Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

Oh I am serious. I not that crafty though. This was to get an idea of size compared to other objects around the house and my Hero. I did go to a Tmo store and try their dummy HD2 and my model was pretty close (the HD2 was sold out, at the store). No rounded edges of course.

Sorry for the poor quality of the image.
I thought I had it bad...

I'll be happy if we don't get AMOLED. Someone a long time ago in this thread explained how that technology isn't what it's cracked up to be. Maybe that person will come forward again, or maybe I'll find the post I'm talking about.

Here's the article on the limitations of the current implementation of AMOLED on smartphones (such as the Nexus One).

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news...nexus-ones-screen-science-color-and-hacks.ars

Other people have already mentioned the issue of outdoor visibility, but there's also an issue of text legibility because of the way that individual subpixels are shaped and organized. Black and white (especially text) gets rendered more poorly than on a traditional TFT LCD, though color images really shine on AMOLED screens.

:)

Hey Ben!!! Long time no see bud!

Yeah like i said the original one i saw was LCD and white with android 1.5. So some things have changed and others haven't haha

The incredible will be AMOLED screen though, don't know if its HTC built or what but it is AMOLED

Seriously, this thread is so much more welcoming and constructive. I'm really thankful for the moderators and the congenial atmosphere.

I know I have it bad when my wife wants this phone to drop because she is tired of me yelling at Dan on the tv ads to " GIVE ME MY PHONE ALREADY!!"
hehehe
I did have a dream last night that I was showing off the EVO to some classmates. I was so mad when I woke up.

Bill, that is some interesting stuff, and it makes me bring up the point again that the all possibilities are open. It more than likely still will be LCD, that's what Dan was told and what i believe will happen. It will not be AMOLED. Maybe HTC is making their own version of Super AMOLED? I'm speculating here but why not? Its not like samsung is the only provider of Plasma TV's and Panasonic the only LCD provider. Perhaps thats why they are switching coorps?

My bet is on LCD from what I've been told, although i did hear that the viewing angle was pretty sweet so ill try and do some diggin

and to that link dylan put up earlier, it still only says "a 4.3 inch screen" not the type... i find that suspect and reason to change my opionion and ASSUME something else. Im gonna work hard to crack this one tonite. Ill post something later hopefully

Could you get in trouble for letting out EVO information? Just asking seeing that you are like the only insider I know of.

yeah AMOLED is interesting and in my opinion has several downfalls.

1) Sometimes the black are too black. Now some of you may be calling me crazy but I've played around on a Nexus one and watched a youtube video on it and anything that was supposed to be gray went strictly to dark black.

2) SUN SUN SUN. You can't see it! Unless you live in a cave or chat on this forum all day in your basement, the phone's real life practicality decreases especially if you ever find yourself having to make a call outside. Because you know that "neever" happens...

3) Touch screen is "ok". What you see with AMOLED phones is that the touch screen senstivity or whatever you have it is off. Like we see on the Nexus one with multi touch it doesn't always know where your fingers are. It can just pick up the pinching action. Now some people may say its a software thing or this or that but this is being seen more and more on AMOLED phones. It's mostly do part to what Ben was explaining earlier. They take the screen layer and combine it with the touch sensitive layer. By doing this clearly something is off because we don't see this "lost finger effect" on any LCD device.

4) New tech. With all new and developing tech there are always problems in the early stages. We see this now especially with the ATT and Tmobile versions of the N1, and the absolute different colors of the screen. One is a light purple and one is extremely dark. Everything has a purple hue to it! This happens because when they make a "batch" of the "electronic bacteria" which makes the AMOLED change colors or different shades of light, that some other bacteria was present or got mixed in.

I think AMOLED will be one of those techs to get passed over quickly in the cell phone world. With Samsungs super AMOLED and other alike tech available, it just doesn;t make sense to stick with it.

Hope this helped.

ha and no i could not, atleast i dont think haha my source is chill and even wants me to inform you guys. He's been a sprint customer from the beginning and knows how it feels to be on the outside. hahaha i love you guys

Thanks, that makes me feel better about the absence of AMOLED on this phone. For some reason I thought Droid had an AMOLED screen, but after playing around with my friend's, the screen is very vibrant and colorful for an LCD screen, so it's really not as bad as people may think.

Not to mention that it is very easily visible on sunlight, plus as you mentioned, I've also seen videos of problems on the touchscreens of Nexus One phones, it may have to do with the way it combines both layers of the screen together.

Combined with the news of a supposedly new, better touch-screen manufacturer making the screen for the EVO, I think we really have nothing to worry about.

Super AMOLED would be nice, but it's impossible since Samsung developed it in-house and has no current plans to share the tech with other manufacturers, though I'm sure that is something that will change sooner rather than later.

At any rate, maybe the EVO 2 will have Super AMOLED or something comparable =P.

Sprint wouldn't let me upgrade early as I mentioned.

@SprintTerp: Do you have comments to make on this subject? If you don't want to answer, that's okay.

Thanks

It's been answered, but the 18th of the month prior to your eligibility is the most that is allowed by protocol. Sprint is also not easily coerced into early upgrades, even when you give them the ole 'I'm going to Verizon...' spiel. Might work if you get on the phone with the Retention and stay extremely persistent, but it's rare.

Thanks Ben, that was the article I was looking for. You seem to know quite a bit about screen technology. We also have a guy that knows quite a bit about WiMAX and LTE. It's nice to have people that know what they're talking about sharing their knowledge with us.

i online chatted on several occasions with sprint, asking for an early upgrade to be able to get a pre at launch. after many unsuccessful results (and one "false positive") i got a sprint expert to agree to a month and a half early upgrade (in the form of a several hundred dollar credit to my account after paying full price for the phone). the kicker of it all was they never reset my upgrade period. i'm eligible for an upgrade right now, so i'll be all set when the evo comes out.

I have mentioned somewhere on these forums about my experience and my reason for my loyalty to sprint.

Sprint local store was unwilling to help. I called in to the service line, spoke very nicely to them. One lady told me if I would keep the same attitude and call back and ask to retention, she was confident that I would get what I wanted.

I wanted to use my wifes upgrade on my line right away, and get the hero. Sign up for the everything plan, and get my wife a phone for a discount or free. Told them I had been with them many years, and really like the iphone but hated att. I wanted to stay with sprint but it just didnt make sense for them to not let me do what i wanted.

Retention said they couldnt do that, but had ways they could make the cost the same. in the end, I got my hero, with her full upgrade, and at least 7 month before i was eligible. Got her a blackberry which is plenty phone for her, and all were happy.

And like was mentioned with someone else, I still have my original upgrade date that just came open so I can get a new phone anytime now and again in october or november when my premier status lets me upgrade again from the hero. Pretty good deal

Just be nice when you call and they take care of you.

Don't think I like the "strange" pixel counting method of the amoled screen. Sounds like a not-so-honest way of achieving the numbers you want. Good read!!!

LLS I didn't go as far as to make a model yet, but I have been looking around the house looking for things of similar size. Maybe I'll just go look at the HD2 like everyone else.

The only problem is that it's flimsy. The real test would be to fit in the pocket of some pants. Anyone try an HD2 in their front pants pocket?

I don't think HTC can make their own. THere are only a few display makers and they OEM to the others. Samsung, Sony, Sharp, etc. Takes a ton of cash to make a facility to make the screens. (I believe). I am highly confident we will see a standard LCD display.

Edit: oops, Ben beat me to this.

So like many people I wanted to see just how this 4.3 would handle being carried in a front pocket.

While the HD2 is not exactly the same dimensions as the Evo, it is close. I checked out the HD2 and it is surprisingly easy to pocket. I don't think anyone will have a problem with is.

I'm just going to get a Blackberry type leather pouch to use and I think I should be fine.

p.s. Very light too, not sure if the Evo is going to be heavier than the HD2 but I was surprised with how light it is.

This phone = win.
