Help free space showing wrong

silentwitness

Android Expert
i had a strange file in my DCIM folder called ".thumbdata3" did a quick google search and found out that its safe to delete the file. It was 3gb!!! Now after deleting the file stupid android is not recognizing that the file has been deleted and hence my free space is showing up wrong. I have tried restarting a few times also tried turning it off and pulling out the batter for about 20 seconds then turning it on no luck.

Are you sure that file was 3gb and not 3mb?
Was that file on the internal storage I assume and not the external sd card (if you have one)?

im sure it was 3gb and not 3mb as i was wondering how my phone had such less space free. Its on the internal memory. I do have a 64gb mmc.

edit:-

app 1.77 * 1024 = 1812.48mb
pic 15.78mb
Audio 197mb
download 66.26mb
Misc 4.29*1024 = 4392.96 mb

1812.48+15.78+197+66.26+4392.96 = 6484.48 mb + 3123.2(free space) = 9607.68

So that means 1912.32 mb missing.

yup if i am not mistaken? Earlier in the same screen it was showing me picture 3gb so i checked my gallery all pics are on mmc and not internal memory. So i checked the DCIM folder and then found that file which contained thumbnails which was 3gb.

Yes i am rooted have Not tried clearing cache clear only cache or dalvik cache also?
Yes, it wouldn't hurt...whenever I clear my dalvik cache, it says "no sd-ext found"...probably because I dont have my sd card partitioned?
Anyways, try it.
The other thing I noticed, and my question is, why is your total space only 11.25GB? My total space is 16GB. ??

lack of change in free space its showing the same amount of free space as it did earlier before i deleted the file. My big issue is i have tasker setup to take a nandroid backup of my phone automatically and it will store 2 images at a time so need some more space free for that.

Well, sorry I don't have a definitive answer for you:( but as far as nandroid backups, can you change tasker to save it to your external sd instead of internal? I mean, you said you have a 64GB ext. card yes?
I am not familiar with tasker, as I make my backups manually in recovery.

Suroot was nice enough to get my tasker to make the nandroid backup and has specifically said it should be in internal memory only. What i dont get is where the extra space has gone? Just for the heck of it i tried root explorer and when i go to mnt/sdcard on top it shows me used space 8.3gb used. So now either that's wrong which would mean my settings storage is giving right information(still missing 2gb odd) or its right and the settings screen has gone nuts. i do have a nandroid backup taken yesterday of my phone i could restore that and see and then try and delete the file. Is it worth trying that?

I would p.m. SuRoot...he's a pretty smart fella and I have learned alot from his posts. He may be better able to answer that and tell you what's going on.
I would be interested to find out also. If he does respond to you, let me know in this thread...I like to learn as I go:)

I think Android may not calculate temporary storage, that is cached items, as part of the free space. That or it won't show until you restart the Android OS by doing a soft reset. I've noticed it does this in general when I clear out cache that my app doesn't pick up. For instance, the thumbnail cache you found should be the gallery cache. Going to manage apps then gallery then clear cache will help only till the next time you open gallery and the phone reads all the images in a thumbnail size for viewing. I guess it makes the process quicker by saving those thumbnails.

ya will do that but i cant keep my nandroid on my external sd card as my phone starts acting up when i do it takes very long to read my memory card.

Mine was never anywhere near 16gb out the box mate....

Now why is that... Seriously
a6e6upyh.jpg

16 GB is not really 16 GB anyway. In reality it is 14.9 GB

Thats because Hardware manufacturers see 16 GB as 1000 MB, which is 1000 KB, which is 1000 B

When reality, 16 GB is 1024 MB, which is 1024 KB, which is 1024 B

So take your 16 GB and x1000x1000x1000, /1000/1000/1000 = 14.9 GB (which is usually how software would show your space.

Then when you take into account the nearly 2GB for /system 1GB for /cache and the various other little partitions, this leaves the GT-i9300 with 11.25 - 11.35 GB free.

Now, some US versions show the /system and /cache as part of that space. I'm not sure why. Probably to stop people calling carriers and asking "wheres my space?"

In regards to the OP, I would recommend making a nandroid backup, backup your sd card to pc and do a factory reset including wipe data of sd card.

Then restore the minimum data back and do a nandroid restore. It looks like a problem with the file system

What is "miscallanious"?
Is it safe to delete?
Mine used a LOT of space when i used to use cracked apps....

misc files are just folders that are there on the sd card its safe to delete the files but u need to see which files they are and make sure they dont belong to some app.

Ok i will give that a go thanks a lot. When you say restore minimum data back u mean install neatrom again and then restore my nandroid? But if i were to do that wouldnt it just overwrite my new install and give me the same data back with the same issue? As i am assuming a restore would restore everything including the file system?

edit:-

rebooted into recovery to make a nandroid backup and it says sd card free space 5947 Mb which sounds about right according to my calculations. So that means plilz touch is getting the correct reading of free space its just android thats getting it wrong.

ok that file of 3gb file is back again attached screenshot any ideas?
