Root Rooting ZVF?

Has anybody had any experience with rooting the ZVF firmware? A user on Android Central claimed to resolve his data issues (MMS and data worked) by using the ZVF firmware on his VM Elite. When I tried this, I got the firmware installed fine using the unbrick guide but I couldn't find a way to root it so I could install a VM ROM. I'm back on ZV5 now but I'm just curious if anyone was able to root this.

You can root it with Poot just fine. You shouldnt have Sprints ZVF firmware on the VM elite. That's gonna screw with things. The data and mms problems were because of custom roms having giantpunes kernel made for VM phones. Sprint had different wifi drivers and a few other things. In the Kernel thread tho there is a kernel made for sprint phones now tho so you'd just flash that and you wouldn't have any issues.

When you put the sprint rom on your VM phone, what does it show for your Data Profile settings when you dial ##data#
(say view when it asks)
does it have A000xxxxxxxxx@mdata.vmobl.com
for MMSC does it have http://mmsc.vmobl.com:8088/mms

Then dial ##786#
and go to view, what does it say for radio version?
Mine says M7630AABBQMAZM4.1.4005 (this is the VM696ZV5 version)

If it does then the ROM isn't destructive to the VM settings and thats awesome I might try it see if it fixes the 2G/3G toggling issue here: http://androidforums.com/lg-optimus-elite/649000-mobile-data-troubleshooting-steps.html#post5209793

And if it fixes that toggling that means it probably updated the radio firmware to a better version than virgin has available. The trick is then to get the radio updated and then try and go back to the virgin rom to get back to their splashscreen/etc, does yours say "sprint" when it boots up? In the end I want to have CM9 and a good radio firmware.

I was the one the flashed zvf to my vm and havnt had a problem with it. It rooted fine, and has been running great

I was attempting to use the ZVF firmware to fix the 3G/1X toggling. Were you having problems like that? Last weekend when I tried rooting it with poot and the click rooting program but it just didn't want to root. I'll probably try again this weekend. It's just a pain to get it "back to the way I had it" without a wifi connection.

make sure superuser is installed before rooting

Mine is having a different effect. It says "sprint" and all that now on the phone but data doesn't work (error 67). Had to enter in my phone number manually too using ##847446#

Calling worked.

I'll try a real ROM on top of it now since the modem is updated.

update:
bummer, cant root the latest sprint with poot or even the one click root method. Anybody had luck?

I've done the poot before but it wont work on ZVF.
Definitely recommend avoid doing sprint on the virgin phone after this trial, had to do the ##786# MSL reset and re-activate after putting the VM rom back on to get rid of error 67.

You guys have to have Superuser installed to finalize being rooted. After installing Superuser, go to the app, scroll to the left, and find the binary updater and click on it, then hit update binary or w/e it shows lol.

I've done it before, it just doesn't work on this rom. Unless your saying on this rom you have to first install super user for it to even poot, but thats not mentioned in the instructions. Can you even install super user if your not rooted? Thats definitely not what it needed last time with ZV4. It says "oops" or something and restart try again. Did that several times.

I went back to the VM rom, it updated to ZV5 right away, then installed poot and that other apk, then rooted with no complications with poot.

If you are installing a custom ROM, there is no need to poot/root again. All of the ROMs available aside from stock (via factory reset) come with superuser as well as the superuser binary. Trying to root again will likely cause the rooting failures you're having, provided this is what you are doing. You will keep root if you install a custom ROM.

Also yes, you can install superuser even if you're not rooted, but you'll gain no benefit by doing so as it will be rendered useless.

I'm trying to get to the sprint rom, to get the updated radio firmware, then go to a custom rom, so that data works, but to make that last move requires root :) poot didn't work on a freshly installed ZVF for me. Poot did work when i went back to VM rom.

Based on what happened after the sprint rom update i have a feeling it just blows away your data anyway and a custom rom wont work because I had to use the virgin rom and do the MSL reset. I think I'll just ask for the HTC when I talk to my escalation lady (FCC complaint) tomorrow. This phone is just destined to be a pile in various cities. I've been troubleshooting with them over a month and the gremlins in virgin engineering must have an "easy button" that does nothing it seems they just say "we fixed it, try again".

then you say 2g/3g still toggles, and they say ok i'll send back to engineering, 48-72 hour wait.
repeat.

It sounds like you're mixing firmware updates. From what I know of firmware, which isn't much, that's a very bad idea. ZV4 to ZV5 includes an updated radio, and that's Virgin Mobile. ZVF is Sprint firmware. If I'm right, then using Sprint firmware with Virgin Mobile service, and vice versa, is unstable ground and will likely spell out failure. Try a custom ROM from ZV5, and see what happens.
