You can place it anywhere you like. Use es file explorer to navigate to the app and install it

If I don't have a USB cord around I email the programs .apk file to my phone and then just click on the attachment and it installs the game/app.

Anywhere on the device, as long as you know where is is and can navigate to it in a file explorer
