Root HTC one V HELP!!

So I got my first Android about a month ago and I believe the One V runs Ice cream Sandwich. it's nice but I really wanted JellyBean so I got the AOKP rom after rooting my phone I'm running TWRP and I followed the instructions to the letter. I also made a backup before wiping my ROM. I got stuck in a boot loop several times after I entered. Fastboot flash boot boot.img. So i gave up on AOKP and cleared everything and then tried to restore but I'm still stuck in the boot loop. I really need some help! This is my first time rooting and everything I'm a big time noob... I really don't care about Jellybean anymore, I just want to have my phone boot up to factory settings.

Try pulling the boot.img from your nandroid backup, and flashing that through fastboot. I'm guessing the reason you couldn't get that rom to boot was maybe an incompatible hboot version. But since you flashed the boot.img from the rom, you will need to flash the boot.img from what you were originally running (which is stock I assume) and it will probably boot up.

Is your phone still s-on?

Yes is is s on... truth he told I really don't know what that means. Thank you for your reply.. is there any step by step instructions on how to do this? I'm just scared... money is tight and my parents wont get me a new phone..

Well, in the first post, you said you flashed boot.img right? I assume you took the boot.img out of the aokp rom you were trying to flash?
You said you flashed it in fastboot with fastboot command fastboot flash boot boot.img

Well if you have a card reader, you should be able to look at where your backup is stored on the sd card. The backup you made through recovery (nandroid backup). Inside of that backup will be the boot.img for that backup.

The boot.img also contains a kernel. Because your phone is s-on, you are having trouble flashing a kernel with the rom. That is why you had to flash the boot.img seperately.

Since you already flashed the boot.img, you flashed a different kernel. Now you tried restoring your backup (which is good) but you already flashed a different kernel.

So you need to open the folder that contains your backup and copy the boot.img into the folder on your pc that contains fastboot and adb. And use the command again fastboot flash boot boot.img to flash the kernel that goes with your backup. You already restored the backup but it needs a compatible kernel to boot up.

Does that make sense? Let me know if you need more info.

Unfortunately, I looked inside the recovery (I named it "stockroot") and the only files present are; boot.emmc.win, boot.emmc.win.md5, data.ext4.win, data.ext4.win.md5, system.ext4.win and system.ext4.md5. :/
I have no idea where the boot.img file is... I performed a back up through twrp. Like I said I named it stockroot. Any suggestions? I don't mean to irritate you, I'm sorry I just have no idea.

I fixed it.. I re-locked my bootloader and ran an RUU program and it re-installed the stock ROM. Thank you so much for telling me what the problem with my phone was. I wouldn't have been able to find a solution. Out of curiosity what caused this? I saw someone else do exactly as I did step by step and the custom rom loaded. Maybe in the future I'll try again.. I heard it may be because Hboot is 1.57 when I need something below 1.40.

I was just looking up the RUU for you :p I'm glad you got it.

Yes, I have the Evo 3d and it's the same thing. I'm not sure what the bootloader versions are for your device, but on the 3d, you need a lower hboot (which requires s-off) to flash non sense roms. Aokp doesn't use htc sense and likely requires a bootloader downgrade to be able to boot the rom.

So that's likely why it wouldn't boot even though you flashed the rom and kernel, your hboot was probably incompatible.

Then what happened was, you had flashed an incompatible kernel (boot.img) for your backup. You flashed the kernel that goes with the aokp rom so then your backup wouldn't boot. You'd have to flash the proper kernel that went with your backup.

I don't know if 4ext recovery is compatible with your device or not, but you might look into it. It uses a feature called "smart flash" that allows s-on users to flash the kernel with a rom from recovery. This means no more flashing the boot.img through fastboot.

Not every device is supported though, so you would want to look into that before flashing it to your phone.

Also, are you on the sprint cdma version? I wanted to pick through the RUU for the boot.img so that you can keep it stored on your pc for future need. For example after restoring your backup, if you would have been able to flash the boot.img that would have been it. A lot easier than running an RUU.

Especially since the RUU removes root and requires you to lock the bootloader.
If s-off is available for your device, I would recommend it.

Also if you can't get s-off or use 4ext you can boot your recovery in fastboot. You can boot your recovery into the phones memory which will allow you to flash the rom and kernel without having to flash boot.img seperately.

If you use command fastboot boot recovery.img (recovery.img being the exact name of your recovery) it will boot your recovery. You can then flash a rom normal without a seperate kernel flash.

O.o Gosh this is so much information it seems so complicated.. I really want to give a Jellybean ROM another go but I am afraid my father flipped a cow when he saw the red letters on my HTC.... Also, my Super SU is gone.. Does this mean I have to unlock the bootloader through the HTC Dev all over again?

You'll get it. It just takes lots of reading, asking questions and practice.

Yes unfortunately like I mentioned earlier, running the Ruu removes root. It's not the most practical way to get out of a bootloop. Much unnecessary effort.

You have to unlock again, should be able to just use the same unlock token and issue the unlock command. Then you'll have to flash a custom recovery again then flash twrp through recovery.

That took me forever being my first time but now I feel all of it will only take around 20-30 minutes... Thank you for being so helpful.. I'm 17 and I've never posted on a forum of any kind and I was nervous at first, but you replied quick and were very helpful.

So, if I get my Hboot downgraded, will that mean that the mod should install normally?

Yes. But you need s-off before downgrading hboot which is a whole other beast to tackle :)

Btw in my last post I meant flash recovery then flash superuser through recovery. I said twrp but meant superuser :p

Hey you know what? I'm pretty new myself. My Evo 3D is the first phone I've rooted. I guess about a 7 months ago. So that shows how far I've come :)

But yes being s-off you can do anything. You also have to be more careful because there are things you can do that can permanently brick your phone.

I'd start with a custom ics rom just to flash something and get the feel a little. Then decide if you want to go s-off and flash a non sense rom.

Are you on Sprint? I pulled the boot.img from the sprint ruu

I'm on cricket wireless but I believe that is on the sprint network... What do you mean by a non sense rom?

Any help with the terminology or.. Help with anything for that matter would be extremely useful.

HTC's user interface is called Sense. (HTC Sense).

It is thrown on top of the stock android operating system. This is why all android phone manufacturers are different, even though they are all android. They each run their own user interface on top of android.

AOSP = Android open source project. aosp roms just run android without any other stuff on top of it.

I just re rooted... took me about 5 minutes, this stuff sure is easy once you get it down :P

So what are some basic things I should do? honestly, other than app2sd and roms I don't even know what you can do once rooted.

Yeah it gets easier! It makes so much more sense after doing it. One of the big things is roms. They are all different. You can find some that just run stock Android with no htc sense thrown on top. It's a lot different and highly customizable.

Titanium Backup is another big thing. Backup your apps and all their data. Never lose app data again.

You can use any root only app you can find. Custom splash screen if s-off. There's so much

So I tried to get CM10 from goo manager (it said it was compatible) I got stuck on the boot animation.. I'm assuming it's because of the Hboot again. :/

Can you recommend any mods that are good for a beginner like me? I just wanna flash a rom without having to do S-off and downgrade my Hboot.

Maybe I'll try all that stuff in the future, after I take baby steps with this. I've found that the only way to brick your phone is by being an idiot and not knowing you're stuff. So I want to play it safe.

Have you done the OTA update? What version is the radio?

As far as I know (I have an HTC One V) there is no S-Off for our phone yet. As asked before what is Radio Version and Hboot is it? I had the same problem and ran RUU to revert it to Hboot: 1.53; Radio: 1.00.00.0521_2; I'm currently on 4.2.2 Jellybean :D
