Root I believe I am lost..

So, I recently purchased my Evo V 4g etc. etc. Now I want to Root it and run a cool ROM like I've done previously on my phones. In short I'll try to summarize where I am in this process and where I'm stuck at.

Okay, so I did this -> http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte-all-things-root/572162-how-get-full-root-mac.html

And got to step 4. The rooting part I know this is for the 4g lte, so I stopped here.

I wanted Jellybean, but this one said I didn't have to be s-off and could use the 4ext ROM manager app. However, this didnt work. 4ext said I needed to be S-OFF for it too work?

My phone is currently UNLOCKED, S-ON, HBOOT 1.57. I've read quite a bit on here, so I apologize for starting a new thread with all the helpful guides, but I was still lost. I read that S-OFF is easier, but is it absolutely necessary? I'm also not 100% sure I have TWRP working, I ran it through terminal, and it seemed to work, but I'm not sure how to tell when I boot up into fastboot.

I think that's everything. All help is greatly appreciated, thanks :)
 
Mobster roms need the Smart Flash function enabled in 4EXT if u r S-ON. S-OFF is not difficult but like everything there is a degree of risk. S-OFF is not necessary however if u do not like sense and do wish to use some AOKP roms, u will need S-OFF to flash a different Hboot, in order to flash some roms. 4EXT and TWRP are two different recoveries, u can only have one at a time and u cannot flash Mobster with TWRP while S-ON, this is stated in Installation instruction of Mobster rom.
 
also i hope u have received the Radio update before u unlocked your bootloader and flashed the recovery. in the morning more pros will help :)
 
Okay that helps, I'll remove TWRP then as I paid for 4ext and it seems easier to use. I didn't get the radio update :( is this still possibly at this stage in the game? I also don't know how to get rid of TWRP lol but I'll work on that..
 
I'm not trying to be mean, but it appears you disregarded the full instructions . Most of these roms need S-OFF, the S-OFF tool Juopunutbear only works on Windows and Linux .

Plus you followed a guide for a different phone . This is very dangerous, unless you

A) Are ok with completely bricking your phone( the things only 150$ ATM, so this might be the case )

AND .

B) Have a very good idea of what your doing , how Android works , etc .

Here's what I would do , first getting access to a working Linux or Windows machine . If this isn't the case, then deal with not being able to run custom roms( for many getting root is enough ) .

It sounds like ur phone is still working . I recommend u to stop here , read a bit more and wait until more people to give ur opinions in the morning. Yes, but u'll need s-off to flash radio in hboot. To remove trwp u'll just need to install 4ext over it .
 
Yeah, I don't have access to windows. This phone is sooo much more difficult than the old MT lol I read that Unlocked S-ON was okay because you could still change boot.img etc. but its easier to do with S-OFF especially if you change ROMs frequently? However Hboot 1.57 is still an issue for most ROMs?
 
4ext won't install? It downloads, but says flashing failed. "Make sure your device is S-OFF" I thought the point of 4ext was that it could be used with S-ON?

You can install( or run off a live USB ) linux(ubuntu) on your mac, this is a bit more complex though .

If your boot loader is unlocked, download the 4Ext app, open it & click "Online install and upgrade", when it asks if your device is a evo 3d CDMA, click yes, then when it ask if your device is s-off click no.

Edit: Since you're new, you should only s-off if you really want a jellybean ROM. Other than that, stay rooted and s-on and learn about android; try to stay away from guides specifically for other phones, most information you will need at the moment can be found over here.

I don't know if the 4EXT control app will install the recovery if you're s-on, you might have to just push it with fastboot and then the control app and smart flash would be available. In the end though s-off is definitely recommended, it's very unusual to brick the phone, the worst thing that might happen is borking your sd card, a spare 2 gig card is advised until you have successfully s-offed. Good luck and if you need anything else just ask.

Yes it would install. All you need is to be rooted and have a unlocked boot loader.
 
You will need to use fastboot to flash the recovery.

I believe fastboot can only be run in windows and linux.

You can easily run a linux live distro by dloading a live image, then burn it to cd. Put the cd in and restart your mac. Hold down c as the mac is booting then choose boot from cd.

You could also dual boot with windows using boot camp.

Maybe my phone isn't rooted then? When I boot up into recovery or fastboot (volume down + power) it says unlocked at the top, but 4xt fails to flash everytime I try and install. I'll read up a little more and take another stab at it next weekend :P

Install a stock ROM with root or flash the superuser.zip, both you can do using twrp , then install 4ext.
