text notifications

I have a strong love/hate relationships with T-mobile phones. So far I'm loving my G1 with one exception. Whenever I'm on a phone call, and someone sends me a text message, I don't hear a beep or anything to let me know I have a new notification. Does anyone know how to fix this? Every other phone I've had Nokia, Motorola, and even T-mobile's Shadow beeped if I was on a phone call and received a text.
