UK N4 stock - thoughts/rumours

Hi all

I am currently rocking a plain old HTC Desire, which frankly I have loved. But it is time to move on, and the N4 is definitely the target. You guys are clearly fans!

However, having looked at the Google Play store about 10 times a day, the "Sold Out" message is starting to get on my nerves. Do yout think there is any hope of getting a
 
You and the rest of us are waiting. I heard a rumour that it would be February at the earliest for play stock. Im tempted to go carphone warehouse but i dont want to pay
 
Ditto, all of the above.

Sorry, I don't have anything productive to add other than that I find the complete lack of transparency to be highly irritating. I don't doubt there are honest reasons for it, but would it hurt to release a statement just explaining what's what for now? I know there was some statement made by a Google bigwig several weeks ago but, from what I could tell, that was purely an apology with little or no indication of what they're doing to rectify the situation.

Basically LG got caught with their pants down (you can tell they have no experience dealing with devices in heavy demand)

Needless to say Google is not pleased.

I work in an office pretty much chained to my desk - and I have an unhealthy obsession with pressing refresh on the Google Play website, or Google Nexus Devices World Availability Checker

So if I see the phone available, I'll order one and be straight on here to let people know (in that order :D )

The Nexus line has never reached extremely high sales... Who's to say that Google's projection to LG wasn't way under?

If you have further information it would be interesting to read it. It certainly read like you wrote the above with some authority...

A Google executive last month blamed LG for the frequent out of stock status of Nexus 4.

"Supplies from the manufacturer are scarce and erratic, and our communication has been flawed. I can offer an unreserved apology for our service and communication failures in this process," Google managing director Dan Cobley posted on his Google+ account.
 
I have mine but am constantly checking for my father-in-law (it's a Christmas present from the mother-in-law :D). Best option I've seen yet is at CeX stores, 8GB will rush you
 
I think what really annoys me is that I'm not one of these "must have it now" people. I don't want it now, but I do want to know when I can have it....without having to go through a pure luck process of seeing it available in the 24 hour window (as T147 said). Sorely tempted to go for a nearly new second hand HTC One X I've seen for about
 
I came from a Desire and thought I'd always stick to HTC but after I rooted my Desire I never really wanted to get Sense back on my phone! Can't believe you're still on 2.2 and unrooted with a Desire, the lack of space must be stifling!
 
It is! However, although I am reasonably tech-savvy I've always shyed away from rooting/flashing ROM's. I've probably only got about 4 apps, had to uninstall Facebook in the end :)

I'm deliberately holding myself back so my next phone looks super-awesome ;)
 
Trust me you'll never look back, rooting my Desire was the best thing I've ever done with phone, learned so much about Android and phones in the process. Clearing the caches helps a little.

It will look super awesome anyway because even though I had ICS running on my Desire to get a phone that can truly handle it is super awesome and that phone is the Nexus 4!
 
I might have a spare one soon if they don't refund my original one. I rooted it and so they might not refund me for the faulty mic. If they don't I'll just pay to have it fixed and then sell it on.
 
I heard a rumour that LG are supplying chains directly that are selling the nexus at a higher price before they send any to Google (I presume car phone warehouse is one of them?). Now I don't presume this is true as I would think Google would have tied up the contract better than that?

Also the nexus 10 32 GB is never in stock in the uk also and that's built by a different company so that add weight to the above being a false rumour.....

Still, its a bit silly this whole thing, how they can hold their heads up is beyond me, I really think they will just drop the nexus 4 now and start again with the next model sooner in the year than they planned. Or there is a problem with the nexus 4 they are keeping secret until its fixed to avoid embarrassment? Now there is a rumour! ;)

Now I love a good rumour me! It really does make you wonder how come Carphone Warehouse and O2 in Portsmouth both have them in stock at
 
I came from an original HTC Desire, too. Really loved that phone, though sure, 500MB of RAM was never going to be anywhere near enough.

The jump to the N4 is awesome .. but then I guess you are going from v1 to v4, effectively ..

As for continually checking Play: don't bother. There is a notification option which I signed up for: do that. Sure enough, about an hour before the second lot of stock came available on Play I got an e-mail from Google and I was able to be ready and waiting immediately the Sold Out notice disappeared.

Actually, I'd read that the original stock was made available 15 minutes before the time announced, so I started checking 20 mins early. The stock didn't become available for about 5 or 10 (very tense) minutes after the time announced and it then took me several attempts to get the ordering process to work.

Got there in the end, though and I have to say I'm blown away by the N4. I love the speed (didn't even realise my Desire was that slow!), 4.1.2 is really good and I'm happy with the things most reviews complain about, namely the camera (best I've had on a phone) and battery life (got 28:30 hrs with 4:22 hrs of screen time plus hours of listening to podcasts and playing games over the w/end).

There are some things I miss from Sense - the music player and I kinda liked the clock / weather widget - but there's nothing that would make me want to go back.

Plenty of options on the clocks. I recommend HD Widgets which has a skin very similar to the Sense clock. The 3D animations may be missing but the look is there.

I'm sure you will be able to find a music player on the market to your liking too.
 
I may look into the HD widget thng, though I'm getting used to the stock Android clock now.

Re the player: do you happen to know one that can distinguish between podcasts and music?

My old Nokias used to do this with almost 100% accuracy but the Android player - and the one on my old Desire - don't seem to support this distinction. You can work with genres and artist, but I can't see how to list all my music separately from all my podcasts.
 
I haven't ever played music enough on my phone to be sure (still using an iPod until I can be bothered to work around my old purchases with DRM) but I would have thought that either WinAmp or Poweramp both in Google Play would be a good start.
 
Bloody hell! I could be right......LG are apparently halting making anymore nexus 4 phones! If its true I'll eat my hat..........if I ever own one! ;)
