Help Kies for Mac issues

MagicGuy

Newbie
Hey gang, Android Noob here..

I'm excited to grab the jellybean update for my galaxy s3 (AT&t), but my Kies software can't seem to update itself. I use a mac with mountain lion (10.8.2)

Upon starting the software I am notified of an update. When I click download, it looks as though it is working; the progress bar finishes and then nothing happens. I restart the application and get the same "update is available" message. I have tried completely uninstalling the software and downloading it again from Samsung, but I get the same message each time. The software works fine with my phone otherwise, but I can't update to JB until the software is updated, so it's a bit of a catch 22. Has anyone else had this problem or been able to resolve it? Or is there a relatively easy way to install the update yourself from a download? I have not rooted my device and don't wish to at this point.

Thanks!

Hi MagicGuy :wavey: Welcome to the forums!

Kies can be very tempermental. I don't know why it wouldn't update itself. I know nothing about using it on a Mac. Its possible they are getting slammed due to the JB update just coming out.

I know I can use Odin to install stock firmware on my Galaxy S2. You don't need to be rooted. However, I don't know if it may be the same procedure for your phone. I'll move this to the Galaxy S3 forum and hopefully you can get more help. I'll also leave a redirect in the Samsung forum for members there to see.

Yes Kies itself is trying to update. Thanks for the tip but I unfortunately already tried without the phone plugged in. The software is misbehaving somehow

Atmazz do you have a link to Odin? The only one I see that seems correct said the device must be rooted to use it.

Well actually, it looks like Odin is for Windows only. It looks like if you're using a Mac you need to use Heimdall. There is a link for it in that thread but I have zero experience with it.

After a frustrating evening and morning I've decided to try to get a friend's PC to use. I'm not sure why the Kies update won't complete, but I can only attempt it so many times without want to lob the machine out an open window...if anyone else has success at overcoming this issue I'd love to hear from you!

Having the same problems. I download the Kies program from Samsung's site and get the old version from their link. When I install and try to open it, I get the alert that it needs to update. I hit "ok" and then nothing happens. I know there is a newer version out there that will allow my Mac running Mountain Lion to download JB, but I can't get my version to update to it. Anyone with a link to the new version? Maybe an "ah-HA!" solution that I'm missing?

Mark! Sorry you're having the same trouble but at least I'm not the only one! It seems like a direct link to the newest version would solve the problem. Are you getting a download progress bar that completes and then nothing happens? I'll work on this some more this evening and post if I make any progress...

I found this link:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4163556?start=0&tstart=0

One of the posts suggests unchecking the "notify me of updates" and that helped the person. I'm not at home to try this, but give it a whirl and see how it goes.

That allows Kies to open and sync with the phone, but does not allow it to update.

And no, I do not even get a progress bar for the update. I get the alert window asking if I want to update to the latest version and when I click "yes" the box goes away and nothing happens. When I go to preferences and check the UPDATE tab, it says there is a new version and when I click the box "Update", nothing happens. I've uninstalled and reinstalled a bunch of times and nothing.

Yes, a direct link to the latest version would be ideal at this point.

Ok, so I am now running Jelly Bean. How did I do it? I tried it from home! Turns out the internet here at the office had some permissions blocked and that stopped the Keis update from happening. On a whim I tried it when I got home yesterday. BOOM. Jelly Bean.

So permissions might be to blame? Maybe I should try to bring my computer to another network? I run the WiFi for my house and I don't think there's anything that would be blocking the update...but it could be worth a shot. My fall back plan is I'm having my boyfriend bring his pc laptop over. Which makes me a little sad, but there it is.

Actually I figured out the culprit. I am using Os x 10.8.2 and Kies is only officially supported through 10.7. I finally got through to customer service and they told me : use a different computer. Womp Womp.

I'm running 10.8.2 here. Worked fine. For me, it really was just as simple as changing the location and going to a different WiFi network.

Good luck!

I had the same problem. It would download and get to about 70% and them tell me there was an issue with the download. I eventually gave up and just updated to Jellybean directly from my phone connected to WiFI thru settings >> About Device >> Software Update

Mark, I'm extremely jealous!

Alli, from what I've read, AT&T is not doing an OTA rollout of JB at all, which is a bummer because that of course would be easiest.

I won't pretend I never had any hiccups upgrading iOS over the years, but this has been especially frustrating. Oh well. Hopefully I'll have it solved tonight.

I had repeated issues with running updates on my iphone. It always seemed to be a time of day issue.....so I attempted the samsung update at different times with no difference. :(

Sorry about the AT&T I'm in Canada and through Rogers

I did finally get the update through my friend's laptop. I can't say I feel all the fuss was worth it because I encountered all sorts of new annoying little problems since the update. Random processes inexplicably gobbling up large amounts of battery power, etc...
