I was also facing such kind of issue on my galaxy nexus unrooted 4.2.2
i notice that even after deleting my thumbnail folder(3gb+)
my free space remain the same as before .
i checked this on another nexus which is also having .thumbnail folder(500mb+) and in this also no space freed up after deleting the folder so i realize that it might be a fake space.
