Just flashed official 4.1.2 and device now really slow

flashed the official british firmware and my S3 is sluggish

slow at opening apps and the android keyboard has stopped working (gesture one)

i didn't do any wipes as its a stock ROM

restoring my 4.1.1 nandroid now

any clues as to why the 4.1.2 update went wrong?

Even going from stock firmware to stock firmware I'd do a wipe. It's most likely that it's remnants of the 4.1.1 interfering with 4.1.2

Custom ROMs work better than official ones because the Devs fix the things that Samsung don't :).

You can choose whether to update the kernel or Radio.

If you have the stock kernel currently, I'd recommend using the kernel included in Wanam (Update kernel option) but custom kernels are my favourite

Like the siyah kernel

Might flash custom over Christmas

Is the option to update the kernel included in the rom

Is the option to update the kernel included in the rom

No, its part of the installer. When you flash the ROM, the installer gives you a load of selection boxes (not chocolates) that you select or deselect.... Things like Samsung Apps, update Kernel, S Voice, blah blah

that's excellent. is the kernel included decent enough?

you're always really helpful

Erm... its better than stock. For me, I like to undervolt so for those who.like to tweak, they may want something more but sure, it'll certainly work well.

Quadrant at stock (1.4ghz)
