it just me or does anyone else with a custom jb rom having a gps problem. I have tried joyride and miui v4, everything works except my gps. When i go to navigation all i get is "searching for gps" yet it never gets furthur than that. If anyone has a fix or have the same issue please please let me know because i want some jb(thanks to all the devs). I recently switched back to stock because gps works flawlessly

I have had the same thing. I have tried several roms and the gps is like 180* off. I did find one that it works on is the Return of the the living rom. I have read that is something to do with the Prl getting a fix on the location. I really don't know about that, but it works. It seems like if the rom has Prl settings it has a better chance of working correctly. Just my thoughts. Hope this helps.

QBKING77 has a fix on youtube. But some new roms have bugs, if the one your on has a bad gps bug you may not be able to fix it. Im sure the devs will get it fixed. Also kernel and modem may play a role, try out different modems and kernels for you rom.

Go to System settings > Location access. In there select GPS source and make sure Use internal GPS in checked. Then turn off Access to my location and turn it back on. See if that fixes it but give it some time.

Your location is off because the phone is using Wifi and mobile network location instead of GPS.

Ok heres what i did. You need to be on stock with gps on and locked before you boot to recovery to flash. Since i already setup my rom, I performed backup, flashed stock, got lock, rebooted to recovery, flashed custom jb rom, reboot recovery, now restore backup image of jb rom. boot and enjoy.

If someone helps hit their thanks button.

Ok I did!!!! lol.

Also one thing worth noticing on AOKP there is a bug where Governor and I/O scheduler reset on reboot. If you want your personal settings to stick you can set them with an app like SET CPU or RomToolBox.

Theres a jellybean GPS and battery tweak for all the aosp builds, incl cm10 and aokp at XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975379&page=2 hope this helps

Well I'm not sure which one to d/l or do I grab both?

They have 2, Gyroscope & Sensor Fix and Mod/Tweak & Fix.

So which one is for the GPS, and which one is for the Battery?

My GPS right now is kinda iffy, sometimes it works good, other times it take forever to lock on.
As for the battery life, eh, I dunno, I'm not having a really drastic problem with battery life. With moderate usage I can stretch a good 10 hrs or better, with heavy I can get about 6-8, of coarse it depends on what you do as to how much it drains, so usage will vary.

I'd love the GPS part to work faster though as I transport cars locally where I live so GPS is very handy in my line of work, so I'll wait for a reply before I do the gps fix, since I'm not sure which one is for gps to begin with.

I noticed to that it says "THIS IS ONLY FOR CM10, KING KING, AOKP, PARANOID ANDROID & CODENAMED ANDROID. DO NOT USE THIS ON MIUI."

I am using AOSP build6. Since AOSP and AOKP are both different, and it doesn't specify AOSP in that message/warning, is it still ok to use on AOSP or is it simply saying it's not safe to use on MIUI?

Since I am on build6, are these tweaks included in the newest build already?, it'd be kinda redundant to just put somthing over the top of whats already there :).

I flashed both ok, rebooted and got into the phone.
GPS still doesn't lock to well, so it's a flop for me. It's not finding anything and sits and blinks for at least 5 mins and still no gps. Even the ticking the location stuff in settings off and back on a few times didn't help at all.
I have really bad 3g like 2 bars max, that's because of were I live though and I'm also inside, so that may be the issue, but stock doesn't take that long.
This is not a good things for me, as I use gps in my business, so I may be going back to stock sadly :(. I really do like the roms but if gps is not functioning correctly I have no choice.

Did you try going back to a el26 kernel n rom, getting gps lock, rebooting into recovery then flashing the JB rom. Thats another way that helps. The Gyro n sensor would be for GPS.

No. I was sifting thru xda forums thread, and a few tried that option as well with no resolve. There have been numerous trials and errors and some it resolves while others still have the issue.

I will test some more today, but so far I've had no resolve.

I did finally get a lock after unticking in settings. I am all over my area, so I will test it out more today, but I'mI'm open for suggestions. Until then I'll keep testing.

Update:
So far it works good now. I'm about 30 miles away at work and it locked within like 2 second. I'm going to keep testing things out such as turning the phone off, more areas around the city.

Update 2:
Reboot unfortunatly resets it. On a plus side it seems that using ticking off and on in setttings combined with thw zip fix, it works fine.

40 miles away from where I was before, me doing that combo works within like 2 seconds. I guess I can live with that.

Good for you my fren. Im not on a JB rom, but came across the tweak at XDA. I know a lot of you are running the JB roms and are having GPS probs, so I thought I would post it for ya. Feels good to get a lock huh? I got 99 problems but a GPS lock aint one

Well final thoughts on the gps. After reboot it seems I have to go into settings to location unchecked it and enable it's again. Once this is done after a reboot/restart it works like a dream. Minor hangup I guess. It would seem that the fixes work just not as well as I would like is all. Battery is noticably better, just not a drastic difference but a difference none the less and GPS once the settings fix is applied, it does lock on very fast.

On another note, I had another screen lockup today. It's like the phone gets stuck in sleep mode or something. Only way out of it is hold power until reboot, or battery pull.

YEA, thats a nasty lil bug. Good thing is the stock JB will b out soon and the devs will most certainly get it rooted. All will b Ok, until the next OS leaks. Then we'll all wash n repeat

Ive read the EPIC 4G TOUCH will be getting JB in december. Havent read if Boost mobile is are isnt, just that E4GT is.

That would be a good thing as it should have an updated kernel etc to solve some of the slow 4g issues I had read about on the JB that are already out.

I think I found the culprit for the gps issue.

I have been messing with gapps and making my own installs via a zip recovery, which I have FINALLY found after about 8 hrs of exhausting testing and re-testing. I've installed and re-installed a rom and gapps, and the gapps I made of my own so many times I'm surprised my phone hasn't exploded :).

Here is what I found and I can finally replicate this each time, this is what makes me think it's something in the gapps files, the google.xxx files. Since I'm not a programmer of any kind just a simple IT type person, from my knowledge I would assume that the networklocation file is causing the issue, but I could be totally off base and this file is simply for 3g location stuff and not gps, I'm not sure.

I have modified the gapps folder and taken out (for my personal preference) som apk files.
The files I have taken out are as follows:
ThinkFree
Talkback
Talk
Microbes
ChromeBookmarksSynceAdapter

The rest of the files I left alone as is.
I remade a zip called it MyGapps.zip and put it on my phone.
I cleared Dalvik and cahce partition
I have done both ways, format data, and the above 2 only, and both ways I get the same results.

I am useing the milestone1 aokp rom.

On to my findings.
When I install the rom, and install google maps to test gps, it works like a dream, no lag time in locking, and locks within 2-5 seconds, it also finds my location very close, withing 8 meters it says, but it pinpoints where I am quite nicely.
Now, when I install gapps, be it my_gapps that I made or the default gapps I downloaded online (gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip), I clear dalvik again, clear cache partiotion, and again I have tested both ways of a format and not formatting, and came up with the same results. I get 2 kind of reactions:
1: the gps takes forever to lock on and may or may not lock on
2: the gps "says" it locks on, but it shows me like anywhere from 10-20 miles away from where I am at, and the gps lock is solid, not bliinking, and I get no message about "cannot locate" or "waiting for location".

I can replicate this same affect each and everytime I go thru the steps I mentioned.

I have also tried it with the tweaks/fixs that are for download on xda forums as well, the gps fix didn't resolve anything after I applied it via a zip in recovery.

ALL this being said, I am thinking that the gapps files, (not sure which one) but they are causing the gps issue that people are having perhaps.

Can anyone that's more knowledgeable about this either fill me in more or confirm/deny this, and please correct me if I am mistaken about the files, just from common deduction of my IT type background, it seems to result in gapps being the culprit.

Gapps contains Google Maps so you may be on to something. If you dont get a response, post your findings on XDA. Thats where the DEVs and Magicians hang. Good work, Im very appreciative of anything and anyone that helps the community.

I'm on another project, and kinda came to a standstill.

This google stuff is really picky, so that's why they made the gapps package.

I am trying to get gmail installed on this aokp rom that I have, and it just does NOT want to install and work. It installs fine, but when I go to open it, it just closes right back down immediately. So I'm trying to figure out what files in the gapps allow this.
Doing a LOT of clear cache, and format data and reboot and such, hope my phone doesn't ike crap on me, because I am giving it a major workout right now.

Wish I knew more about this stuff, I just can't seem to grasp a lot of it :(.

I do have one issue and I can't figure out what causes it either, I can't create an account. May be something I removed from the rom, just not sure what links to it.

Of the apps that are google that I prefer to have install are YouTube and gmail and I just cannot get them to work after install, they both do the same thing.....even after a re-install. Very annoying.

Gapps has some other folders and files within it, and I have no clue what they do or how to adjust them, so I don't know what I'm gona do. The gps lock on is annoying, but installing the oogle stuff isn't working either. RAWR very annoying.....ok I feel better, a lil, sorta :)

Update: I was correct it was the email app, I got rid of it. Man that sucker seems to be attached to everything under the sun. On the warp it's connected to the camera LOL, so weird.

Until I can get somone else to respond, I'm at a stand still. I'm about ready for stock at this point, as much as I do love the roms, the GPS issue is just to annoying for me.

Update:
Well I have tested for about 12+ hrs so far, and come to the same results.
For now until this is fixed I am going back to stock. Quite a big let down really, as I want to use roms, but not at the loss of gps functionality :(.
Sure wish I could get a dev to work on this and find a fix. I'de be a tester for sure, but I guess I'll have to suffer with stock and waiting for now (sigh)
