yeah AMOLED is interesting and in my opinion has several downfalls.
1) Sometimes the black are too black. Now some of you may be calling me crazy but I've played around on a Nexus one and watched a youtube video on it and anything that was supposed to be gray went strictly to dark black.
2) SUN SUN SUN. You can't see it! Unless you live in a cave or chat on this forum all day in your basement, the phone's real life practicality decreases especially if you ever find yourself having to make a call outside. Because you know that "neever" happens...
3) Touch screen is "ok". What you see with AMOLED phones is that the touch screen senstivity or whatever you have it is off. Like we see on the Nexus one with multi touch it doesn't always know where your fingers are. It can just pick up the pinching action. Now some people may say its a software thing or this or that but this is being seen more and more on AMOLED phones. It's mostly do part to what Ben was explaining earlier. They take the screen layer and combine it with the touch sensitive layer. By doing this clearly something is off because we don't see this "lost finger effect" on any LCD device.
4) New tech. With all new and developing tech there are always problems in the early stages. We see this now especially with the ATT and Tmobile versions of the N1, and the absolute different colors of the screen. One is a light purple and one is extremely dark. Everything has a purple hue to it! This happens because when they make a "batch" of the "electronic bacteria" which makes the AMOLED change colors or different shades of light, that some other bacteria was present or got mixed in.
I think AMOLED will be one of those techs to get passed over quickly in the cell phone world. With Samsungs super AMOLED and other alike tech available, it just doesn;t make sense to stick with it.
Hope this helped.
