Well, that is the theory.
We assume a school filled with gun toting protectors would stop such things. If it did, good. But do we know? Evidence suggest that if a bad guy knows you are armed, he might move on to someone else.
Can a parent "kill" a child? Is there something about kids that would cause a moment of doubt? Drawing and firing on a child is different than drawing and firing on someone that looks like a bad person.
Not sure local laws allow armed people on school grounds. Not sure if those carrying will actually shoot. Perhaps several people start shooting and an innocent is caught in the crossfire. Perhaps a teacher leaves his gun lying about and some kid near the edge of the mental precipice decides "here is my chance."
If teachers are armed, I KNOW there will be a moment of forgetfulness and something bad will happen. This is a simple fact. We let everyone carry and eventually there will be a problem. And I am ABSOLUTELY NOT saying no more guns or concealed carry permits. I will go so far as to suggest we need to eliminate most gun laws and introduce instant checks and let the 7-11 sell ammo along with bad coffee and stale donuts.
I just know more guns increases potential for problems. Look at how many people are killed with "unloaded" weapons in this country.
I am a tough guy. Very little scares me. About all that DOES scare me is when grandma gets upset and gets out her wooden spoon. Worse than any gun, that spoon wielding granny. And the IRS.
I think I know what I might do if armed and something like that happened. Would I shoot? Am I capable of shooting? Easy to say yes, but I have never been in that situation; I've never pulled a gun except on rabbits and deer that I know for a fact they would kill me if given half a chance, so it is better them than Bob.
I have never faced the fact that either me or he will die today. Untill you do face problems and you draw, you are lying if you say you know what you will do. Not you personally, Jeff, but most people just do not know.
Not sure what a bunch of people carrying guns would have accomplished in that sad room filled with kids. Or perhaps arming teachers is a good idea and I am filled with beans.
I think this event will repeat again and again. We will be asking what happend and why it happened decades from now. Only one proposal will help and that is making guns illegal and making manufacturing any ammo illegal. Take all guns away.
And when we do, people will still get guns and kids will still die and we will still be asking why.
