JB modem on ICS firmware

Hello. Can I flash the modem from the leaked JB on a (stock, rooted) ICS 4.0.4 firmware ?
Thank you.

PS: What I mean is: I know I can flash it but will it work? Is there a chance of bricking my phone by doing that?

Note that many of the modem installers won't install on the JB leak due to incompatible update-binary. Try it first, you may be ok.

if it doesnt work you will need to extract the modem.bin file, and install this specifically in PhilZ recovery

Thank you. Before flashing that modem,I would like to tell you my "problem". I live in Romania and I have a Orange branded and ex-sim locked SGS2 (I unlocked it with GalaxySimUnlock).
It came with ICS 4.0.4 and I rooted it with CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LQ5-v5.6-CWM5 and the baseband was LQ6. The download speeds on this configuration (on data network,HSPAP) is around 4-5 Mbs (max 6).

I installed CM10 and the download speeds jumped up to around 8-9 Mbs. I had the same results with the leaked JB firmware. All the test were done at around 2-3 am ,in the same location.

Now I am back on stock ICS 4.0.4 rooted with CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LQ5-v5.6-CWM5 and I would like to bump up my data speed.I tried different ICS modems with no success (still around 4-5 Mbs).

What confused me is the first part of this post : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11243433&postcount=8 . It says : " The kernel... It's the core/kernel of an operating system. It's main functions (as stated above) are to interact with the hardware a.k.a. Device Drivers, to manage resources (things like memory management and processor time sharing a.k.a. multi-tasking), service interrupt requests, network services and the like"

Should I understand from this that the kernel is (together with the modem ?) in charge of the data speed? If so,my problem is not the modem but the kernel.
Can you clarify this up for me ?

That xda thread is about ROM's and kernels and not modems. The signal reception is handled by the modem and the kernel just decides what resources to devote to network services.

OK,so,in theory,if I've got 8-9 Mbs download speeds on JB leaked firmware, that means with the modem from JB on ICS 4.0.4 I should have the same speeds. Correct ?

If you are using the leaked Samsung Jelly Bean firmware then you are already using the Jelly Bean modem, Baseband version I9100XXLS6.

I do not use anymore the JB leaksd version,I am on stock ICS 4.0.4 . Anyway,I just flashed with Odin the JB modem (XXLS6) and I am waiting for tonight to do a speed test, so I can compare with the previous speeds I've got.

I already did a speed test and it seems a little better than before, but it's the middle of the day here and the network might be full (that is why I usually do the speedtests at night, when this possibility is greatly reduced)

I misunderstood. If you have no luck with the JB modem, you might like to try the BVLP7, Orange network, modem which has proved to be a very good all round modem for most users. I am afraid that it really is a case of trial and error until you find the best modem for your location and network.

I already tried BVLP7 with no luck.

I think that is more to it than the modem even if I've red the theory that says the data speeds are related only to modem. If this is indeed true, tonight I should get 8-9 Mbs download speed as I've got on leaked JB , because I am using now the same modem. But I have a feeling that is not going to happen.

LE: I will never have the chance to test my theory because I think my IMEI was just messed up. I was on Tapatalk when the phone freezed and when it came back I had no network and no way to go in Settings / Mobile Networks . I flashed another modem (BVLPE-the one that is stock on my firmware) and did an EFS restore and it works again.
But it seems that my phone doesn't like this modem (XXLS6) ,so I'll stop experimenting for now ,before I'll do something to it that i can't repair.

Mihai, why don't you flash the leaked JB from sammobile if you wanna have the stock OS. And you can root it at any time by following PhilZ instructions on XDA. Easier than trying to pair OS with different modems.

I used the JB leaked firmware for about 3 days and reverted back to ICS due to a few very annoying things : lock screen and WiFi issue, battery and a few minor ones. Plus that it wasn't as smooth as CM10.

I was trying to get the best of the 2 :stability and battery from stock ICS and data speeds from JB (or CM10). But, as I said, I think that is more to it than just the modem.
