4GB Xbox 360 slim hard drive upgrade, Tips???

I seen a few uboob videeo's but want to hear from someone more real on how easy or hard it was???

GF son 360 only has 4GB of space, and he needs more
 
You have to get one designed for the slim, the others won't fit. Under the slim (if it sits upright) there should be a small door hidden in the vent that pops off, inside is a slot for the HDD.

just a bit confusing, is all, was hoping I didn't have to crack it open or anything. He thought it would just plug in where the USB ports are but I know thats wrong.

he did just ask for a 8GB upgrade, but I think we can do better, was gonna have the GF buy this

I believe this is the correct drive, but you might want to pull the old one and measure it if you're not 100% sure. The dimensions are on the Newegg page.

Edit: I believe this is the only other type of HDD for the Xbox, but someone more familiar with XBoxes needs to chime in. This is the kind my son has so...

That would be correct. The data migration kit is basically just a cable that serves as a xfer middleman from the old HDD's to the newer modeled 360's. It's as simple as it appears. However, you cannot transfer data from new 360 HDD to new 360 HDD unless you use USB flash drives.
 
I took a look and found a nice big hole for it under the vent cover, ahhh so simple ;)
 
since this one has an internal 4GB hard drive, do I need the transfer cable at all???

Cause the hole in the case is empty, like that 4GB will always be there.

This would not be true. I just transfered data (with the data cable) from year old Halo Reach console (slim) to the Halo 4 console (slim) with no problems.

FYI, both the the old phat xbox360 and the new slim xbox 360 have the data transfer software built into the OS. When you plug in the drive that you are transfering from, the xbox will detect it and ask if you want to do the transfer...

I was referring solely to the data xfer kit itself.
 
Still confused on why I need a cable???

The harddrive hole is empty, im not upgrading it, Im just putting one in it, so there should be no need to data transfer as what info it does have, is stored in memory, the thing has no hard drive.
 
If you're just going to buy a new hard drive from the store and stick it in, it literally just slides into place and you're done. The XBox will ask you which storage device you want when you start up a game but that will be the only thing different.

If you're looking for a cheaper alternative than a brand new hard drive from the store, try looking for an original "fat" hard drive on Craigslist. The hard drives are the same, the only difference is the casing. So if you remove the casing with a torx screw driver, the bare hard drive just slides in (there is a bit of wiggle room since it doesn't have a case, but just line it up and it plugs in). They even sell empty slim cases to make it look and fit exactly the same as well.

Either way you choose, it really is as simple as sliding the hard drive into the slot and you're done.
